This device works well.....but required yet another app for it to work. It wasnt difficult, just time consuming. Perhaps theyre all like that. This was my first time using an Alexa plug.

Reason for Kasa Smart Plugs I needed a solution for a traditional timer clock that failed. As I had already bought into the Kasa brand/ecosystem (Ive known and found TP-Link to be a good brand for many years) with a monitoring camera, I decided Id stick with Kasa and find a smart plug option. The main driver being the desire to avoid yet another phone app and have something smart. These cost only a tiny bit more than a traditional timer clock. Setup/Connection Is Simple - Use the App These small smart plugs are pretty easy to setup and the app completely walks you through the process. If you have a Guest home WiFi network and put these onto it you may have to juggle a bit. The device on which you run the app to setup will need to connect to the same network/SSID as you put the devices on. In my case that meant manually ensuring the phone I was using for setup connecting to my guest network temporarily, given its setup to connect by default to my may home network. Recommendation: Setup a guest network if you dont have one to keep the smart devices isolated from your computers and phones and more important stuff on your home network. That way if a smart device, camera or whatever gets hacked, they are not on your network where you have your computers and smart phones and anything else like NAS storage. Somewhat protected. Scheduling Events - Initially Confused but Powerful Options Once setup was complete I did confuse myself setting up a schedule in the app. I expected the schedule to include both an on and off time in a single scheduled event - thats not how it works. You create a schedule for individual on and off events. I did really like the option to use sunrise or sunset as an event time. Given I am using these for lamps having an on setting for say 20 mins before sunset, allows for energy efficiency as the smart plugs adjust for the sunset time each day this changes. In my case then, lamps come on when needed, based on the sunset time, and not at some fixed time. Overall Good value and easy to setup and use. I bought 2 more! This way I have 3 less things to change for DST and they turn on lamps when it gets dark based on the ever adjusting sunset time.

I started with Belkin/Wemo years ago and although I loved the convenience, they got flaky and cost me more minutes configuring than I ever saved from their automation. The last straw was setting up my Christmas lights this year. I had one controlling outside lights and connected it to Alexa. The other day the Wemo app said it was no longer connected but oddly Alexa had no trouble turning it on and off. I reset this switch but couldnt get it to show up in the Wemo iOS app. It struggled through the blinking light phase and finally connected, let me name it and when done, it simply didnt show up. I had a box of 4 Kasa switches that I bought on sale but hadnt opened yet and decided it was time to swap out my Wemos. I had 2 Kasa switches installed, working and connected to Alexa in less than 5 minutes. Ok maybe 6 minutes. Straight forward piece of cake. Wemo switches seemed to have started out working that way in the beginning. Im not sure if they where effected by a firmware update but once they get wonky it becomes a lot of web searches and troubleshooting that eats up time and sometimes leads nowhere. The Kasa iOS app looks well done and their web site is clean with good information.

I purchased these to replace Wemo smart switches. They respond much better through Alexa than the Wemos ever did. Glad I purchased them, will purchase these when the need comes up again

Unfortunately there is something wrong with my smart plug. It is not connecting to my lamp. However, the customer support is great. Hanson Chan was very kind, courteous, very professional, respectable, and very knowledgeable about the product. He always checked in on me if there were very long pauses and was extremely polite. The configuration process took about an hour via phone conversation… But Hanson still made his best effort to check in on me and help provide a replacement.

The product worked great for a wide variety of audiences. It integrates with Google Home/Assistant nicely, in addition to the native Kasa app. Theres also a pretty active community supporting the development of 3rd party integrations such as python and command line interfaces. After 8 months or so, one of my plug started to malfunction and couldnt be turned off. Despite the 1-year warranty claim, TP-Link actually asked the customer to pay of the cost of shipping the defective product back to them. That makes very little sense and basically renders the warranty claim useless. Update: After contacting customer support, I was offered a free shipping label.
