It had a bit of a funny smell at first but it went away quickly, Also the lid that goes over the paint tray part can be a bit tricky to get on, but after a few uses it got easier. It cleans up pretty easy and so far I havent had any staining from the paint (I use acrylic craft paints). I also love that my small pallet bowls/cups fit inside and slot into the brush rests like a little drain rack, its gotten me out of the habit of stacking them which usually resulted in them drying stuck together.
