Super Smash Bros - Ultimate (Nintendo Switch) (European Version)

06-06-2025Since the Nintendo 64‘s release, the video game company Nintendo has released a Fighting Game Series called Super Smash Bros. Games where Nintendo characters such as Mario, Luigi, Samus Aran, Ness, Link, Zelda, Pikachu, and many others would enjoy brawl matches between themselves. And since the amazing Super Smash Bros Brawl game on the Wii, more characters from other consoles and Nintendo games have joined the fighters ranks. Solid Snake, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, Greninja; though among my two favourites are Shulk of Xenoblade Chronicles and Bayonetta from the series Bayonetta. In this game made for the Nintendo Switch, Super Smash bros Ultimate offer many game content for fans and newcomers. Online brawls, Smash matches with eight players, Mob Smash, Tourneys, Special Smash with twisted obstacles, online matches with worldwide participants, challenges, and story modes. And for that latter aspect, players get a great jackpot. A storyline called World of Light, with all heroes fighting off two armies of darkness and light led by formidable opponents. A game where we explore two worlds. One of Light, another of Darkness. Where we reassemble characters together and advance through fights that allow us to collect spirits linked to popular Nintendo series, but also obscure/neglected ones like Eternal Darkness and Hotel Dusk. Two universes I love, alongside those of Mother whose first and third games really deserve a proper release on Nintendo 3DS or on the Switch. Just like these other classics that need more attention from the public. So for this World of Light storyline, we get a wide exploration and battle on major platforms linked to many games universes we love. But on the downside, I wish that the game director and producers could have offered us cinematics between the characters. Sequences that would happen either before/after the fights, or in between spirits and the playable characters they are friends with. That would have brought us back to the beauty of Super Smash Bros Brawl‘s story mode on Wii. As we saw in that Wii game emotional connections between the characters that were absent in the Switch. Connections revealing the complicity and rivalry amongst the crew. So if there ever were a new game in the Smash Bros series, I hope we will get cinematic moments between characters in the game story mode. More than funny or epic photos we can obtain if we accomplish certain achievements. As for the Classic Mode, an individual storyline for each character; fights set according to certain persons related to his/her life. Either another playable character, or a Major Spirit Opponent (ex: Dracula if we fight as Simon or Richter Belmont). A storyline that concludes with a nice hunt for points through the end credits. Culminating with a funny picture. Though again, I’d wish interactive cinematics would have been offered for these adventures. Apart from these narrative gameplays, fans of game designs will enjoy creating their own stages in the Stage Builder and sharing them online, just like they will love training their own Amiibo figures they have purchased in stores. Another great initiative for fans of Mii players are their chance to design their Mii’s suit. Wearing costumes from all series (Super Mario, Fire Emblem, Legend of Zelda, etc.) Now for the gameplay of Super Smash Bros, the camera angles are the same as in all Smash games. Wide angles that cover the entire stage, which may be cumbersome or confusing for certain gamers. So those who’d prefer their brawl matches with much closer angles may find it cumbersome to play a Smash bros game series and might want to pass. As for the music, Masahiro Sakurai, Yoshino Aoki and Hideki Sakamoto composed a nice range of melodies for the game. Making it grandious, epic. And the addition of tunes from the games mentionned in that console are another great chance for fans to discover of relisten to their tracks. In sum, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is a wonderful chapter in that Nintendo game series and a must if you own a Nintendo Switch. And with the upcoming new characters like Banjo Kazooie and those from Dragon Quest, fans of those two series will be sure to enjoy this fighting-brawl game.
