Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor, Black

I bought two of the Dell u2412m monitors that Im using on a Mac Mini for software development. Since I look at a lot of code all day long, text clarity is very important to me. I also use the monitors for graphics design and editing, so color performance and contrast is important as well. I also work in an environment where I have a lot of outside light coming in (including a window behind my chair), so an anti-glare coating was critical for me. Based upon the reviews I read here, I was a little concerned about the anti-glare coating on the u2412m and how that would effect my ability to read text. At times my eyes have had a little bit of a problem focusing on the text, but my brain seems to be adjusting to them after a day or so. Its a little hard to describe, but its like my eyes initially focused on the anti-glare coating instead of the image behind the coating. When I have a problem focusing, if I blink my eyes, they seem to refocus. In any case, after a couple of days, the text appears to be easier to read and I seem to have less eyestrain after a long day of coding on these than I did with my old monitors (Acer AL2216W). The color performance and contrast of the u2412m is significantly better than my old monitors, these look very rich compared to the old screens. Out of the box I did notice that one of the monitors had a slightly warmer white color than the other. This appears to be due to how they are calibrated for the Standard setting at the factory. I found that if I switched the color settings on the monitors from Standard to Custom Color and set the R,G,B levels to 100 on both monitors, then the colors appeared to be nearly identical. I am running with the colors at 100, contrast at 75, and brightness at 20 which seems to be about perfect for me. I now have 3 monitors connected (two of the Dells, and one of the old monitors) and I can say that overall I am very pleased with the improvement. The new monitors draw less power too, about 18 watts each with my settings vs 31 watts each for the old monitors. So now I am thinking about buying a third u2412m... This may not be the perfect monitor for my needs, but at this price point it does seem like a good choice and Im happy with the purchase. The stands also have great adjustability and the extra usb ports are very nice with my Mac.

Ive been trying to find a new monitor for some time now. I tried 27 monitors but in every case there was a problem with them - color desaturation, glass chips, LED bleeding, dead pixels, stuck pixels, defective ports, etc. Maybe I have terrible luck but is it so much to ask that a monitor actually fully work out of the box? Apparently so - I gave up on 27 monitors and turned to 24 monitors. Even in that range I had a real issue finding one that I liked (including other Dells) - until I came across this monitor. This is how monitors should be: sharp, clear, colorful, responsive, and with no defects. I liked this monitor so much I ended up getting three of them (and none of them had any problems). The picture is excellent and the colors are perfect. I havent noticed any ghosting when gaming and the viewing angle is great. The ONLY thing bad I have to say about the monitor is its lack of connections. Oh sure, it has DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort but I would have liked to have seen a second DVI port and/or an HDMI port (I hook in a Windows box and a Mac Mini). A very minor complaint, though. PROS: *Great Picture/Color/Response. *Everything worked! No dead pixels, no stuck pixels, no damage, no marks, no LED bleeding, no desaturation, great lighting and color balance - this was true on all three monitors. *Good menu system. *Excellent adjustable stand. *1920x1200 resolution is nice, 16:10 makes a huge difference. CONS: *Connections - would have been nice to have a second DVI port or an HDMI port; minor complaint though. This is easily one of the best monitors Ive ever seen, now if only there was a 27 version. I highly recommend it.

This is the 3rd U2412M Ive ordered. The previous two were ordered 11 and 13 months ago, and were REV A03. This is a REV A01 (model U2412Mb). It does have the yellow tint that others have talked about, and is very noticeable compared to the two previous A03 monitors. However I was able to adjust it so the difference is less noticeable by changing the preset to color temp and selecting 7500k (as opposed to standard and 6500k) - its still noticeable, but now mostly for blues instead of whites. Since Im not doing graphic design this is acceptable for me. I will be keeping this model, even with the yellow tint, but have to return this specific one as it has a loose part inside that rattles whenever I move it. I would have rated this monitor a 5 previously, but its dropped a star because of the color uniformity issues and the loose part inside (there is no damage to the monitor or the box, and it works). Update: Amazon shipped me a replacement, and this monitor works great. It is also a REV A01 (model U2412Mb). It does have a yellow hue compared to the REV A03 monitors, but this monitor isnt nearly as bad as the previous one, which stuck out very obviously when the monitors were next to each other. This one is much less obvious, enough that I may not even bother to adjust it. This monitor Ill be keeping.

So Ill get the big points out of the way first. No, its not a 10 bit panel, and yes, its an e-IPS panel (the low-end of IPS). If you dont know what either of those things mean, dont worry about it. This is far and away a better monitor than any TN panel out there (even the best TN panel wont match a low-end IPS panel for color reproduction, and its likely what youll get with any monitor under $200). So with that out of the way, Ill review this monitor as someone looking for a better than average LCD panel. That is, after all, what Dells U2412M is designed to be. Its not aimed at professionals. Its aimed at consumers that arent happy with how their TN LCD cant quite ever do white justice. Its aimed at the casual or enthusiast photographer that wants decent colors but doesnt have a job riding on it. Its aimed at the gamer that is disappointed by how hard it is to make out a dark room in their favorite game. It wasnt that long ago that TN panels in this size and resolution were going for the same kind of money (the Acer P241w sitting next to this Dell was $300 new). The fact that you can now get an IPS panel for under or around $300 is incredible. Compared to my old Acer (which Ive never been able to get decently calibrated) the Dell is fantastic. Whites are so much whiter. Colors are richer. Details are sharper. The OSD is quite frankly brilliant (the softkey system makes fumbling for the right button in the dark a thing of the past). Then add features I never had with my Acer, like the height and swivel adjustments, rotation, and a USB hub. Its money well spent as far as Im concerned, and Im very happy with it. Now to address an issue Ive seen in several reviews: yellow tinting. The display I got (model U2412Mb, rev A00) shows no signs of it. Thats only a sample size of one, so I cant claim that its gone, but its definitely not present on the one I got. I ran the Windows 7 monitor calibration (which is a visual calibration, calibrated eyeballs required), and was generally pretty pleased with the results. I dialed out a bit of green and just a hint of red (the gamma was pretty much spot on), and if anything it makes it look like my old Acer has the yellow tinting problem. For sake of mentioning the competition (I know how much some people like to comparison shop), you might check out ASUSs PA248Q. I havent seen one myself, but it seems to be the only real price to price direct competitor. The ASUS has USB 3.0 and HDMI if thats important to you. This Dell has neither (no HDMI at all, and the USB hub is 2.0). If youre like me and just cant stand how average TN paneled LCDs are these days, this Dell is a very good option. Im very happy with mine. It arrived with no issues (no weird tints, no dead/hot pixels of any kind). While I cant say for sure that your Dell will be just as good (quality control being what it is these days), I can say its worth it if you do get a good one. As always with Amazon, youre likely to have the best luck buying directly from Amazon (thats what I did).

Where I got this monitor: Amazon Is this my first U2412m: Yes Date of manufacture: June 2014 Revision code: A01 Yellow Tint: I guess? has a yellowish color compare to my primary screen (which is a 13 MacBook Pro non-retina version) I tried varying the color temperature and it is still yellower than my Apple screen. That said, its on an acceptable level. As a side: When I first bought this macbook, I actually experienced the same problem with the new laptop and my Apple monitor, and I got a replacement from Apple but they said it wasnt a fault, its a difference between what manufacturer produces the monitor (I think its LG VS Samsung). So I am happy with my whiter laptop and this monitor is great for me. UPDATE: I just figured the yellow tint was due to the software f.lux I have on my laptop that changes the color temperature according to the time in a day. After I quit the program, yellowish screen is gone. I guess all I can say about that is the Dell monitor displays more reaction to the color temperature than my Apple laptop. I saw a lot of reviews on Amazon discussing the revision and so on. I was extremely stressed out about that, and decided to give Amazon a try since I really needed another monitor that can be in a pivot position. When it got here, on the side of the Dell box, it stated the revision code and the manufacturer data, I guess I was happy with what I got. The stand that came with it is amazing, it can do all kinds of rotation angle and it makes my work station more ergonomic than other monitors (+ normal stand) could have. Just order it and voila, no need to get a separate stand, nor measuring the eye level and pile books underneath it. It just magically works. Seriously, I love it. I searched for some high resolution wallpaper that could fit with this 1200 X 1980, and it makes the monitor ever prettier. The only down side is: I wish they could implement some kind of software that you can adjust the brightness from the keyboard and some sort of shortcut to rotate my screen.

Update -- after using a new adapter to connect to my MacBook (VGA to DVI, I believe), the sleep problem seems to be solved! (I did not change the type of adapter, just swapped one adapter for a different one at work.) So the problem seems to have been in the adapter. I am updating from one star to 5 OLD REVIEW FOLLOWS... THE PROBLEM IS NOW SOLVED! I bought this monitor to work with my Macbook Pro, 13-inch, Late 2011 model, running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4. The monitor works great for a few minutes then goes into energy saver mode, goes black and will not wake up unless I use mirroring mode, which I dont want. I want two screens showing different things on each. Dell recommends upgrading the software on my laptop video card which is so far impossible because Intel only seems to offer windows versions of the software for the video card. So, to summarize, the monitor is really awesome when it works, which is hardly ever. Oddly, it worked well for several weeks, so Im not sure its possible to return to Amazon. I have tried many different ways to solve the problem, including turning off the feature on my computer that puts the display to sleep, playing with all the features on the monitor itself, plugging and unplugging everything in various orders, rebooting the laptop over and over, etc, etc... nothing solves the problem. I hope this information helps Macbook Pro users avoid the problems Im having with this monitor.... very, very annoying when you are busy at work!! Meanwhile my cheap old, small Viewsonic monitor worked beautifully with the same laptop, but the image was terrible.

Initially, I was in a confusion which commodities to buy. There were several options for me as an owner of a laptop looking to upgrade for a something better: a large screen dell xps 27 inch all in one. It had several pros for me: Large screen with resolution of (2560 X 1440), powerful speaker, integrated webcam and several of higher end features. Cons were: higher price and pain of owning two computer system. Rather than price, I was more bothered with second cons as I needed a single computer in home as well as in school with all required softwares for my academic work which I might need to access anytime. So, I was inclined towards buying an external monitor to use in my laptop by which I can utilize portability of a laptop while I am at college and feel of desktop while I am at home. There were several types of monitors to choose from. 27 inch, 24 inch and 23 inch and several name brands. I chose 24 inch size as I felt like it is an ideal size to use as a desktop monitor. I had seen the review of this dell ultrasharp u2412M monitor with all glowing review so did not hesitate to buy it. Now I bought it, started using it and I am very happy with my decision. The overall quality of this monitor is quite good. The picture is very sharp, bright and crisp and it is perfectly right size as a monitor. Furthermore, It rotates around full extent as well as easily adjustable up and down position.....so many features!!! Higly recommended!!!

The Dell Ultrasharp series are my favorite monitors. I currently own 4 Dell UltraSharps. Most / all are typically IPS based (in plane switching) and offer the best viewing angles and clarity. The U2412M is currently my primary monitor. I own one that I purchased about 3 years ago directly from Dell. I decided to replace my secondary monitor (which is a Dell U2311H) with another U2412M which I purchased from Amazon. Out of the box the monitor looked great. The antiglare coating on this latest revision is not as aggressive as the older version I currently own. Colors and text look more vibrant and clearer. The one problem I had (which is mentioned quite often in the reviews here) is a slight yellow cast on the whites. I purchased a hardware calibration tool (ColorMunki Display) specifically to calibrate the new monitor. Even after calibration, I could not get rid of the yellow cast. Unfortunately that meant sending it back. I wished it didnt have that problem since I really like the new revision (mainly due to the lighter antiglare coating). I will be on the lookout for a good price on the newer U2415 model.

Coming from TN panels, I was really impressed with this monitor. Considering that its a eips instead of the other. I used to game on 3 TN panels on eyefinity portrait and I thought that was amazing. I decided to upgrade because the horrible viewing angle. So, I bought 3 of these bad boys for eyefinity portrait. At first I was a bit skeptical about it being an IPS panel that stuck with 60hz refresh rate and 8ms would be bad for fps. Thats not the case. Powered by two 6970s with the combined resolution of 3600x1920(no bezel correction) I was blowned away by the crisp quality of the color when playing BF3 and Starcraft 2. However I did notice that its a bit slower than my old TNs when it come to ghosting, but thats a good trade off for better colors. I though the colors are good right off the box but I was wrong, after calibration(I downloaded the ICC from TFT Central and make sure the color temp are around 6500k which can be change in monitor factory menu) I notice that they looks a lot better than before. Pros: 1)1920x1200 (extra pixels are always welcome in my book) 2)Color reproduction for a e-IPS 3)Awesome viewing angle especially in portrait 4)Good for gaming also 5)USB ports are very handy 6)Very good stand and good construction Cons: 1)Anti-glare coating are very aggressive in this monitor. When I did my dead pixels test and I notice that the monitors seems dirty so I took a piece of cloth and wipe them down. However its the AG coating that make the monitors appear to be dusty or grainy. To me its kinda annoying, some might not find it annoying at all. I love white background so the AG coating are a bit distracting. 2)Backlight bleed are a bit strong in this monitor. Being an LED, I understand that you cant avoid it. Out of the 3, one seem to be worse that the other 2. 3)Thick bezels are one thing that eyefinity/surround gamer tend to stay away from. I agree that the bezel are a bit thick in these but you cant avoid it. After playing for more than a month, youll get use to it. You can also debezel them but that will void your warranty...unless youre good.... 4)No HDMI. Bummer but I learnt to live without it. Overall, I love my U2412m. Its a completely different experience when playing on portrait. You can feel more immersible and with good viewing angle you cant go wrong with these. One thing to note is to good look at it locally before you pull the trigger.

I purchased two of these. One of them had a stuck pixel cluster and a pea sized bright spot near the center of the screen. I returned that one and the replacement arrived with two dark pixel clusters. On any background but a black background the dark pixel clusters look like the monitor is dirty or has a smudge....tried to clean the screen multiple times but the dark spots are still there. Evidently Dell doesnt consider it an issue unless you have 6 or more of these spots but an ultrasharp monitor should be better than this. I can understand one bad monitor but now the replacement has issues too. Very annoying. The 2nd of the first two I purchased doesnt have any issues. Other than the pixel cluster issue the colors are great and the monitors perform as expected. UPDATE: After more research the dark spots on the replacement monitor are actually smudges/fingerprints/dust etc. between the layers of the monitor. That is why it looks like a smudge but you cant clean it. It is behind the top layer. This has to be a quality control issue during assembly. Pros: Great color and excellent picture Cons: Quality control issues/stuck pixels/smudges between layers My Settings: I have used both the standard and color temp control. My favorite settings are the color temp mode set to 5700K, brightness at 35 and contrast at 75. I have also used the same brightness and contrast with the standard preset mode and like that too. The brightness comes set at 75 which is way too high in my opinion. Great color reproduction and no eye strain with these settings. I did find the 6500K color temp setting too red for some colors and that is why I settled on the 5700K.
