Its self-locking with a simple thumb release, and so far, the self-locking feature works very well. Ive had other tapes with this feature and after a bit of use, the tape starts to creep back in before you release it.

There is a lanyard loop which is convenient but no lanyard is included. Plastic construction is went I recommended for personal use and not commercial. Build quality won’t be the most durable.
