This product does provide nitrogen to the aquarium but be aware its not super potent: Its 1% Nitrogen - 0% Phosphorous - 2% Potassium. The actual chemical content of this is potassium nitrate and iminium salt (urea). Im of the plant keeping school that says: test your water then add back the deficient nutrients as opposed to the estimative index school (but thats a debate for another forum). To hit 10ppm of nitrogen in a 55 gallon aquarium you need about 10.4ml of this product. Id suggest you look into using dry chemical potassium nitrate. It really is cheaper, easier to work with, and does the same thing (without the name brand label & price) I bought this, but blew right though it in no time because of the low concentration. I say 4 stars out of 5 because it is pretty expensive for how little nutrient youre getting.

Received with no cap, punctured seal and no liquid. Shipping box was wet and green from liquid. Should I bother returning empty bottle?

This should be used with the other 2 macro nutrients for your plants ( Phosphorus and Potassium). You can also buy all three of them together, but buying bulk like this is best. If you have a large planted tank I would suggest going with dry ferts. but this is a good product to get into fertilizing. it has easy to follow instructions and is liquid which is easy to work with. no need to buy measuring spoons either. Their instructions include using the cap. for beginner instructions They suggest 2.5ml (half a cap) for each 40 gallons. So if you have a 20 gallon and continue with the beginner dosing this package would last you maybe 3.8 years. Overall this is good stuff. if you stay on schedule with all of your macro nutrients you will notice a difference. This product will also help to reduce certain types of algae like brown algae (or Diatoms).

Seachem Flourish products are superior. My tanks are looking amazing due to their regimen that I am using with their liquid fertilizers line.

Nitrogen is one of the main three macro nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium: npk) required by plants and can often become the limiting factor to growth in a flourishing system. Flourish nitrogen is a concentrated (15, 000 mg/L) blend of nitrogen sources. It provides nitrogen in both the nitrate form and the preferred ammonium form. However, no free ammonia is released because the ammonium in flourish nitrogen is complexed and unavailable until utilized by the plants. Ammonium becomes available after conversion of urea (carbamide). flourish nitrogen also provides nitrate for those plants that can readily utilize nitrate as well. For Maximum benefit, use with flourish Phosphorus and flourish Potassium. Flourish nitrogen is safe for invertebrates such as shrimp.
