I am using one big bag of Seachem matrix in my refugium for biological filtration. I have never seen any issue with nitrates and phosphates in my tank. I don’t use any skimmer... just the bio filtration. I do think that part of my tank success goes to Sechem Matrix.

Large bottle enough for least 6 months, this media is great and transformed my tank that I had let get away from me. I will say my water has looked clearer after using this than other media. After exhausted you can leave it and it will continue to be your biological media after. 2 uses with no change on your part.

I purchased this and the DeNtrate one and the only difference seems to be the size of the stones. If you are putting this in a refillable media cartridge, then the DeNitrate is probably better. But, if its going in a mesh bag or something similar, then this Bio Media would be my preference. Both seem to work just as well.

Ive only had 2 liters of this in my reef tank for 2 months so chemically I can not say if its working but stability with moderate bio-load has been good. Only a few dark pieces found in each container. Im not convinced these are harmful but I took them out for a quarantine tank. Will purchase additional.

Ive only just added this to my canister filter set up...I have a SunSun 304B canister, and added this to my 2nd and 3rd trays. 2L of this was JUST enough to add into 2 trays. I probably should get one more liter and top off both trays. So 3L would probably be PERFECT if you have a similar filter and are trying to fill 2 trays. So far, so good...tank is clearing up. I also added some of this to my HOB filter for my turtle tank and the tank looks great! ONE TIP: Make sure you give these a decent rinse before you add this to your set up...they are pretty dusty out of the bottle, so a very quick rinse will clean that up! Im sharing a pic of the matrix in my trays BEFORE rinsing them so you can see the dust and also see how much two 1 liter bottles will fill.

This product allows me to fully pack some of the trays in my two Fluval 406 canister filters to provide maximum bio-filter capability for my 75 gallon tank that holds multiple 6 goldfish. With a tank setup like mine, there is a large amount of organic waste for the filters to process and this product does a great job for me. I find it works better than the cylinder shape products.

There simply is no better bio media on the market. Heck, there is no other bio media even close to matching the quality of Matrix. Each piece is light weight and holds about an infinite amount of tiny holes for bacteria to colonize. The holes closer to the center of each piece are perfect for creating an anerobic environment for bacteria to colonize and digest nitrates. The holes closer to the edge of each piece, which are where the majority are located, are perfect for aerobic bacteria that consume ammonia and nitrites. All this results in better water quality is more capacity for livestock. Dont buy another brand of bio media, as it will be subpar to Matrix.

This may be no better or no worse than any other filter media. Yes it is just pumice, but Seachem has tested it for pore size and reactivity, it shouldn’t alter water chemistry. 1 liter should be enough to fill one tray in a large canister filter.

This is in fact large enough to not need a media bag when used in a canister filter. With that being said I think it would be better to use a media bag to make it easier to take it out to lightly rinse if it gets too dirty, also will make it easier to reposition. This is a very good product, the bacteria grows rapidly on it and it is the only thing I use on my 120 gallon as far as bio media. I use 1 and a half times the amount suggested and all my parameters are perfect. I also use Purigen to remove organics from the water along with my protein skimmer. I also would recommend that when you put Matrix in you should pour some bio boosting bacteria on it to help kick start the growing process.
