For my money, the top Western/Civil War movie of all-time. Great action, deep story and themes.

I try my best to raise my sons and teach them about their heritage. I wanted to teach them about the evils of slavery and needed a pretty good documentary to do the job. I thought Roots might be too adult for kids that are three and five years old so I went with Django Unchained. It is directed by a famous director of other really good kids movies so I thought I would give it a try. I was great and the kids loved it too!!! They even learned a new word... I guess it is true that kids pick up words when they hear a it over and over. Our favorite part of the movie is when Django played by Ray Charles ( I dont know how a blind guy can be so accurate with a gun but it is a movie. ) shot off the wiener of the bad whitey in the bathtub. Epic scene. My sons watch it over and over and study it close. They might be actors some day because they like to act out the scene. They fill up their squirt guns and will chase the mailman. The mailman will play along and let the boys squirt him in the crotch and he pretend his bits were blown off while we all laugh and laugh. Good Times!

Sergio Leones classic western ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST has aged well and shows it still has staying power in this age of CGI and Green Screens. The basic story was that a Rail Road tycoon, dying, needs the land a man, who knows whats coming, has a vision to develop. As he waits to greet his new wife as she comes in on the train to be picked up by the mans son, all the family are murdered by a hired gunslinger (Henry Fonda). To cast Henry Fonda against type was a masterful stroke. Fonda plays the villain so well you want to hiss and boo him whenever hes on the screen. This was one of the films that was to make Charles Bronson a star in the near future.( Fonda and Bronson have a history in the film and Bronson wants revenge against Fonda for killing his older brother. An incident Fonda doesnt even remember. To him it was just another job.) Jason Robards held his own against the other stars and showed why he was a big star in his own right as an escaped killer himself.. And who now, can see anyone but Claudia Cardinale in the role as the widowed young bride. Youll get a lot of people wholl say this isnt the classic film it actually is. Theyll say Leones The Good. The Bad and The Ugly was a better film because of the great cast he put on celluloid or that Sam Peckinpahs The Wild Bunch(a classic film in its own right) was even better than both of these. However, this was basically Leones love song to the American Western. (Duck You Sucker was his next and last classic western. Sometimes called A Fistful of Dynamite to play against the other FISTFUL films Clint Eastwood was in. And if you dont see the full length version of that film, you have done yourself a disfavor). However, if you watch all three of these films again and watch the little nuances in Leones OUATITW (the long non-stop end tracking shot alone was worth the price of admission or the cost of buying it on DVD or BLU-RAY.) Not nearly as much blood as Peckinpahs TWB,but that was one of the things about this film. You think its more violent then it actually is. How much blood do you really see Leones SPFX men spill? People will say a lot against my review but Leone made his films in Italy and Spain and they actually look more like the American west than does any western filmed in the U.S. Say what you will but this is still the BEST WESTERN ever committed to film. Sergio Leone was a film genius and all his films prove that. I stand by this statement as a film director myself. If you have never seen this motion picture on the large screen, youve missed out. The second best way is to watch the BLU-RAY on a 55 television screen (or even bigger if you can). And youll see one of the greatest films in the history of the western movie envisioned by a true maestro of film.
