We had an extension added after moving in, so our original home inspector didnt check that outlet. I used this device to check outlets that had been reported good as well as the new one. They all looked fine according to the test. I also went to the bathroom to check for the GFCI function. Again it looked fine, then it tripped and all of the lights went out. I reset the outlet and tested again and everything still reported correct. My only have two small complaints: the LEDs are not super bright, the GFCI button was easy to hit while removing the device from a socket. (I accidentally did the GFCI test twice because of hitting that button after the reset was done)

I always prefer doing my own electrical work when possible, especially small things such as changing outlets. Having this has made it a lot easier to make sure theres no power going to the outlet Im about to switch out, compared to in the past of having to use whatever I could find laying around just to see if it would power on at all. This also tells you if all is working correctly with the outlet you stick it into, which is an issue I ran into a few months ago when I had a loose ground wire and only wish I would have had one of these back then.

I always use a tester like this whenever I work on an outlet just to double-check the right breaker is off, and its good to use it again afterwards to confirm youve wired everything correctly. I tried the GFCI test and it worked, and I tested a connection without a ground and it correctly detected it. The LEDs are brighter looking straight on rather than down. A suggestion for the future would be printing the chart on both sides when used in upside-down outlets, though you really only need to reference it when it reads something other than correctly wired.

I plugged this into my ground fault circuit, pushed the button, and it showed me exactly what the problem is.

I am slowly replacing sockets in my house and am using this device to check the overall health first. This helps me to determine which outlets to replace first. This has been very reliable so far and is working great with GFCI outlets too. Recommending.

This is a basic device that is great to have for handy people at home. It can easily diagnose if your old house outlets are improperly wired. There are multiple clear light patterns to indicate the situation. You could also use it to just test if an outlet is live. The GFCI tester works great at knocking out the GFCI in a circuit and I used it to find what outlets are connected downstream of a GFCI. Turns out my kitchen has two distinct circuits.

Great GFCI tester. Its been put to work and already found a fault caused by a bad connection elsewhere on the line.

It works but is not color coded and plastic on female end breaks easily.
