AquaClear 20 Activated Carbon Inserts, Aquarium Filter Replacement Media, 3-Pack, A1380

Ordered for my mother whom wants it easy when replacing her carbon. Aquaclear has been around for ages, so using their pumps + inserts is generally a no brainer. I dont personally order these (or any of the larger size) as I make my own as I have too many tanks and its generally cheaper if/when I need carbon.

The product is easy to install. I applied 3 carbons to my fish tank and the water became clear and clean after two days. It saved me a lot of time to keep changing the water. What I need to do is just to add water when it goes below the water level.

Although the Aqua Clear 20 is made in Italy, the replacement carbon is made in China. The first thing I noticed when I opened the package was a strange smell. At first I did not know where it was coming from, then I realized that what I just opened up definitely smelled like raw chicken. Even after rinsing repeatedly with salt water it still had this strange odor. I was worried about using this in my aquarium; I eventually washed it twice with mild soap and water (I wonder what this will do to the carbon), then I rinsed it with salt water and it finally smelled OK to me. What the hell are they doing at the plant where this carbon is made? I think in the future I may make my own filters using these mesh bags that are sold separately at some pet stores. (you can buy activated carbon you can buy in bulk).

Its cheaper carbon. It works as good as it can. I personally moved away from carbon because you cant tell when it stops working. I now use purigen ad my fish are WAY happier.

Made the switch from Aquaeon to AquaClear after reading a buttload of reviews. The Aqueon filter I had on my 10 gallon tank never really cleared up the water completely, it also left a slight odor and I was always fighting the algae. I read it was because the filter media was inadequate and clogged up quickly. I tossed out the Aquaeon and installed the AquaClear filter along with the activated carbon. Results are like night and day. Water looks completely clear with no odor. Ill definitely keep buying these.
