I tired a Western Digital drive that did not work with my PC or Win 10. Took hours on the phone with Best Buy tech support, and still the drive would not backup files using Win 10 built-in File History backup software. I discovered the drive would not wake the PC to run backup during off hours. It eventually stopped responding altogether, couldnt format, read or write data, so I had to returned it. This Seagate drive worked perfectly right out of the box, even using File History. I decided to try the Seagate Toolkit program for backing up my files. It is much more versatile than the built-in for Win 10, and easier to use. I highly recommend it over the Win 10 version, and the Seagate drive.

Im using the Seagate STEL6000100 with a 2013 MacBook Pro. Even though the MacBook doesnt have USB 3.0 ports, this external HDD is amazingly fast. Over the past month or so, Ive been able to install most of my large sample libraries that I use for making music on the drive. My software is able to load the files from this Seagate drive almost as fast as it does from the internal SSD. Its so large that its the only additional drive I need. I created a 1 TB partition for the Time Machine and that doesnt appear to slow it down at all!

Like having your own steel drum band on your desk! This drive runs hot and as such it will serve you well as a hand warmer during the cold winter months. It is also very loud every once in a while! For a while, I thought that it was the reverberation of the drive against the wood on my desk. However, it is still loud even after placing shock absorbing silicone footings on the drive. It takes a bit of concentration to ignore all the clicking and clacking noise coming from this drive. I have another Seagate drive that is barely audible. But this one, if it could keep a rhythm, would equate to having my own steel drum band playing on my desk. The drive is perfectly compatible with Mac; just plug it in and youre ready to go. I use it as a data drive for my huge collection of movies instead of how it is marketed, as a backup drive. It could be a backup drive, but I would never keep a physical backup on site. The two USB ports in the front work great and sold me on this drive. The status light is the best that I have seen on any drive. It has a soft faded transition instead of the annoying rapid blinking found on older drive cases. Seagate desperately needs to muffle this drive and throw in a cooling fan. It runs too hot leading me to trust it only because I use an online backup service.

Capacity and tech support is excellent sleep mode for the purpose Im using it isnt very effective cuz its not connected to the computer its actually connected to a TV so I had to get a on/off switch for a USB hub so I can shut off the drive when its not connected to the TV which houses home movies

I rated this 5 stars because the item itself is as stated and is a good hard drive. Just beware, I didnt read when I bought it, it needs to be plugged in and stay plugged in. Meant for more desk top type setup.

This large external hard drive purchase was right on time. My previous drive showed signs of soon to be failure and I needed to move my data quickly. This device was an easy plug and play. I elected to shrink the drive to 1TB for general use and allocate another terabyte for my music files. I left the remaining space unallocated for future to either extending the existing logical drives or creating new logical drives. It has a relatively small footprint IMO and I like the two USB ports for charging. During registration of the drive I was offered data recovery plan that provides coverage for hard drive failure, viruses, software issues, and other problems that can cause data loss. The rescue plan is also transferable which is a good as well. At only $15 for 3 years, this was no brainer for me.

I have 2 identical drives setup to mirror each other for data protection. 1 drive runs consistently at least 10 degrees hotter than the other. Same environment for both drives. Worried about quality control and length of time before a drive fails. Too soon to know as of now.

I know one can get a lemon sometimes, but how Seagates customer service dealt with the matter left me discouraged. Seagate states they provide a 2 year warranty, but let me share with you my experience in dealing with the dead drive covered by support/warranty ... The product was purchased about 90 days ago, but was not used for several weeks; and thereafter, usage was light (for example, Time Machine backups for a couple laptops). Then after about 2 months of use it died last week. I attempted to locate another adapter to confirm that the adaptor was not the issue, but was unable to locate the unique one that comes with this unit (Seagate power supply: 12V 3A / barrel outside 5.5mm inside 2.5mm center positive). Therefore, I contacted customer service regarding the matter and they asked me to purchase one to test their drive. Yes, they wouldnt send me a replacement adaptor to test their product, but rather wanted me to purchase one. So with that support interaction, I elected to return the unit under their product warranty coverage. That is when I was informed that they only warranty the product and DO NOT cover sending the product back to them to replace. And BTW, their warranty replacement unit will be a refurbished unit, not a new one ... another surprise in warranty coverage. Today I mailed the drive to Seagate, and my wallet is another $20+ dollars lighter ... YIKES. Therefore, due to the experience of the units life (60 days with light usage) and Seagates support/warranty, I have to rate this product a ZERO!

Nice drive. Works with Mac & Win. Pre-formatted NTFS and includes Mac & Win Start Here apps. One nice bonus from Seagate is that if you need to write to their NTFS drives with both Win and Mac - is that you can download a free copy of Paragon Driver for Mac OS: [...] This driver provides write access for Seagate external drives in Mac OS without having to reformat. It detects the drive manufacturer and only mounts an NTFS drive as read/write if its Seagate. Other NTFS drives mount in read only format so you can copy from them and write to your new Seagate drive from a Mac. I had to move almost 4 TB of multimedia files from an older LaCie USB3 drive to this new Seagate 8TB drive. I tried it on my Win7 machine and was only getting about 20 MB/s transfer speed. I mounted it on my MacBook Pro and tried rsync - got about 60 MB/s. Then I used MC Midnight Commander and I can get about 100 MB/s transfer speed from Lacie to the new Seagate. The limitation is definitely the write speed to the Seagate on the SMR drive. Writing large bulk data transfers to the Seagate is acceptably fast. Later file operations, comparing, moving, etc. will be slower.

Ive owned several of these for my own home-computers and theyre still ticking after several years. I just bought this Backup Plus Hub Desktop 6TB for my work computer and I HOPE it holds up as well as all of my other Seagate External Drives have, especially since Im putting a lot of data on it that I need to get off of my very full 500GB hard drive! All of the other negative reviews are concerning for sure, but then again, a lot of people dont stop to write a review when theyre happy about a product, so Im hoping this plays into the number of negative reviews and Ill say that while a lot of people have complained about Seagate, I cant say a nice thing about a single WD drive Ive ever owned so Ive been using Seagate for a lot of years because of this experience with WD. Good luck and if you have a good experience with your Seagate drive, or any product, please dont forget to post it so things are more evenly weighted.
