Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor, Black

Ordered a used Dell U2412 monitor from Discount-Computer and Im impressed. The packaging was top notch. The monitor was surrounded by plastic air bags sealed in a box and then within another box. It even arrived a little ahead of schedule. Ordered a grade B monitor. I was a little hesitant at first but figured Id take a chance. Im not disappointed. I was so happy with the purchase that I ordered a second one from the same vendor. No noticable imperfections when the screen is on. I use it for my home office PC. Imho the 16:10 aspect ratio should be the standard for all monitors.

It is unfortunate for those of us who use a computer for business purposes (I program) that the industry has decided that 1080 lines is enough. It is not. Finding a 1920x1280 monitor is getting hard these days. I finally had to retire my 6 year old Acer 1920x1280 monitor as the back-light finally kicked the bucket. I was skeptical about buying a Dell as they do make some low-end monitors that are really poor. I was pleasantly surprised by this monitor. It is crisp and clear and the colors are fine (for my non-photographer eyes). I do find that the monitor is rather bright and with a digital interface the whole experience a bit harsh. However when you start with extra crispness it is easy to dial back the sharpness setting, adjust the blues down 3-4% using the custom color setting, re-adjust your clear-type on Windows and tweak the contrast/brightness to get a pretty pleasing look. For me all monitors seem to look like crap out of of the box and need to be messed with. I am very picky about clarity of text since that is what I look at day in and day out and this monitor delivers. The ability to raise and lower and tilt is just so much better than my previous monitor and makes a big difference. Look this monitor is big and you want to have it pointed at the optimum angle towards your eyes. In my case I use it as the main monitor and my laptop screen is my secondary monitor so being able to adjust it lower on my desk and then angling it up made using the two screens together a bit smoother. I have not found the anti-glare coating to be too bad though it definitely adds a touch of graininess to the look. Probably a reasonable trade-off. The shiny laptop screen sitting next to this monitor that clearly reflects the trees out the window behind me reminds me that this coating is really effective. There is just no reflection at all in this monitor which is good.

This Dell monitor was purchased for a 13 macbook pro retina late 2013 (latest model as of this date) set-up. The retina screen on macbook pro is sharp, clear and easy to read. I wanted to an external monitor that was visually exciting like the thunderbolt apple display. However, I believe that the thunderbolt apple display is due for updating soon (hopefully thinner, lighter, with thunderbolt 2.0 connectivity and with USB 3.0 integrated) and did not want to purchase the current model at a whopping $999. This Dell U2412M seemed a reasonable compromise albeit smaller screen, but at much more reasonable price point. This Dell monitor was shipped very quickly from Amazon, and packaged sturdily. The set-up of the Dell monitor out of the box was easy. This display connects to the macbook pro with an mini-display port to DVI adapter (purchased separately) and by using the DVI cable supplied from Dell. I decided to just get a mini-display port to display port cable from Amazon instead. This cable cannot be found ANYWHERE in the local stores and only from Amazon. So please be aware to purchase the cable with the Dell monitor. As Im sure everyone knows--this Dell monitor does not have a HDMI connection. This monitor does not have speakers either. So what do I think of the display? I admit my initial reaction was disappointment. Only because I compared it to my macbook pro retina screen or an apple thunderbolt display at the store. In my opinion, the apple displays are superior. There is no comparison. Dont get me wrong--the Dell visual display is beautiful, but I have been spoiled by the apple displays. I am now more sensitive to noticing the pixels on the Dell. I placed the display on its maximum resolution too at 1920 X 1200. The Dell display is matte and not glossy, which is fine. I believe that if one looks at the Dell screen for a long time, it will tire the eyes. The glare can be quite prominent even at brightness down to 27%. I could not find a Dell U2412M at a local store for me to gauge first and I bought this monitor based on reviews. For what it is worth, this monitor is more than decent and will work for me now. The price point is most excellent for the quality. However, I need to read and write constantly for work. Hence, in service of minimizing eye strain, I may take the leap to the new thunderbolt display when apple upgrades that monitor.

We have been exceedingly impressed with the U2412M monitor thus far. Without rehashing (too much) what other reviews have said, heres what we like: 1) Aspect ratio: the screen size is perfect for working with documents, excel files, email and presentations. Yes a smaller screen will do the job but the extra vertical resolution is nice to have. 2) Highly adjustable: Dell UltraSharp panels have always been great in this regard, and this monitor is no exception. We love that the swivel (both left to right and horizontal to vertical) is effortless, and that its easy to adjust the vertical height and pitch of the monitor to help you achieve the best ergonomic viewing angle. This has really helped to reduce neck strain for both of us who use this monitor. 3) Great colors and image clarity: Im sure there are professional photographers and others who need nothing but the highest levels of color accuracy, but for normal office/web/photo use this monitor produces crisp, clear, pleasing images which are more than good enough for us. 4) USB side ports: USB ports on the bottom and side of the monitor have been a feature on various Dell monitors over the years. While this feature is easy to overlook, the convenience of being able to quickly access USB ports to pop in and out a flash drive has become a luxury that I dont want to live without. No more having to reach behind the PC, or twisting to reach strangely angled ports that manufactures put on their computers for some reason. Its also great if you keep your CPU on the floor and dont want to have to get down on your knees just to plug in a USB device. As always, Amazon customer service is great. The first display we received had a dead (dark) pixel. Amazon quickly shipped out a replacement and the new one was perfect. I highly recommend thoroughly checking out the pixels right after you receive it. There are helpful test patterns that you can play on YouTube and similar sites that make dead and stuck pixels easier to spot.

This review is for the Dell 24 inch Monitor model number U2412 My trusty decade old Dell

The original ordered arrived and the Amazon shipping box was in great shape but the Dell Monitor box was beat up pretty bad so I returned it without opening it. The replacement came yesterday (11/18/22) and NO Amazon box, it arrived in the Dell box itself and it looked in good condition. I replaced my 19 inch and all is good. I had one install issue with had nothing to do with the monitor or Amaazon. I had to uninstall the Display Adapter in Window 10 to remove the old 19 inch monitor in the device manager. I would have thought Windows would have just recognized the new monitor but it didn’t therefore I couldn’t adjust to highest resolution nor remove the old monitor in the Device Manager. After I removed the Display Adapter the monitor then showed up in the Device Manager as Generic PnP so at that point I was able to install the Dell U2412M Monitor Driver from the Dell website. This monitor is much better for my eyes and is crystal clear. If it holds up I’ll be very happy with the new monitor.

My first criterion when I was looking for a 24 monitor was screen resolution: I wanted 1920x1200. I know that its not completely rational; 24 1080p monitors (1920x1080) can be found for half the price, but I needed those 120 rows of pixels. This is partly because I will probably end up placing this in a dual-monitor setup next to a 20 4:3 monitor (1600x1200) and I like the vertical resolution to match. Well, whatever my reasons, I was set on 1200 vertical resolution, and given that restriction this was clearly the best deal to be found. Ive found nothing negative to report about it, only pros. 1) nice physical presence, with a fairly small bezel, not too modern-looking, unobtrusive. It has good smooth height adjustment, looks like about 5-1/2 inches of motion. Of note, it can adjust all the way down until the lower edge of the monitor is resting on the base, something that my other monitors have not done. 2) really, really good buttons and on-screen controls. There are 4 unlabeled buttons on the right side. At first I was concerned that I would have to memorize what each one does, but thats not the case. You hit any of the four to bring up a menu, and the on screen controls always clearly show what each button does. This shouldnt be such a big deal, because you dont spend much time in these menus, but it just makes me happy, and gives me confidence in the rest of the monitor. Note: I dont see a dedicated input source button, so folks who use the monitor switching inputs as a sort of KVM will have to go a couple layers into a menu to switch inputs, but this doesnt impact me at all. 3) display. The display is flawless to my eyes. I havent spent time tinkering with the color management options because the defaults look good to me, but there is a lot of configuration available, along with presets for movie, gaming, text, color temp settings, etc. Im able to make the display nice and dim, much dimmer than other monitors that I use. I use it for standard email, web browsing, streaming video, and gaming. For these tasks its perfect. Ive had no problems with ghosting or response times in games, its just a beautiful clear experience. I recommend it highly, although as I said if youre willing to give up those 120 rows of pixels, a 1080p monitor can be had for a lot less money.

I have been using the monitor for only a week, so I can say nothing about reliability. It is labeled with a manufacture date of November 2012. The colors are very nice, perhaps a bit better than my older LCD monitors, but nothing spectacular like others have reported. The 1920x1200 format is very nice for CAD (computer aided design) work. There is no problem with the antiglare coating, as others have reported. It has a smooth flat appearance just like my two older Samsung monitors. I work mostly with white backgrounds (CAD and word processing) and I see none of the glittery effect reported in earlier posts. I have noticed no stuck pixels or the backlight bleed that others have reported. Perhaps these were initial production problems. I see no blurring, streaking or other artifacts when playing DVD movies or with action games like Flight Simulator X (running with all options maximized, 30 frames per second and 1920x1200 pixels). Other comments about the 8 ms refresh causing blurring are pretty silly, since our nervous system cant distinguish events shorter than about 20-30 ms. It is connected to an Nvidia Quadro 2000 video card through a DisplayPort cable. Pros: Easy setup. Windows 7 found it and automatically installed a U2412M driver. Height, angle and rotation adjustments are easy. Cons: It doesnt include a DisplayPort (DP) cable. It has black buttons on a black bezel (if there are labels, they are black too). They are essentially invisible under normal room lighting. I know this is the current silly fad, but it is just stupid! When I first turned it on it reported that there was no VGA cable connected and that it would shut down in five minutes. This was silly since it was connected with a DisplayPort cable. I pushed on the buttons (not sure which one because it is black on black) and eventually an input selection menu appeared. When I selected the DisplayPort input it switched and has worked correctly ever since. This should have been unnecessary - with only one cable connected it should have auto detected the signal. A minor annoyance is the way the power, video and USB cables attach on the rear of the display panel. When you rotate the display the cables are dragged with it and may hang on nearby objects. It would have been much better to attach the cables to the base and make the connections to the display internally at the rotation point. The display has two USB ports on the left edge. If used these cables stick out several inches making it necessary to have a lot of clearance. These ports cant be used in a multi monitor system with another monitor sitting next to the U2412M (or anything else close by). Also, if the monitor is rotated these cables are dragged to the top of the display high above the desk top. The side of the display isnt a good location for cable connections. Other comments: This is not a problem with the monitor, but when I installed it Microsoft Office had to be activated a second time. Just for changing monitors on the machine! Thats nuts! I dont know if Microsoft does this for all monitors. I knocked off a star because of the black on black buttons without labels and the failure to auto detect the signal. Otherwise it is very nice.

I purchased two of these. One of them had a stuck pixel cluster and a pea sized bright spot near the center of the screen. I returned that one and the replacement arrived with two dark pixel clusters. On any background but a black background the dark pixel clusters look like the monitor is dirty or has a smudge....tried to clean the screen multiple times but the dark spots are still there. Evidently Dell doesnt consider it an issue unless you have 6 or more of these spots but an ultrasharp monitor should be better than this. I can understand one bad monitor but now the replacement has issues too. Very annoying. The 2nd of the first two I purchased doesnt have any issues. Other than the pixel cluster issue the colors are great and the monitors perform as expected. UPDATE: After more research the dark spots on the replacement monitor are actually smudges/fingerprints/dust etc. between the layers of the monitor. That is why it looks like a smudge but you cant clean it. It is behind the top layer. This has to be a quality control issue during assembly. Pros: Great color and excellent picture Cons: Quality control issues/stuck pixels/smudges between layers My Settings: I have used both the standard and color temp control. My favorite settings are the color temp mode set to 5700K, brightness at 35 and contrast at 75. I have also used the same brightness and contrast with the standard preset mode and like that too. The brightness comes set at 75 which is way too high in my opinion. Great color reproduction and no eye strain with these settings. I did find the 6500K color temp setting too red for some colors and that is why I settled on the 5700K.

Pros: - Viewing angle: Much better than a TN monitor: This is very important for monitors that are 24+ inches as all TNs look significantly darker at the top even when sitting right in front of them. This is very noticeable in dark areas of movies and games. All IPS variation monitors address this problem well. The Dell u2412m seems to not have quite as good a range as other IPS monitors, but it doesnt really matter if youre sitting right in front of it. - Sturdy base: Rock solid. Does not wiggle when typing or even shaking a less-than-sturdy desk. - Color reproduction: The range of colors is very good, minus blacks, once properly calibrated with a spectrometer. There might be a tad bit extra hint of blue, but nothing terrible. - No dead pixels: I absolutely hate dead pixels. It is a very common issue. Luckily, this monitor did not have a single one. Cons: - Factory Default settings: Out-of-the-box, the colors are waaaaaaaay off. Like you took a translucent blue paint brush to your monitor. Using Windows 7s monitor calibration tool is not sufficient, you will need either a really good third-party program such as EzTune or, for better accuracy, a monitor spectrometer such as the Xrite ColorMunki. - Blacks are poor: This is to be expected of an IPS monitor. I was unable to calibrate my monitor to distinguish between 96-100% blacks. - Anti-glare coating: Oh god. Where to begin? When I first turned my monitor on, the first thing that popped into mind was Wow, this monitor is really dusty. How did this happen? Upon turning my monitor off, and taking a better look at it, there wasnt any dust on it at all. I then turned it back on and looked closer. It was the Anti-glare coating that was applied to it, reflecting light produced from the monitor into the wrong directions and producing what looks like small, dull, red and green specs. I then began to speculate. Maybe they just used way too much anti-glare coating on my monitor? After-all, it received so many positive reviews on Amazon. Well, after looking around at other websites for reviews, it turns out that it is a very common complaint about this monitor. The dusty-looking screen is very distracting. Like looking through a window that had collected dust for a few years. Solid colors do not look like solid colors, bright colors look murky, and no matter what you do, you cant get over looking past the dirty screen. The Anti-glare coating itself is not very effective. I have a window to the side and it seems to somehow reflect some of the light back at me in a dull satin shine. For reference, my old monitor has a very glossy mirror-like finish and there is no glare at all on it. If the window was behind me, however, it would be a very different story. I really wanted to like this monitor. I really did. But the anti-glare coating is such an eye sore. This is unacceptable for me in a monitor. I have an old Gateway FHD2400. It was a TN medium-low-end monitor for its time, and it has a better picture than the Dell u2412m due to everything looking so clean. The only thing I liked better about the Dell is that it has a better viewing angle. Needless to say, I sent the monitor back. Out of the hundreds of purchases I have made on Amazon, 95% of them being technology related, this is the only item I have ever sent back for a refund. I had high expectations of the Dell u2412m, but was very disappointed in the end. I would like to see Dell cease use of the useless anti-glare on this otherwise nice monitor.
