Fiebings Tan-Kote (4oz) - Resin Based, Easy-to-Use Top Finish Creates a Mellow Gloss and Rich Shine

I have been doing custom leather work for 15 years and recently tried Tan-Kote as an alternative to Tandy Satin Sheen. Tan-Kote is easy to apply, dries to a nice satin finish, and leaves a flexible protective layer to the leather. It does darken light colored leathers, so if you intend to use this, it would be wise to test it on a sample piece before you put it on the leather item you want to cover. It does not appear that the coating is waterproof, at least it wasnt after two light coatings on veg-tanned leather. It also appears that this coating is water-based, which makes cleanup much easier. My initial description is that Tan-Kote is a better finish than Tandy Satin Sheen and less of a hassle than the lacquer finishes.

Like all Fiebings products I have used, this Tan-Kote works great.

Excellent product I am only a hobbyist leatherworker, but from my research into what some of the professional leatherworkers whose work I admire are using, and having used the product myself, Tan Kote is now my top coat of choice. This product is easy to work with, its resists moisture and when dry, it gives my projects a nice mellow finish. Additionally, it allows you to clean and oil the leather when needed. It’s a bit pricey, in my opinion, but just about everything associated with leatherworking is. Although, it would be an added benefit if Fiebings could see their way clear in easing up on the price point.

Good resist and topcoat for leather.

Not waterproof. Otherwise it does make a glossy finish. Do NOT shake this right before use. Shaking makes hundreds of air bubbles that will end up on your work. If you think it has separated, which I havent seen, use a popsicle stick or chopstick.
