Synology makes a great product. Never let me down. Even switching from a 4 bay to a 6 bay and then back it kept all my data in tact.

So far this is a great NAS system; took very little time to set it up, configure it, get it on the network, and start using it. Ive had no issues with the product at this point. However, one of the reasons I chose this model and purchased extra memory was so that I could have quick and easy VMs when needed, but the VM capability requires an extra license that doesnt come with the unit.

Gonna keep this short. I got the Synology 6 bay NAS DiskStation DS1621+. Great unit. Does everything I wanted except video/plex steaming. (Itll do it, but not well) If youre looking for a streaming box, get an Intel Xeon unit. Intel will have hardware to let you view those 4K encoded videos. But I kitted out mine. Max RAM, Max SSD Cache, and Max HDD. Its more than I need, but Its been super reliable for me. Even in power outages (your milage may vary. I do recommend at least a 2.5 or 10GbE card if you need extra bandwidth. Be sure your computers MoBo supports it if you plan to directly connect it. In short, if you dont need a video connection or video streaming, this is a great option.

Love my NAS great for a pandemic Plex server. Make sure to get NAS drives not desktop drives.

Incredible performance! I upgraded from a DS413 and this is noticeably faster and I’ve got two more slots to work with. No regrets besides the initial cost. Expecting 8 years out of this one

I introduced myself to Synology back in 2015 when I purchased my first NAS, the DS1515+. Prior to this I used compaq servers over the years to provide reliable NW file storage. I like the Synology product as DSM is quite feature rich. I have an extensive background in NW and FS technologies so for me DSM was a nice fit with a minimal learning curve. Synology does a nice job at marrying HW, NOS and feature rich applications that dont require a-lot of tweaking to get running and fine-tune. Since then added the DX717 expansion and I am currently running 30TB of HD storage using both BTRFS and EXT4 FS. I was having some issues on the DS1515+ with BTRFS FS. I was unable to resolve issues with CHECKSUM errors corrupting files. After 6 years the DS1515+ chassis also would fail to power on at times after scheduled maintenance shutdowns. So, I decided it was time to replace the main unit and I did so with the DS1621+. All issues resolved at this time and BTRFS is rock solid. I like the snapshot abilities of this FS and its advantages over EXT4. I installed 2ea seagate NVMEs in a read/write cache utilizing RAID1 and the speed of my websites are breathtaking! Overall I am quite pleased with the DS1621+. I was expecting more out of the RYZEN CPU in respect to transcoding with PLEX and the reason I took 1-star off my overall review of this product. I did see quite the improvement in Surveillance station when scrubbing security videos on this platform. I run 10 HD cams running 1080P at 30FPS and this unit does so with minimum effort. This box defiantly outperforms the DS1515+ by far and the disk transfer rates are in par with the documented specifications. Hopefully Ill get another 6+ plus years of good use out of this product. I am running DSM 7 and I really like the changes and features in this version of DSM. The built in NVME slots provided me with 2 additional slots I can now populate with mechanical HDs for additional FS storage.BTW I recently upgraded my Apple TV HD devices with the Apple TV 4K units and transcoding demands on PLEX have dropped significantly. So at this time PLEX is able to stream all of my multimedia through out my NW seamlessly and reliably. Love it!

Amazon Reviewers-before I ordered this Synology unit I downloaded, read, and reviewed the “Synology 1621+ User Guide”. From a user perspective this document is essentially a technical and specifications explanation of the NAS. It was not very helpful to me for procedures to follow to correctly configure and set up this NAS. However, the “Amazon Reviewers” were outstanding! I read through all of their reviews and submitted my questions for those technical areas for which I needed information, but that was not included in the existing reviews. In every case, responses were made within 24 hours and answered my specific questions. This information permitted me to confirm my selection and to know that this NAS would meet my requirements before I placed my order. Synology Technology- since December 31st this NAS has performed perfectly. However, I needed additional assistance for the set up and configuration. I contacted Synology for assistance and could not have asked for better support. The technician for my support case has answered all of my questions. Inquiries submitted during the week are answered with 24 hours. The technician who is assisting me always provides comprehensive answers to my questions. He also includes technical publication extracts related to my question with Screen Prints and the device Path. Better solutions to my strategies are also provided. I wish that Synology had “Remote Connect” but that is not available. The technician suggested that I create a Word document with Screen Prints and upload that Word document from the Synology technical support website (portal). This has worked so far. I am adding six WD 10 TB Red NAS Pro HDDs and should complete my setup and configuration next week. Adding a HDD, one at a time requires about 10-15 hours to complete. At this juncture the 1621+ has performed perfectly and the NAS performance is outstanding!

Everything works great. Love the Ryzen processor. I do recommend you get the memory upgrades. I got the 16GB, and the software seems to use excess RAM as disk cache so that is nice. I am so happy with it, I think I will go ahead and upgrade to 10Gb and NVME caches as well.

Have had this for 10 months now, I did max out the ram to 32GB, all bays populated with WD Red Pro drives, along with a DX517 also populated with WD Red Pro drives. The system drives are in an SHR2 array, and the DX517 in a second SHR2 array. Im also using an SSD cache drive (iirc, Samsung EVO drive). Transfer between the system drives and the external are at about 120MiB. Im also getting about the same transfer speed over my gigabit network connection. As to the review comment on USB speeds... You are probably better off adding 10GB Ethernet, though if youre using spinning drives, it wont really matter as USB is faster than what youre going to get out of the drives. Ive setup Plex server for the first time, which was relatively pain free, although the service does seem to have a bug where Plex will hang and need to be restarted on occassion... am considering a crontab to automate this check/restart. I have also enabled SSH. The Application Portal for reverse proxy is a really nice addition, though Im now using a dedicated Raspberry pi for wireguard, pihole and reverse proxy since Docker on this device is a pain, more so without docker-compose. All in all, a night and day difference from my old NAS. That said, many of the applications Ive tried to run arent worth running on this device. If you consider anything beyond file storage a bonus, youll be very happy.
