> 3 dayI use wood shims to help set rocks securely in a vise before slabbing them in a slab saw. I had been using what my local hardware store usually had - always picking up 10 or 20 at a time because they get broken or lost in oil or stolen by the gnomes. I had been using Nelson kiln-dried wood shims for years because thats what my local store always carried... They work but they dont have a lot of give to them and often break instead of bend. I am sure they have lots of other great functions, but now that Ive found these Pine shims, I dont think Ill ever use anything else.... The point of using shims in the vise is to protect your vise pads - so the stone digs into the shims but not into the pads. These have GREAT bite. You can really see the rock sinking into the shim when tightening the saw. And I love how you get 120 for just $22. This is the brand Im sticking with from now on.
