I had a single 16GB stick and so I added another 8GB, same frequency and class but different sizes still works perfectly. You will have some degree of performance hit since when running dual-channel memory the smaller stick hits its cap first but it is not noticeable in day-to-day work, perhaps in synthetic benchmarks, though your mileage may vary. If you have a very low RAM, to begin with, like 8GB you wanna check your board limits. If you have less than 8GB you probably want to prioritize changing the computer entirely if possible.
