Uniden Bearcat 980 40-Channel SSB CB Radio with 7-Color Digital Display

Arrived fast and every was the way it should

I’ve bought 2 of these the 980 and the 880 couldn’t adjust mic gain on either one going back to knob radio

*Update: I finally got the radio back after about 5 months. Ive now had it installed again for a few months and its working fine for now. I still never received any correspondence besides an email letting me know they replaced the unit with a new one and it was being shipped out. I updated rating to 3 stats since I did finally receive a new one. I had this radio for a while and everything worked great, but after about 9 months the display died and it seemed to not receive signal anymore. I sent the unit to Uniden for repairs, but after 4 months I have not received the unit back. I have sent several emails to get status updates, but no responses back. The unit is now out of warranty through manufacturer, and Amazon. Hoping to get a response from Uniden here since all other efforts have not yielded results. Poor customer service.

Ok for price

This is my second 980. The first one that I bought two years ago has a defective display that fades out when the radio warms up. As for this unit, so far, so good. Ive had it running for 48 hours now and all is working flawlessly. Regarding shipping I have to say that the seller shipped immediately and the radio arrived a day before it was scheduled. Needless to say, I would buy from this seller again.

I’m not reviewing the radio as I have not used it yet. I noticed a lot of reviews stating that you can’t shut off the beeping noise when changing channels or using other button/knob functions. To remedy (turn offf beeping) press and hold the “ANL/NB” button for one second and no more beeps! It’s in the user manual although it’s poorly defined. No more annoying and unnecessary beeps.

I researched for a week before deciding to buy this one, and it does everything it says it can. After setting the SWR I found some people chatting on channel 38 lower sideband, and asked for a radio check. They told me I was loud and clear, and they were over 20 miles away from my location!! It was even better quality than I thought it was going to be, and I really love that it has 7 colors to choose from. Excellent little radio! Shipping was on time, and the price is right!

Out of the box, the radio is far too dim in bright light. The radio needed extensive modifications to be useful. I changed the backlight diodes so I could see the darn thing. Dead key RF power was only 3.5 watts, and the VFO was off frequency.. The mod was only 70%. I also unlocked the clarifier so that it works with a 10k swing, in transmit AM and SSB. Now, its a great radio. I use it with a Wilson 1000 mag mount antenna. I have made day and night contacts 100 miles AM day, over 200 LSB night. Basically, out of the box, it is a average mass-produced radio.
