> 3 dayThis is Mr Stanleys accurate account of his travails in Africa, and it is never what you think. The bugs, the people, the muck, not the animals. Also an insight into the medical ignorance of the day. Learn the real value of cloth in Dotis. Yes folks, money in Africa was carried in bales....cloth. Dr Livingston really really could have used google earth and penicillin, but alas....

> 3 dayThis book was written by and about one of the worlds greatest explorers and his adventures in Africa. If you are interested in similar travels through Africa, then I suggest Elephant Hunting in East Equatorial Africa by Arthur Neuman or Bell of Africa by W.D.M. Bell. How I found Livingstone is okay but it pales in comparison to those other two books. (Just like every other book of non-fiction.)

09-06-2025I really liked this book but I gave 4 stars because he often seem to ramble into other stories. It was not hard to follow but I thought is had to many hmmmmmm asides I guess. But the look into Africa and the their way of life and especially the way they were thought of at the time and most especially the way they treated. I know that today it is still often thought that way and about our African-Americans here in the USA. It was hard to read because of the frankness in the truth. I do whole heartedly recommend this book to everyone. It should be required reading.

> 3 dayI found this book very interesting. I was struck by the amazing tenacity and bravery that was shown by the party sent to find Dr Livingstone. The sheer will power of Sir Henry Stanley that made him push ahead despite he and his party facing extreme conditions and so many setbacks. Illness, attacks, thievery and nearly impassable terrain, plus food and water shortages among others, he still managed to achieved what he had set out to do. The story continues as Sir Henry Stanley greatly encouraged by his profound admiration of Dr David Livingstone whom he got to know so well, was able to play a significant role with Dr. Livingstone in further exploration.. The subsequent account of their travels and the difficulties they faced together shows the reader another side of both men and makes this book even more special.

10-06-2025A very interesting time and place for an adventure. Insightful into the history and relationships and culture of those times. It was quite dangerous and extremely hard work to go where they went. Worth the read.

> 3 dayI purchased this book in he hopes of learning about these two interesting characters but was left empty handed, so to speak, due to the period writing style. I guess Im not cultured enough to appreciate the style. I hope to find another book about the two that will quench my curiosity in a more readable manner.

05-06-2025Given the era in which it was written, the language is a bit overblown but not intolerably so. However, the formatting is a continual challenge. The tale is interesting but be prepared to adjust the font size every couple of chapters.
