I have a 55 gallon freshwater tank with 34 fish. I have a fluval 306 cannister filter with included media. I do regular 30% water changes weekly and filter cleanings weekly. My water was pretty clear from the front of the tank but looked like a brownish tint from the side (Not Tannins). There were a few times that it was absolutely crystal clear from the side view so I knew it could be clear again! I read that dissolved organic materials need to be removed from the water through water changes or filtration media. I tried to do 2-30% water changes a week and still the brownish tint from the side. I read about 2 Seachem products - 1 Liter Matrix Bio Media and 100ml Purigen Bags. I called the company to get the low down on this stuff and apperantly it is supposed to add much more bacteria to filter and also clarity to water by removing dissolved organic materials. I did a 30% water change, cleaned my filter, left old biomedia in and added the new Matrix. I got 75% of the new Matrix Bio media to fit in the cannister. I will fit the rest in when the new media starts building bacteria. I also added the 2 Purigen Bags to the cannister. I went to bed and in the morning the water was crystal clear. Its been 3 days and still crystal clear-from the front and crystal clear from the side. I am not sure if it was the Matrix or the Purigen that made my water clear but for the cost I would recommend getting both! I will update this if I find that this is just a temporary fix.

I have a new 55 gallon tank about 2 months old, I seeded it with old gravel in panty hose and I squeezed the brown muck into my tank, needless to say I am neurotic and I cant leave my tank alone. I change the water pretty much every other day. My ammonia and nitrite levels have been fluctuating. As soon as they were both 0 I changed the canister water and rinsed the poly pad in aquarium water. I vacuumed the gravel all in the same day and now im having a mini-cycle. I was then told the polypad would fall apart eventually and all I needed in my high powered canister filter was biofilter ceramic media. I have been slowly trying to get to only that but with 2 goldies , I dont want them suffering any ammonia spikes so I keep adding expensive tricks like API-absorb and it works for a day and sometimes up to 5 but not after that. This arrived this evening, I put it in an hour ago went to dinner and everything is at 0! Mind you an hour ago my ammonia was.5 my nitrites were .25.My water was cloudy and it is crystal clear

This product is well known for being excellent at providing a place for beneficial bacteria to grow and flourish. It is not overly expensive so I got some and added it to one tray in my cannister filter. It, along with a tray that has a bioball/ceramic ring combo makes up the bulk of my biological filtration with a large coarse sponge pre-filter helping also. This should be more than enough to handle my 75 gallon tank. I also have some sponge media for mechanical filtration but I like to rinse these with tap water so that the bacteria multiplies where I want it and not on the sponge that will eventually get replaced. The only issues I have are 1. There is at least half of this that is very dense like a rock. It is not all porous. That is not a deal breaker because I want bacteria growing in different ways and hopefully I will attract different types. 2. This really does need a bag to hold it. It will work in the cannister but the smaller pieces move and get wedged under the tray handles preventing it all from stacking correctly. I fit this into two media bags and this just makes it easier to clean but you will need to purchase a bag. Overall, based on reputation alone this is worth having in a tray. There is enough porous rock to justify the cost and now I have a nice diverse set of media in my filter working 24 hours a day.

I havent used this. But. It is Seachem, so it is ok to hang around in the cabinet. I had such an issue with getting control on the ammonia and nitrites. I lost a few fish and Seachem products saved me. I had used API and Tetra products and they didnt seem to help. I used a different ammonia reducer which also works great. So having this on stand-by makes me feel better.

I used the whole thing for my 40 gal because my 10 gal has about 1/4 of it. This is a good product. I will most likely add more and take away 10 lbs of live rock. Water parameter are too good.

This is in fact large enough to not need a media bag when used in a canister filter. With that being said I think it would be better to use a media bag to make it easier to take it out to lightly rinse if it gets too dirty, also will make it easier to reposition. This is a very good product, the bacteria grows rapidly on it and it is the only thing I use on my 120 gallon as far as bio media. I use 1 and a half times the amount suggested and all my parameters are perfect. I also use Purigen to remove organics from the water along with my protein skimmer. I also would recommend that when you put Matrix in you should pour some bio boosting bacteria on it to help kick start the growing process.

I have used this for a while and it works as advertised. My goal was to get my aquariums to be as low maintenance as possible. So i did tons of research and found that bio-media is the most effective way to keep aquarium water at the right parameters. I now use this, purigen and filter floss and my water is not only crystal clear, but also perfect paramaters. My ph is always around 7-7.5 0 nitrates and nitrates and 0 ammonia! I do add water when the tank gets slightly lower and do a 25% water change every couple months! I couldnt ask for a better, low maintenance aquarium! I use this on a 29 gallon angelfish tank as well as a 60 gallon community tank.

125 gal freshwater community tank. 2 Eheim Classic filters containing 10 yrs Eheim Substrat Pro round, sintered glass media that came when originally purchased and installed in aquarium. 9/19/2018 Added to each filter 250ml Matrix+Stability. Nitrate levels at 20-40 ppm Oct 2018 Continued using Stability at water changes and in between, levels down to 10-20 Dec 2018 Added 1 liter Matrix to each canister (each now have 1250ml), removed all of Eheim substrat pro, now only Matrix, continued adding Stability as before. Jan 2019 Continued adding Stability as before, Nitrates consistently measuring 10-20 ppm; then consistently 10 ppm. Feb 25 2019(Today) Success! Consistently Nitrate level at 10 ppm. Soon I will add another 250ml to each canister and I am pretty confident that it will be below 10 ppm Nitrate or Ill keep adding another 250ml Matrix to each until I get it below 10 ppm.

Basically its essentislly pumice stone that is cleaned. It doesnt fall apart. I recommend seeding it with nitrifying and or denitrifying bacteria if you are wanting this to work sooner. Btw not being able to see pores with the naked eye does not mean its not porous. Bacteria are tiny and the holes for them to live in are tiny as well
