NeatReceipts Scanalizer Professional 2.5 Mobile Scanner and Software

Although I cant give this product a perfect five-star rating, it still is worth the investment. I am impressed with the overall accuracy of the OCR capibility and the flexibility of the filing system. The major drawback for me is the lack of full integration with the newer versions of Quicken, which is my main financial management software. It requires several extra steps to transfer all the scanned info and not all the fields that I need in Quicken are available in the scan batch. However the ease of use and the fact that receipt, bsn card and other documents can be stored with a compact device on-the-run compensate for most of the awkwardness.

I operate a small business. I purchased this unit to scan credit card sales merchant copies. Pluses: compact. Fits unobtrusively on my desk. USB powered so no bulky transformer. Resolution is high enough to print from. Minuses: I dont need the cloud storage service and it just adds another layer of unnecessary complexity to installing and using the device. My system (Windows 7 Pro) does not always detect the device. I have to unplug and insert plug several times before it appears. The scanner does not do any background removal so the images are gray. The unit has a hard time feeding the thermal paper used on credit card terminals. There is no automatic cropping of the image so if you want to save disk space you have to go in and crop each scan separately.

I read the very positive review of this gadget in one of David Pogues recent NYT Friday articles. Hes such a switched on guy and thus I ordered one straight away. I travel to interstate jobs and I get reimbursed for cab fares from and to the airport etc. This scanner reads the receipts, I can input the category of the expense, the vendor etc etc. I can specify whether it is an account, a receipt or just a document being scanned. I can specify if it was a personal or reimbursable expense. It can be converted directly into a pdf file. I bought a new piece of equipment for my home theatre this week and I have copied the receipt and printed it out onto a full sheet of paper for warranty purposes. (Ever had a warranty issue and cant find that tiny proof-of-purchase receipt a year or two down the track?) Im also using the scanner to copy all my petty cash receipts for the month. The software then enables me to print out a list of that months expenses and it adds em up and totals them too. It will scan documents from the size of a small receipt up to a sheet of letter stationery. BTW you can scan in business cards and the scanner will tabulate the addresses, phone Nºs etc. Sure I can use my big desktop scanner, but its a hassle to set up and warm up etc. This small USB-driven scanner is portable and instantly usable.

I was very excited about this scanner. I purchased from Amazon because it was cheaper. The disk that came with the scanner did not work with my Mac, even though I purchased the Mac version. I tried to download software directly from Neat.com, but the product key on the disk I purchased from Amazon did not work with the Neat website. Neat wont provide service since I did not buy it from them. I dont have the box as I am traveling and had to discard, so now I cant return it. Waste of time and money.

I have used NeatReceipts for several years and this little scanner really does a great job. Doesnt take up much room and after you are thru using it, just unplug it and put it in a drawer for next time. I save my receipts for a couple of weeks and then scan them all at one time. This really helps when tax time comes as many people find out that the receipts you get from the stores are thermal printed and the information on the receipts disappear/fade after awhile and if you cant read them, thats a problem. This scanner along with the NeatReceipts software can save a lot of headaches when compiling your receipts for the year.

I just received my NeatReceipt scanner today. I paid over $160 for this thing, so I expected it to be awesome, you know? Ok, after 2 hours of fussing around with it, here is my initial review: 1. The scanner is kind of budget looking. I dont know why, but I got a cream colored USB data cable with mine - personally I think it looks unprofessional since it doesnt match the unit. 2. The calibration is annoying. They include the calibration sheets with the unit - you cant scan anything until you use the sheet. Thats fine with me, but based on that information, I have to keep the damn sheets because I format my PC about once a year and it wont work if I dont keep the sheets. Ugh! 3. The software: awful! The software was clearly outsourced. The company did a poor job focusing on what features are important and what features are not. Here are my general complaints about the software: - Its slow. It takes 30 seconds to boot and I am running a $1500 Dell PC. - Its not intuative. Once you scan an image in its hard to manipulate (e.g. zoom in) on the image... - Scanning multiple documents is super hard. I thought you could just scan in each page of a contract in and then merge them together (that seems like it would obvioulsy be a feature, right?) but you cant. You have to open the program, make a new document, and then go to the software and go to Scan->Scan Additional Image to add a second page to a document. Its so dumb that you cant merge... that makes no sense! - Speed of the scanner is not that impressive. I just scanned a 2 foot grocery receipt in and it took about 25 seconds. I thought it would be faster. - Scanning in long receipts = problems. The scanner cut out 3 times while it was scanning and did not complete my image. Overall: Product is not ready for market! Wish I didnt spend the $160 since I could have gotten a really nice high-res scanner for cheaper. Thinking about sending it back but I bet the return policy from the Amazon seller I got it from is awful.

I purchased Neat Receipts after reading mostly positive reviews here and elsewhere but have been disappointed. At least 75% of receipts scanned are not read completely or improperly, and I end up manually typing everything into the program. Many businesses now use the carbonless receipts and the customer copy is a light yellow with faint imprinting. Neat Receipts will not recognize these types of receipts - I realize they are difficult but are also a large percentage of what I have to work with. Right now it is gathering dust on the shelf as receipts go into a shoe box, just like before. Can you say EBay?

this product is long overdue - a great saver of both time and space - and a great asset to anyone looking to organize and actually run their finances. software could do better at recognizing dates that are written with the month abbreviated instead of numerical and it gets bogged down with receipts that are created with dots - especially useful with thermal receipts that arent left in the sun - once those fade they become almost impossible to read. all in all and excellent product and value - well done

When I first got it I loaded the software, and then tried the scanner. It did not work and I had got the receipt face down. I reloaded the software and downloaded the latest update and the scanner worked. I found that it does not support foreign currencies and usually got the date and the amount wrong (the former was partly because my computer comes from Switzerland. And I was in the USA at the time so my receipts were all American. What I did like was that I can scan all my receipts and export them as a pdf file which I can use to back up my expenses. It also does not import pdf files so that if I save my internet receipt in pdf format, I cannot import it and I have to print it out and rescan it, which seems to defeat the purpose of the paperless office. However, it also offers a business card scanner and it works as a general purpose scanner which is useful when I have to send an electronic scan back to the office. For those based solely in the USA this should do the trick but for those travelling overseas you will still have to do the currency conversion at the next level.

Getting rid of paper receipts by scanning seemed like a sure win. The price of the scanner was fair - under $200, which would have been reasonable if it performed as advertised. I have other scanners (Fujitsui and Brother) which all scan at a reasonable clip, but the neatreceipts is SLOW, very slow and of marginal quality. This device realistically takes 3-5 minutes PER receipt, often receipts need to be re-scanned, and the detection was sporadic. So youd spend 15 min scanning three receipts from a Saturday morning - you could write down the details in an old-fashioned notebook or in an Excel spreadsheet in a few seconds! My first 3 receipts were essentialy unreadable (thought Dollar Store was Dominos & had wrong total, drycleaning receipt couldnt read at all & a clothing store receipt didnt read at all) the software couldnt identify total, name of vendor, etc., the forth receipt read crystal clear & read all of the information perfectly (albeit slowly). Re-scanning & re-typing in the totals, vendor, etc. I wondered why I wasted $ on this device - for its performance, I would have been much better off using a standard scanner, then typing in the info on an excel worksheet. The one receipt that did scan was cool, but a 75% failure rate is unacceptable. Im going to try & return and wait for the next generation on this great but poorly executed idea.
