New to doing my own tiling of shower/bath surrounds. On the first bathroom I used the cheap traditional gray wire type mesh and it doesn’t stick well even though it’s “self-adhesive” and was a pain to cover well with mortar plus the top edge was beyond my tile edge and nearly impossible to cover and make look smooth once I used drywall compound and paint. I used The Kerdi mesh on the second bathroom and it is smooth and easy to apply Mapei water defense to. It left no holes or gaps for water to leak through. Kerdi brand products are pricey but I think this one is worth it from my experience.

First of all, I bought this after watching a YouTube video about how to waterproof a bathroom wall next to a shower. Since the damage occurred after only a 2 year old bathroom reno, I had to put up something I wouldnt have to repair every 2 years. The YouTube video prescribed putting down a layer of thin-set, cutting the Kerdi-band to fit the space, laying it into the thin-set, allowing to dry completely and then fill in with joint compound, painting with Kilz 3 primer because it has more water proofing, and then painting. Im not a professional, and this took time but the install went really well! I recommend Schluters Kerdi-Band for waterproofing!

I use it for corner joints with thinset and no problem.

It is a bit more expensive than other methods to use for bathroom infrastructure, but they are quality products.

I know this stuff is expensive but I think its worth it for piece of mind. Im a DIYer and didnt have any problem installing. Went whole hog and bought the kit that includes the shower curb, shower pan and all the sheets and bands that were needed. I have to admit that my first batch of thin-set was too thick and skinned over before I could put up the first 4 sheet of Kerdi sheeting so I had to take it down, scrap the wall of thin-set and do it over. Remember to use unmodified thin-set everyone!
