Greater than one weekWD My Book 4TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive with Security, Local and Cloud Backup (WDBFJK0040HBK-NESN) I attached this to the NETGEAR Wireless Router - AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit (R6300) USB 3.0 port , plugged in the power and the drive was online through the router. Mapped the network drive on my notebook computer and the drive was available. I have an old Drobo that is plugged into the other (2.0) USB port and I am transferring everything from the Drobo to the WD. Copied a couple of large folders and all seemed to go well. I have not read the manual of looked at any of the included software but as NAS it seems to be working well. 11/22/2013 - I have been copying files from my old Drobo storage device to the new WD My Book and all has been going well. I started playing with the WD apps that come with the drive but nothing seems to work when the drive is connected through a router and not directly to a computer. Id like to be able to use this drive as local cloud storage for our tablet and two phones but have not found an Android app for that yet. If 4TB of router connected storage is your goal then this works well. I the programs provided are most important to you then and you are connecting through a router then maybe this isnt the device for you. I dont know if any USB attached storage devices are going to work the same attached to a router as compared to directly to a computer but his is my only experience dealing with the devices.

> 3 dayIve had two external HD from Western Digital before. My first 2TB hard drives master boot record became corrupted. Through some tinkering some family and I were able to connect it to another computer to copy the data to another HD. Unfortunately, I only had another small (160G) HD in which to transfer data to my new laptop and another smaller HD. Dilema. So, I found this, which was exactly what I needed. When it arrived I connected it to the laptop with the fault, yet somewhat frazzled 2TB HD, and began to copy segmented amounts of data. Once all was done, I was able to format the older 2TB drive which is now in a new enclosure. So far this WD HD has performed perfectly. Ive split the data into different HDs to decrease the chance if this happens again. Ive never had any problems with any Western Digital product. When plugged in, if not in use, it will go into Idle mode. If you click on it to use it again, it may be slow to respond or may say Not responding briefly. This is normal because even though it is ON, it has gone to SLEEP. Saves power and wear.

> 3 dayThis review is specifically for the WD 4TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBFJK0040HBK-NESN. February 23, 2016 Saw a good price on Amazon and immediately ordered the new 4 TB model in order to make System Image backups of all my Windows systems for storage offsite (I dont trust cloud servers). Older MyBook models got occasional data errors on USB 3.0 on a Haswell-based Dell PowerEdge T20, requiring the use of an USB 2.0 port to get backups done perfectly - but not this one. The 4 TB drive runs flawlessly on USB 3.0, and gobbles up the data very quickly at WELL over 100 megabytes per second. And its virtually silent. If you want to be able to use this (or any other WD MyBook) to make Windows System Image backups on Windows 7 or newer systems, you MUST reformat the drive using the Western Digital Quick Formatter tool, which is supplied freely on the Western Digital Support (support.wdc.com) site. Such formatting doesnt take long. Otherwise the backup will fail with an Error 0x8078002A code. After doing the reformat Windows Backup loves the thing. Western Digital has truly perfected the external USB drive with this model. I highly recommend it to anyone who cares even a little bit about losing their data. Take the time to do backups. Do it now.

> 3 dayThis hard drive is a ok NOW after I FIGURED IT OUT MYSELF... but the issue I have is with the company of Western Digital. SERIOUSLY BAD CUSTOMER SUPPORT. I have the newest 2013 Mac Pro (the black cylinder) So I got this hard drive since I need a lot of storage and all my other older USB3 western digital HDs work fine with my computer. I was hoping to get a super fast drive, but I know its a fairly ok model but not the fastest for doing all the massive graphics work I do - but it states very clearly on the site WILL WORK WITH MAC as long as you format the drive (I know what I am doing on that front). Anyway I received the product and right out of the box it didnt work! Frustrating as heck since I needed it immediately and all my other hard drives plug and play instantly with no issues. I tried it in my other computer and still no response. I was hoping I didnt need to call customer support but I had to in the end to see what was wrong. First of all let me explain how bad you can be as a company to offer hard drives that state they work with Mac and APPLE computers but NOT HAVE A DAMN CLUE on the most recent Apple computer. Seriously!? So the tech didnt even know what the newest Mac Pro computer was...I was dumbfounded, but besides the point, he didnt even try to call in a Mac expert in their department, or they dont even have any people on staff who know what a Mac is. So after trying literally everything we BOTH could think of he told me to download the latest USB drivers and install it on my Mac. I did and guess what happened? MY MAC WOULDNT START UP AGAIN! My computer stopped working. He basically said he would call their Tier 2 level support and that no one was available to help me that day....HA! What kind of company offers support but when you have a real issue basically hangs up on you?! Oh and after wiping my computer clean and reinstalling MAC OS it finally came back to life and thank God I had a time machine backup. Then the next day as a last resort I swapped the USB cable that it came with with another cord I had and all of a sudden it worked fine! I admit I should have tried that sooner, but more importantly WHY DIDNT THE TECH SUPPORT GUY TELL ME TO TRY THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE?!?! Seems like it should be standard procedure to tell you to swap a cord to test to see if the piece of junk USB cord it came with is crap. Just bad. Long story short their support NEVER called me back even after they hung up on me basically and promised to get back to me first thing in the AM. Still to this day they have not called me. Then they had the nerve to send me a customer survey after the fact! AMAZING. So yes the drive works now but I WILL NEVER buy from these guys again after such a bad experience! I recommend not getting anything from these guys even if they are a huge company!

> 3 dayBasically I purchased this drive to make a backup of data on my original wd my book live duo which is running RAID. Basically the data on the drive is not data that needs to be updated on a regular basis, Its just videos, pictures and some music. The drive maybe connected for about a week or two to do a backup and then disconnected and put away in the event I need the backup. Once I copy all data to this drive I then verify the data by re-copying the files to a different location to make sure that I can get my data back. Ive had one of those wd my book live duo with RAID go bad and had to return the entire unit. After I received the replacement, I recopied the data from the usb drive that I kept in a safe place onto the replacement wd duo drive. The process of backing up and restoring my data went by pretty simple. Unfortunately the original USB drive (Seagate) died after four months and was sent back for repairs/replacement. I have no idea when Im going to get that replacement back! Anyway, Im using Windows 8.1 with a system with usb 3.0 ports, I had a problem connecting the drive cable to the actual drive. The connector on the drive arrived bent and I had to pry the connector on the drive a little wider so that the cable would fit in it. Before I give any speed info on the 4TB WD My Book USB 3.0 let me give you and idea of my system and network configuration first. Intel i7 3770 3.4GHz Intel DH77DF ITX Motherboard Crucial Ballistik 16Gb DDR3 PC3-12800 Memory Intel 335 SSD 240Gb Hard Drive 6Gbs Antec ITX Vesa-110 Case Windows 8 64bit Upgraded to Win 8.1 Onboard Intel Pro Gigabit Ethernet Cisco/Linksys E3200 a/b/g/n Gigabit WiFi Router Belkin 5-port Gigabit Switch Cat 6 Cables 3 - 4Tb My Book Live Duo Running In RAID (Gigabit Connection) 4 - WD Live Media Hub 1TB (Gigabit Connection) The info is based upon the speed shown under the Win 8.1 file copy details. The files are approx. 500mb up to 8Gb in size and everything is copied to and from the WD 4TB USB 3.0 external hard drive. (The test was done using 200Gb of the same video files for each test). I noticed the speed would drop a little as it started to copy the next file in the queue but it would regain full speed after a couple of seconds. Reading data to and from the 4tb wd usb 3.0 drive was basically the same for each port or internal drive tested. Here are the reading I got: Using Gigabit Ethernet to the WD 4tb connected to USB 2.0 Port Min - 24 MB/s Max - 38 MB/s Using Gigabit Ethernet to WD 4TB connected to USB 3.0 Port Min - 43 MB/s Max - 68 MB/s Using Internal SSD 6GBs Hard Drive to WD 4TB connected to USB 3.0 Port Min - 59 MB/s Max - 76 MB/s Basically reading and writing from the WD 4TB USB 3.0 gave me pretty much the same results. In my opinion; for an external drive it seems to transfer files pretty fast and Im able to move 2TB of video files over Ethernet to this external drive in approx. 7-Hours, Usually when I use a USB 2.0 port it takes almost 15 Hours. The only problem I found was the USB 3.0 port on the hard drive needed a small screw driver to force open the metal connector that was not allowing the cable to connect to the drive. This was a real bummer if youre not a DIY or careful type of person then chances are youll be returning the drive since one false move and the inside plastic connector of the USB female end on the drive could end up broken voiding the warranty. The next thing I found is that the drive may takes a couple of seconds to spin up from sleep mode which it seems to enter quite frequently, maybe some folks may or may not find this annoying. Some folks may say the are having trouble waking the drive as a share when it goes to sleep as a network drive but Ive not experienced this problem on mine so far. It may take a little while to respond from sleep mode but it does come up after a few annoying seconds later. I hope this helps you understand what youre getting if youre planning on purchasing one of these drives. In closing, Id say this is a pretty decent drive although it could be a bit cheaper on the price in regards to the Seagate central 4TB USB 3.0 but Ive already given up on the reliability of the Seagate drives to even consider them.

> 3 dayFantastic! Heavy duty, stands up well, perfectly flat base. Unobtrusive as it is slim (about 2 wide and about 8 high approx.)... Shiny, deep black, easy to clean off fingerprints... Software necessary to use the drive installs itself on your computer when you first plug it in ... There is no information included in the box whatsoever, other than the warranty information The WD Smartware Pro Automatic program is on the drive and can be found by clicking on the drive letter of the WD My Book after installation. It is under the file WD Apps Set Up. Easy to use... Will last a long time... Quiet and FAST too... EDIT: The WD Software Pro program can be installed using the WD APPS SET UP, found when you access the drive letter on your computer. I had a lot of trouble finding it, but it is in there. Requires power source as well as USB cord... I bought an extra long USB cord so I could tuck it away wherever I want... Plenty of heat vents on top... Strange that there are just as many on underside that are flat against whatever it sits on... Hasnt overheated however...

Greater than one weekNice product. Be sure you are familiar with setting up computers/software if you buy this. Step 3 on the box says install the backup software but there is none included in the package. Panic. Will I have to return it? No. You simply have to figure out where to find and download the appropriate software from the internet, and there are NO instructions on how to do this. Fortunately Ive worked with personal computers a LOT, have an engineering degree, and was able to read between the lines enough to get it all done. Once set up with the software installed, this is an excellent tool for backing up your operating system, pictures, files, etc. (basically everything on your computer). It also allows continuous file updates. Very intuitive, easy to use, and graphically informative after it is up and running. Plus it works with Dropbox for additional capability. It appears to be ideally suited for Windows 10. Now Im happy I bought it, AFTER getting over the temporary frustration of not knowing where to find the associated software, checking for prerequisite software, and updating the software after downloading. Voila! Just what I needed.

> 3 dayJust received this today and my only complaint is the packaging. Came in a box twice the size of the manufacturer box with nothing more than a couple air bags that did nothing to hold it in place in the box. Very happy with the actual product so far. Linked to my XBOX without issue and was formatted and ready to go in seconds. I am blown away by the speed at which my games transferred. These games took anywhere from 1-16 hours EACH to download through the XBOX, but my entire collection transferred to this drive in a little over an hour! Based on reviews I thought this unit was going to be bulky, but it is not at all. Actually only about half the size of my modem. Reviews also reported issues with loose power/USB connections, but mine are solid and sturdy. I also read a significant amount of reviews reporting that this drive crapped out on buyers within a few months of purchase, but i cannot speak to that since it is brand new to me. Works great so far, the price is amazing for the size, and it is also a very attractive piece of equipment that looks great sitting next to the XBOX. I will be sure to update if I have any issues, but for the moment this drive gets my recommendation.
