Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor, Black

I purchased two of these. One of them had a stuck pixel cluster and a pea sized bright spot near the center of the screen. I returned that one and the replacement arrived with two dark pixel clusters. On any background but a black background the dark pixel clusters look like the monitor is dirty or has a smudge....tried to clean the screen multiple times but the dark spots are still there. Evidently Dell doesnt consider it an issue unless you have 6 or more of these spots but an ultrasharp monitor should be better than this. I can understand one bad monitor but now the replacement has issues too. Very annoying. The 2nd of the first two I purchased doesnt have any issues. Other than the pixel cluster issue the colors are great and the monitors perform as expected. UPDATE: After more research the dark spots on the replacement monitor are actually smudges/fingerprints/dust etc. between the layers of the monitor. That is why it looks like a smudge but you cant clean it. It is behind the top layer. This has to be a quality control issue during assembly. Pros: Great color and excellent picture Cons: Quality control issues/stuck pixels/smudges between layers My Settings: I have used both the standard and color temp control. My favorite settings are the color temp mode set to 5700K, brightness at 35 and contrast at 75. I have also used the same brightness and contrast with the standard preset mode and like that too. The brightness comes set at 75 which is way too high in my opinion. Great color reproduction and no eye strain with these settings. I did find the 6500K color temp setting too red for some colors and that is why I settled on the 5700K.

It is unfortunate for those of us who use a computer for business purposes (I program) that the industry has decided that 1080 lines is enough. It is not. Finding a 1920x1280 monitor is getting hard these days. I finally had to retire my 6 year old Acer 1920x1280 monitor as the back-light finally kicked the bucket. I was skeptical about buying a Dell as they do make some low-end monitors that are really poor. I was pleasantly surprised by this monitor. It is crisp and clear and the colors are fine (for my non-photographer eyes). I do find that the monitor is rather bright and with a digital interface the whole experience a bit harsh. However when you start with extra crispness it is easy to dial back the sharpness setting, adjust the blues down 3-4% using the custom color setting, re-adjust your clear-type on Windows and tweak the contrast/brightness to get a pretty pleasing look. For me all monitors seem to look like crap out of of the box and need to be messed with. I am very picky about clarity of text since that is what I look at day in and day out and this monitor delivers. The ability to raise and lower and tilt is just so much better than my previous monitor and makes a big difference. Look this monitor is big and you want to have it pointed at the optimum angle towards your eyes. In my case I use it as the main monitor and my laptop screen is my secondary monitor so being able to adjust it lower on my desk and then angling it up made using the two screens together a bit smoother. I have not found the anti-glare coating to be too bad though it definitely adds a touch of graininess to the look. Probably a reasonable trade-off. The shiny laptop screen sitting next to this monitor that clearly reflects the trees out the window behind me reminds me that this coating is really effective. There is just no reflection at all in this monitor which is good.

Previous to this I had run a pair of Dell 2005FPW / 2007FPW S-IPS monitors because I do amateur photography and some design work. Color shift and accuracy matters more than response for me, even though I do game sometimes. The Dell 2005 was dying, losing its sync until warm ....So I went off to find a new monitor. I really wanted a 24 this time vs a direct replacement for the 20.1. But I was worried that e-IPS was fine for most, but not someone who often returns monitors... ME. My 2007FPW works fine.. but after 5 years the CFL back-light is unable to reach the 120 luminance setting I use when calibrating.. besides that it is working well and I have been happy with Dell Monitors. Next year the other monitor will get replaced.. but not sure what size. So After reading all the great reviews and the few bad reviews.. I decided to go for it on the Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24 My concerns going in were: > LED Backlite being too blue > Coating being differing / worse than what I was used to > Viewing Angles being less than S-IPS I got it set up today.... WOW!! I love the larger screen area... The controls are easy to use and the labels on the screen that come up make adjusting it in the dark easy.. Even before I got it calibrated there were some things I noticed. The color was good and it didnt suffer from the intense blue tints some of the first LED backlit screens did which made me avoid them for years. I like the anti-reflective coating. If I put my face closer than 18 inches from the monitor I can see it, just like on my previous two monitors and then only on a white screen. I dont see it when working at my normal distance which my eyes are tuned for. (only distance I dont need glasses) I use a Pantone i1Display to calibrate my monitors.. It calibrated perfectly... and am thrilled I wish the old monitor was as bright... but both are now color-temp and contrast calibrated to almost match. As you see I gave it 5 Stars.. Here are the low points, (Note that on a $290 24inch IPS monitor these NITS are not worth more than a half star and I am rounding up. >E-IPS vs S-IPS Side to Side in landscape mode I see the same viewing angle. If I stand and look down, I see the new 24 dim faster than the older S-IPS so the top to bottom viewing angle is not quite as good. I probably wouldnt run ii in Portrait mode because of that. But I havent tried.. When I do I will update the review. >When Calibrating the monitor the contrast, brightness and RGB settings were a bit coarser than I would like. This means that while my eye couldnt see a shift in brightness or contrast.. the calibration sensor would jump from just below perfect to just above prefect on the sensed levels. But I got it where I wanted and the calibtation curve as good as any Monitor I have owned. Thats it so far. If you cant deal with the screen coating or sit the right distance from the screen and are used to clear screens.. I can see why some people might not like this.. But I have a Window and or a TV behind me in the office.. the Anti-reflective coating is a godsend.. I have NO reflections even from intense sources of light behind me. For Photographers and Designers looking for a good monitor on a budget, that can be calibrated this is a solid choice I have nor problem reccomending.(Though at this price is not able to display a full Adobe RGB Gamut.) Dell saved some money by dropping HDMI ( so did my HP notebook which also has display port) If neded the adapters are a couple bucks. A non-issue. But the image quality is top notch. And great for this use.

When I first turned this monitor on I was disappointed in its performance. The colors were rather dull. It needs to be adjusted correctly. I first used Liquid Color which made things better. Then I made manual adjustments based on my subjective preferences. These adjustments were made to Game Mode. Here are the settings I like: Brightness 76 Contrast 76 Hue 50 Saturation 70 Sharpness 50 Dynamic cont. On Using these, the display looks beautiful. I liked it so much, I bought another one of these monitors and I now have a dual monitor setup. For this I bought the Planar 997-5253-00 Dual Monitor Stand which works very well and is of high quality. I use dual displays on the Game setting mostly for Flight Simulator X, which looks great. (For routine everyday use I shut one of the monitors off and set the other to Standard.) So I suspect that some of the ho-hum reviews are based on sub-optimal adjustments. Admittedly, adjusting it is somewhat of a hassle, and my settings are subjective, but if one is willing to do some tweaking youll get a nice looking display. You also get 1920 x 1200 resolution which is becoming less common for some reason, but it is what I prefer.

Initially, I was in a confusion which commodities to buy. There were several options for me as an owner of a laptop looking to upgrade for a something better: a large screen dell xps 27 inch all in one. It had several pros for me: Large screen with resolution of (2560 X 1440), powerful speaker, integrated webcam and several of higher end features. Cons were: higher price and pain of owning two computer system. Rather than price, I was more bothered with second cons as I needed a single computer in home as well as in school with all required softwares for my academic work which I might need to access anytime. So, I was inclined towards buying an external monitor to use in my laptop by which I can utilize portability of a laptop while I am at college and feel of desktop while I am at home. There were several types of monitors to choose from. 27 inch, 24 inch and 23 inch and several name brands. I chose 24 inch size as I felt like it is an ideal size to use as a desktop monitor. I had seen the review of this dell ultrasharp u2412M monitor with all glowing review so did not hesitate to buy it. Now I bought it, started using it and I am very happy with my decision. The overall quality of this monitor is quite good. The picture is very sharp, bright and crisp and it is perfectly right size as a monitor. Furthermore, It rotates around full extent as well as easily adjustable up and down position.....so many features!!! Higly recommended!!!

Update on monitor 2-12-2014 Raised monitor from 1 to 4 stars! Miracle! The computer was repaired by HP - at first the repaired computer didnt SEE the monitor! (kept going into sleep mode) THEN I tried connecting it to DVI port (instead of DVI to HDMI) Still didnt work - then I just started hitting keys on my keyboard, turning mouse on and off - and.... voila! The monitor was live! (Dont know if the change of port had anything to do with it -- maybe banging the keyboard?) Worked splendidly for a few days - then I thought to reconnect my 2nd monitor (which I had disconnected from DVI) to the HDMI Well... the screen started to flutter when I started a PowerPoint slideshow. This is just what happened before the monitor slowed down to the point of uselessness. I immediately disconnected 2nd monitor -- dont understand this at all! The screen still flutters when I start slide-show -- but everything else is working beautifully. Keeping fingers crossed and praying. I really do love this monitor! previous 1-star review. ............................. It seemed to work all right for about a week. Then my computer, became erratic, slowed down, and became unusable. It was under warranty to HP - they put in a new hard drive. Now the monitor will not come on at all. It goes right into sleep mode. I have 2 other monitors that work as soon as I plug them in. Not this Dell. I am totally mystified. And so disappointed that it is too late to returrn..

Very nice quality monitor for the price. Color calibration appears straight on, great wide viewing angles typical of IPS panels, with no dead or stuck pixels whatsoever and absolutely no backlight bleed on the one I received. Refresh rate is low at 8ms, so Id expect some slight ghosting on fast FPS games - absolute hard core gamers probably need to look at another brand or model. Dells base is the best designed I have ever owned. The landscape to portrait pivot function of the base is very nice and allows you use the monitor vertically instead of horizontally - very useful when proofing documents. The only thing I dont like about it is that it is very easy to scratch the base when pivoting if you dont remember to tilt the bottom of the monitor outwards as you pivot it (a minor quibble, and more user error on my part than an actual design fault). Packaging from Amazon was great - Dells box (which itself was built like a tank and held the monitor screen securely within cardboard and not foam restraints) was packaged securely within a second Amazon box padded with paper. Cant ask for much more than that. All in all, a great monitor for the price.

I have always enjoyed my Dell flat-screens and felt they were a grade above the alternatives in build quality. As an IT professional I get hands on with many others and have not seen or used one that I preferred to my Dell. However, my Dell monitors have always been purchased by my employer, at significant expense. So when I needed a monitor due to taking a new job I went to work trying to find one that I would be happy with. When I came across this one I was very happy to see that there was an option to have another Dell that would meet my needs, that I could afford. I was very tempted to step up and buy the more expensive model to get the claimed color accuracy but am satisfied that I did not. After using this monitor for a month, I am very satisfied with it. The screen is definitely larger than the one I was using before, I thought it was a 24 as well but perhaps not. I am very happy that it is 1920x1200. It pairs perfectly with my Dell 2007FP which is 1600x1200. The 1680x1050 I was using before always annoyed me that it was larger but with lower resolution, I never understood that trend in the industry. This monitor is notably brighter and whiter than the Dell2007FP it sits next too. Out of the box I had to reduce the brightness, it was just too much. In summary I will say unless you are a professional in need of perfect color matching, I cannot see a reason that you would be disappointed with this monitor.

The quality of the monitor is excellent regarding functionality. It has the best controls that I have seen on monitors that I have used. The quality of the pictures is excellent (4 out of 5 stars), but the quality of the text is 3 out of 5 stars. I guess I got spoiled with the quality of retina displays on Apple products that is not available on PCs. My test consists of writing the word milling or optimum using Arial font. With anything at or below 7 pt. size, the i and the l become a blur. You could improve this by 50% spending $500 to $600 for a better monitor that also may require an upgrade on your video card depending on the capabilities of your current card. The only other negative that did not affect me much is the lack of HDMI port. For now I will keep the monitor and check the 4K resolution monitors once the prices come down since that move will require a video card upgrade. I bought the monitor from Amazon on August 10 2014 and the manufacturing date is June 2014, Revision A01. I have not seen any of the yellow tint mentioned by other reviewers. CORRECTION: I guess that is the problem with all the reviews. Many times what we report as a defective product is a result of our own mistakes. I connected the monitor to my laptop and the text resolution is much better. I have what is supposed to be a powerful video card on my desktop (Nvidia GTX 285) and the laptop is producing sharper text than the desktop. Tested with different cables and monitors and the result is the same. So My issue is with the video card. I increased the monitor rating from 3 to 4 stars. Is not 5 stars because I can see the granularity of the pixels. Something that could be better in more expensive monitors with pixel size of 0.23mm instead of the 0.27mm this monitor has. I am still keeping the monitor because of the price/performance ratio. I would recommend it if you want to stay under $275 for a 24 monitor. UPDATE 16 Sep 2014: Exactly a month and 10 days after purchasing the monitor the DVI-D input stopped working. I had one computer and two laptops each connected to one of the 3 inputs available in the monitor. The VGA and DisplayPort inputs continue working but the DVI-D does not work any more. Because it is over a month I cannot exchange it with Amazon. Called DELL customer support and they will replace it with a refurbished unit. My customer satisfaction is going down hill. I will not buy another monitor from Amazon unless I add an extended warranty which typically is not recommended to get anyway. I will think twice if I ever plan to purchase a large screen TV from Amazon since I will be running the same risk.
