The inReach Explorer works okay. Decent SOS system with a small screen for emergency use really. I wasn’t happy enough to keep it. I also deducted a star for subscription cancellation difficulty. After returning the device and canceling service I was billed another month. Happened twice. Check your account if you cancel as the service will magically begin billing you.

I really have liked the ability to text with people on the trail or in The back country with out a huge charge. The interface is simple easy to use and very nice that it works well with a phone.

Bought this for the SOS function because I hike alone from time to time. Tested it in the White Mountains with absolutely no cell service and it worked perfectly. The app that Bluetooths to your phone makes it really easy to send a message or zoom on a map. Its a great feeling knowing Ill be able to get help if I take a spill or get stuck with weather.

The service is faulty or the data was deliberately choked. In reach choked the data and instead of transmitting my location every 2 minutes it went to every 4 hours. You put my life at risk.

I spent over $400 for this thing plus set up fee, insurance, and monthly fees. It did send a message once but not today. Dont trust it

This is a very accurate GPS with satellite communication ability. It allows others to track your location, and to send messages (canned or otherwise) to people you designate. As with all things Garmin, it works well but the interface is clunky (and that includes the web interface). The Bluetooth connection to your phone (no cell signal required) is nice, as it allows you to use your phone to interact with the GPS device rather than the clunky interface. I’ve used this myself, my daughter has used it in Yellowstone’s back country, and I will use it this winter again in Yellowstone’s backcountry. Works well, with some interface limitations. Note: to use the messaging services a satellite contract is required, and there are multiple flexible options available at a reasonable cost.
