This is best bang-for-the-buck audiophile investment I ever made. Signals traveling from distant data centers/ ISPs contain timing disruptions that add to the electrical noise from a modem to cause a surprising level of audio / video degradation that can be mitigated by filters. But why mitigate when you can eliminate? Converting Ethernet signals to optical and back eliminates both problems for less than $80.00 if you choose to upgrade Ethernet cables as well. (I linked an Arris 3.1 modem by an insulated 18 Cat 8 Ethernet cable to one optical converter, connected by a 6 optical cable to the other, and then by an insulated 6 Cat 8 cable to the Ethernet hub of an MacBook Air M2. Uninsulated Ethernet cables act like aerials and cause the sound to be excessively bright.) Whats the benefit of freeing Ethernet signals from jitter/ noise? Firstly, Internet webpages will snap open in half the time with full color saturation, movies depending on original quality will be noticeably enhanced with crisper image and more accessible/ open sound. Listening on headsets, I often find myself checking that the sound is not playing through the Macs speakers and waking my apartment neighbors because the sound-stage has so expanded. That sound-stage expansion, lack of background noise, and emergence of the smallest musical detail are particularly marked when listening to classical music via USB cable as jitter degradation from an Ethernet connection largely collapses it. Looking to fix that problem is how I happened on this solution of optical conversion which I highly recommend. Below are the description and links to avoid any confusion from an unanchored product review: This package of Open SFP Slot A Pair of 1.25G/s Gigabit Fiber Ethernet Media Converter 10/100/1000Base-Tx to 1000Base-SX SMF RJ45 to SFP Slot, Support SFP Gigabit modules up to 120KM( 2 Pack) is plug and play once the LC to LC Fiber Patch Cable OM3 for dual mode is added (all thats needed for short runs.) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08Z7BZG5K https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BYKGGS2

I am using this device to connect my barn to my house. The barn is about 300ft from the house and I was nervous about the Ethernet limit of 330ft. This fiber to CAT converter is a low cost option that works really well, very easy to setup and use.

ran 100M of fiber for lightning isolation, bought these to connect them. Laziness really, because i have sfp cages on both sides. These worked with the fiber which i basically tried to screw up the install, for months. I recently took the SFP transceivers out and put them in two different branded switches, and it works fine. I will be buying more SFP transceivers to replace these so i can experiment with running fiber. Basically, if you want a cheap way to test fiber runs, that you can use for a long time, i think these are a good buy.

I live in a rural area where I receive internet access via an antenna on a 50-foot tower. The receiver on the tower is wired with a 150-foot ethernet cable that plugs into a network controller. Although the tower cable has a surge suppressor, a lightning strike fried it and came down the ethernet cable to damage the rather expensive controller. After much troubleshooting and repair, I decided that even a short fiber optic cable link between the tower and my equipment might prevent a recurrence. These relatively inexpensive converters accept the ethernet cable input/output and convert it to light pulses for transmission between the two converters. The fiber optic could be any length, but it can interrupt the electric surge.
