A very poor excuse for an ereader cover. 1) It covers the off/on switch so that it is necessary to push the reader out of the cover to turn it on (or off) 2) It holds the reader in such a way that pushing the reader out to access the off/on switch may well cause it to literally shoot out of the cover 3) There is no means to hold it shut - so that it flops open, most likely when you drop the reader 4) The magnetic origami folds do not provide a good or customizable stand 5) It costs $50

The PowerCover works best if you put a piece of tape over the contacts so it just functions as a cover. Im writing this review to help others who may have one that has been broken by the recent updates. Put some tape on the contacts to turn it into a dumb cover and youll at least have something useable. Ive had the PowerCover just over a year. Ive had 3 Kobo reader: one of the original ones from Borders, a 32GB Aura One limited edition, and most recently a Sage. I picked up this PowerCover for the Sage after checking out some of the other covers; I wanted a place to put the stylus and thought the batter power would be nice. The cover works from a design stand point, but when connected to the Sage through the contacts, breaks the Sage functionality. I would not have paid the extra for it if Id known this. At first it worked pretty well, then at some point an update basically broke it. Problems: 1) When the Sage is out of the cover, I get about a weeks worth of usage between charging (fairly aggressive power saving settings). When I leave the Sage in the PowerCover, its dead in 2 days. 2) If I let the Sage turn off automatically, I cant restart it while in the PowerCover. This is a small issue, but a hassle. I should be able to open the cover without removing the reader to start it from an auto power down. 3) I recently tried the Kobo plus service. If I download a Kobo Plus book and open it in the Sage while its in the PowerCover, the Sage locks up and reboots, sending me back to the Home page. I basically cant read Kobo Plus material. If I take the Sage out of the PowerCover, I can read the Kobo Plus material without a problem. The fact that the software is sooooooo poorly designed that the charging function can render the device useless just floors me. Ive been doing software and firmware design and production for over 20 years now. From my perspective the software group that did this should be fired. How can you take a product, add an interface for smart charging, have that interface render the device unusable, and then release it? And who approved a design that requires you to remove the device from the cover to perform a normal, daily function (powering it on)? You can fix this by putting tape on the contacts so the PowerCover works like a normal cover. The physical design of the cover is perfect with the slot for the stylus, but the software completely ruins the product. The fact that these issues have been ongoing for months shows that the executives leading the execution dont care. All of the concerns listed above are fixable in software, but they are still selling a broken product with no fix. That is really inexcusable. I started using Kobo through Borders in 2010 because the manga content was better. Ive now got so much content that I really dont want to change, but it this is the direction the company is headed in, the is a going down the drain implication. Note that my original Kobo worked flawlessly for years, and my Aura One was super. In fact, Im glad I kept the Aura One, as it currently works better than the Sage for most things.

Picked this up during the Kobo Fathers Day sale along with a Sage. This provides a very solid-feeling cover at the expense of weight--the Sage plus PowerCover is about a pound or so. I dont mind it but many people would. The ergonomics are so-so; the spot where I would naturally grip it with my left hand is right where the stylus holder is. When reading, the front cover swings around and attaches to the back magnetically, with a strong pull--the back cover wont go flopping around, thats for sure. When the cover is on, the Sages power button is covered, so if you leave your reader sit uncovered and it goes into standby mode, you either have to remove the Sage from the cover to press the button, or flip the cover closed and open it again. Despite the battery having the same 1200 mAh rating as the Sage itself, the cover battery drains at approximately twice the rate of the Sages built in battery, I assume to losses in magnetic induction. The behavior of the Sage + PowerCover in my experience is to fully exhaust the covers battery first, keeping the Sage topped up at 99-100% the entire time. There is no way to charge the cover on its own, it must be connected to the Sage to charge (someone out there has probably figured a magnetic doodad to do it, but eh.) All in all its a solid well-built case but should either have a larger battery of its own or be priced around half of what it is now. I dont regret it but I dont think I would buy another one.

I bought the Kobo Powercover for my Kobo Sage from Amazon. The case did not always charge the Kobo Sage, often having to be reseated for the Kobo Sage to draw power from it (you can tell when its charging by tapping the battery icon. If you cant even see the case, which was often true for me, then its not charging). It also would frequently make a loud high pitched noise. I contacted Kobo support and they told me to contact Amazon to get a replacement. I did, the replacement arrived, and it had exactly the same issue. Kobo support again told me to get a replacement, and now Im getting a refund instead because I dont have confidence that round 3 would be any better. Save your money and get a different case (and maybe a backup power bank because the Kobo Sage has a pretty terrible battery life).

So yes the sleep cover aspect works. It’ll provide some level of protection for your Kobo Sage. But it’s going to come at a cost and it’s the weight. The Sage is by no means a light ereader, coming in heavier than the model it replaced. And this cover halves again at least the weight. It’s fine if you’re sitting up but if you’re laying down it becomes a bit frustrating. It’s a shame too because they could have made this lighter by using different materials. It could have been thinner overall as well. Ultimately this does what it’s advertised to do. But I wouldn’t recommend it. The level of protection isn’t significant unless you throw your Sage into a big backpack without a care.

This is a nice cover. It doesnt feel slick, like it will slip out of your hand and it allows the Sage to go to sleep when closed. The only complaint I have is that there is no access to the power button. That seems like very poor planning for a cover made specifically for this device. You have to remove the device from the cover to reach the power button. I feel like I paid a pretty high price for this to have this glaring problem. I should have researched more, now I know I can get a $15 cover that has the ability for sleep and wake-up AND an access point to the power button.

i like that it snaps on with magnets, which hold the ereader in securely but easy to take out. feels high quality, but is not. within a month, two of the corners on the front cover are starting to peel. that’s par for the course with a $15 product, but at this price??? no.

The light green is lovely. The origami aspect works. The Sage easily and steadfastly fits into the magnetic cover which has a hard shell backing. Its smooth to the touch but has a wrinkled looking surface. The only slight is the power button is covered by it. If the Sage has gone to sleep while the cover is open, you just have to close and open the cover to waken the Sage. If you do wish to get to the power button, you can easily pull the Sage out of the cover.

The cover is nicely made and the device fits in perfectly. I love the sage color as it falls in the color family of my favorite color green. The only draw back for me is one the limited amount of colors that the cover come in and two the price. While the cover is of good quality I feel the price is a little on the upper end for it.

I got mine from ebay because I couldnt find it on Amazon back in December but I wanted to leave a review. I could not find any 3rd party covers except for one seller with about a dozen designs but all a bit too flashy and none that I liked so I bought the official one for $55. It is very soft and safe for screen, very simple and elegant design. It works very well as a sleep cover, but as another review already mentions, it blocks the power button, which you probably dont need to use anymore except if the sage falls asleep with the cover off, you have to put it on and off to turn off sleep mode, which isnt too big a deal but a design flaw. Also, Im not sure how it actually works, how it detects the cover, but its magnetic. I placed it on a metal surface with the cover off and it puts the sage in sleep mode, as if the cover is on. Just something to note. Also, the top and bottom of the spine had a sliver of the material rip away, again not a big deal, I just cut it so the rip doesnt spread, but it is looking wore and Ive only had it for 3 months. Overall I would recommend it, seeing as theres little 3rd party options right now; I liked it more than I expected and works great but it is pricey for the craftsmanship. In 1yr from now, there might be more options that can be better but right now its the best.
