Here is our review on the Norton Ghost 14. As I reap the benefits of not losing data and having a back-up system in place, but have no technical experience, Im calling on my techie husband (hes a professional IT guy) to give you the technical run-down from a pros view: Want the ability to preserve those treasured photos or the video of the babys first steps? Need to recover the computer from a specific time and day when it was working correctly? Then youll want to checkout Symantecs Norton Ghost 14. Norton installed without any problem. I set it to back up the entire Photo directory (30gb) which it completed without any problems. The user interface is clean and easy to manage backups by date and time. The scheduling feature is great for those unattended weekly backups. Ghosting the entire drive to another drive (160 gb to a 500 gb in about 1 hr, both SATA), the process completed, but the O/S kept trying to register itself with Microsoft as if it were installed for the first time (yes, even after the original primary drive was removed from the system). I didnt have this problem with the stand alone version of Ghost 2003 (requires boot disk). Recovery point(s) work like file folders, each backup becomes a recovery point with all the data from the backup stored in the folder. This is handy if changes were made to the system between backup and something went wrong. Just go to the last working restore point and you are back in business. This suite of backup and restore tools are great to have on hand for any system as they are easy to use, easy to install, and provide a easy to follow approach to managing system maintenance.

I use Norton Ghost 11 to backup/restore XP partitions, its fast and works great. Boot from CD, choose partition to backup/restore, choose destination partition/file, and you are done. It even compresses the data when doing backup to image file. I tried to boot from the Norton Ghost 14 CD and it gave an I/O error and stopped. Im going back to v11, Ive never had any problems with it.

The product was ok, but not all it was cracked up to be. I hope new versions are better. Continued licensure is required to reclaim your backups..so be warned.

I bought this software thinking it would have more capabilities and functions. Had I not gotten a good deal on it, it would not have been worth purchasing.

Great product, does what it is supposed to do, once it is installed, but the installation!!! Once I found the link that allowed their tech to figure out what was wrong, and that took me some doing, after I had tried to install it a couple of times, including using the Norton Utility that is supposed to clean out old Norton installations, it took the tech about an hour to figure out what the problems were and fix them. He was excellent, superb, obvioiusly in South Asia, and you have to be willing to allow them to take over your computer, but why was it so difficult (I run Windows XP on AMD Athlon) to install, and so hard to find the on line tech support link?

This product is not for the novice. The start-up book that accompanies the CD does not provide sufficient instructions to the novice. I had to have a friend help with the gosting of my small hard drive to my large hard drive. He used a five year old copy of Ghost to accomplish this effort.

Works well and reliably. I upgraded from version 9 which worked well for many years, but isnt compatible with Vista. Norton support was there when I needed them. I can only compare it to MS back-up which never worked for me when I needed it. Dont bother with MS.

For the most part it does what its suppose to do. Excellent for maintianing a Back-Up. Particular problem encountered was; this Ghost works within Windows, with something running in the background that we could not identify and shut off, it would not make a good copy we could use when copying a worn out hard drive to a new one. It would copy but not run (tried three times). Solution; Had to find a copy of older Ghost 12 which works outside of windows, it made the copy, worked fine copying the primary disc to new hard drive, worked first time. We then reloaded Ghost 14 to use as a backup program for new Backup hard drive, works well. This may be particular problem for what we had running, but Ghost 12 had no problem.

This program is a MUST have if you are serious about protecting the data on your system! It will save you from worry that will take years off your life when your system eventually crashes and you are in peril of loosing all of your vital information. This Norton Backup utility is the Dean of software in this class. What else could you expect from the Norton people ? This robust backup package features a full system backup that backs up EVERYTHING on your hard drive or partition, A file and folder backup where you can selectively choose files and/or folders that you want to protect instead of doing the whole drive. Comprehensive system protection will let you do a recovery even when you cannot boot your OS. This package will point to FTP sites and will allow you to restore your system anywhere! Now this version has a Google Desktop integration using search able backup indexes that make the recovery super fast. This Norton 14.0 will back up other Norton Ghost installations version 12.0 or higher. Norton uses its exclusive ThreatCON integration where it will automatically back up your latest files when the ThreatCon meets or exceeds a specified level that you set. Norton claims that this feature is good for people who have PCs without antiviral protection. In the past, previous versions of Norton Ghost have appeared to have problems doing incremental backups but this version appears to have solved that problem. Installation is a breeze that will let even the most naive computer novice get the system up and running in moments. Finally, this is a great resource for protecting your system from those eventual crashes. Although people have complained about this product in the past, all that is needed to make the product perform as stated is to READ the instructions and FOLLOW those instructions as the company intended. Then it should work as advertised
