This was the projector Ive been waiting for . Got the Epson 8350 seven years ago, still works great. Replaced the bulb twice but now was the time to upgrade. It was very quiet located in the back of my movie room. Opened the HT3550 with much anticipation, mounted it on the ceiling but due to the limited throw rate, it had to be mounted right over my first row of theater chairs. I have a 92 screen. So disappointed with the loud fan noise overhead. Loved the excellent picture quality, especially the black level . Anyway thought I could live with the fan noise and went through normal setup but about one hour into the process the bulb shut down, projector turned off and the red TEMP or LAMP light came on. Called Benq tech support and was told that should not happen to a new HT3550. So I reluctantly returned the projector for a very quick exchange from Amazon. Thank you. Set up the second HT3550 and started watching movies. This time about two hours into the viewing, the bulb just turned off without the TEMP or LAMP light coming on. Green power light was still on. I let the projector cool down and when I turned it back on it worked fine. Watched two more movies that evening and everything went well. However, the next day, when I tried to turn on the projector, I could not get the HT3550 to turn on. Yes, the green light(s) were on so I knew I had power. Tried everything using the remote and the projector panel. Went through every troubleshooting suggestion I could find. Never could get the projector to turn on. Checked all wiring just to be sure. So I returned the replacement projector.

My friend and I have an expression when we see or hear something spectacular. Its, Hold it, Hold it, Hold it! Folks, this is about one of the best kept secrets in home theater or home entertainment! I dont think there are any words in the dictionary to express the picture quality and price of this unit! People, tbe Benq ht3550 is a True 4K unit. It does not Pixel Shift like other projectors are built to do to trick the eyes for 4k imaging. Benq calibrates this unit at the factory, colors and all to ISF (Imaging and Science Foundation) and cinematic standards the way the producers meant them to be seen. This unit ROCKS! and even has a longer lasting bulb than other units. It is about 1.30% larger in size of the Benq w1070. What sold me on the unit was the purchase of the Benq ht8050 I installed in my parents home in Colorado. We were watching the 4K version of The Lion King in a 120 screen and I fell out of my chair when I saw the immense clarity of the ht8050 that does not even have Dynamic Range. Its a huge unit and required blocking between the rafters to center it. The ht3550 I have is light in comparison and has Dynamic Range! Excellant, excellent unit and I highly recommend that people purchase this unit!!

I will put a lot more effort into this review as time goes on, however, it takes time to collect the data. The clarity is crisp as all hell and is beautiful. This is also me talking about this while projecting on a non-treated room wall. It will only get better from here. The brightness is great if its dim-lit or dark, but with daylight shining in, youll still want a tv over this. I moved mine to the corner of the room and still use it when the sun is glaring in.

This is my fourth projector in 10yrs. Recently had the Epson 5040UB and decided to go with Benqs HT3550 DLP 4K (1080 × 4), over Epsons new 5050UB claimed 4K which actually only displays 2k (1080 x 2) (read Epsons fine print). The HT3550 is also about half the price. The HT3550 is so much sharper than my old 5040UB, its like seeing 4k for the first time. Due to having light colored walls in my light controlled theater, I really dont see a noticeable difference in the claimed contrast between the two. This project is not advertised as a bright room projector and will not be suitable for that environment. With todays projectors in the sub $3000 range, theres a trade off of either having deep rich true theater like colors, or a super bright picture. I prefer I true to form picture in a light controlled room.

Pros Good picture quality and contrast. Good value at this price point. Cons Only for dark room experience even small bulbs can cause corners to brush and colours go fade. Quite bulky hence need professional service to do the mounting. Speakers are functional dint particularly like it. Would recommend only for those who wants to make serious home theatre setup in a dedicated dark room.

I purchased the BenQ HT3550 4K Home Theater Projector for this Christmas 2019, so far everything seems great in SDR format but when I use HDR the picture is a dark blue, everything is a shade of blue, I tried to make changes during but it doesn’t seem to change it much, setting different lamp brightness, picture modes and using the brightness/contrast as well as changing the Cinema settings pretty much have no effect, it remains blue… 12/27/2019 Currently I am awaiting a response from BenQ, and depending on the answer I will revise my rating, I wish I could give this 5 stars, I owned a previous BenQ projector (1080p) and it was fantastic! 12/29/2019 Update: Flashed to the newest firmware and reset all settings, I am happy to say the blue HDR has been corrected, and the picture is wonderful, but when disabling the pixel motion enhancer the fan is extremely loud with what sounds like an internal vibration noise. I will be returning this projector for another like unit in hopes that it was a defect or damaged in shipping...

This projector stopped working within the first week. Was able to return it and bought another projector instead.

Powers on. Orange light goes to green flashing. Then steady. Annnndddd..... nothing. No light, no engine, no sound. And.... No manual, just a quick start guide. So no clue as to whats happening. First projector experience. Did a lot of research. What a bust. Ill call them during work hours, but seems like i got a $1500 lemon out of the box. Unless the lamp takes hours to warm up. Days later - So they haven’t Sent a replacement and I’m 1400 out of pocket. The lemon shipped at a cost of $25 to me last week. I was told they wouldn’t wait to ship replacement

I love this projector, for the cost, what you get, its great. But also with the price point, you get absolute trash customer support and warranty through benq. I have sent this projector to them multiple times for random things. Had a Fan die, when it came back, the color wheel was having issues, when it came back the next time, I noticed there was a screw and broken pieces of plastic rolling around inside the projector, they had also broken one of the main case supports. So, I sent it back again....the next time I got it back, all seemed ok....until today....my lamp is at 973 hours....the first one lasted me 5700....and now my lamp is flickering and dying....Humm. so, I opened it up because I have a spare lamp, and I find out that some idiot has replaced my lamp mounting screws with some kind of standard computer fan screws! They drilled out the holes on the lamp but didnt bother drilling out the mounting holes on the projector itself! So every single new lamp I get, I have to modify to make it work! It doesnt even mount up properly, i have no idea how they have got away with this kind of customer support for so long but wow. I am floored. Worst support i have ever experienced in my life. As of now, I have sent them another less than pleasing email expressing my disdain and asking for my original mounting screws back.

I feel its important to note that one cannot fully disable motion smoothing on this device. Even with the setting changed to off there is some smoothing. Its especially bad with 2d animated films/TV, or anime where some elements on screen update at a framerate less than the video framerate. it looks awful. my suspicion is that device uses motion smoothing to add frames when there is a mismatch between video framerate and display refresh rate, instead of something like the more common 3:2 pulldown. in my opinion this was a bad move, as the artifacts from motion smoothing are far more noticeable than a flicker from simple frame pulldown. It can be mitigated, or fully eliminated, by setting the projector refresh rate to be equal to the video framerate, but this is not possible on many devices (e.g. chromecast), and it takes a good ~5 seconds or so for the projector to switch between refresh rates. additionally some video framerates may simply not be supported by the projector.
