This particular set is challenging, unique and different in that it is interactive with an app which is good and bad. The great thing about Legos is it gets the kids away from electronics, now they mesh the two. It is unique and the grandkids love it but not sure about the app. Its inevitable I guess.

We are train and LEGO fans so this Ghost Train Express building set is a good fit. In addition to the basic components these Hidden Side sets include an optional augmented reality game app although an android or iOS tablet or smartphone is required to utilize that feature. After loading the app, point the device at the completed structure and move it around for an interactive experience. The Hidden Side app includes games, mysteries and ghost hunting/capturing. Future updates are mentioned which should help maintain interest. Check device compatibility on the website—checkdevice. And, it is probably obvious but to avoid confusion, the train is not motorized and use of the app is optional. This haunted train and station set is large, 5 inches wide, 5 inches tall and 24 inches long, and at 698 pieces it is reasonably challenging. The train tracks are the uniform size used in other LEGO building sets so they can be incorporated into other projects. Included are 5 minifigures and there are movable features on the train, like the pop-out ghost wings, a cannon to help eradicate the ghosts, etc. As always, the pieces fit together well which is not the case with some other brands. The illustrated instruction guide provides solid guidance and the finished project is visually impressive. The set is designed for ages 8 and above so younger builders may need older sibling or adult assistance during construction. Build time will vary based on experience and whether done over a couple of days or in a single sitting. Suitably creepy without being frightening. Excellent.

12 year old put it together alone in 2 days. Had to find a device that the app would work on, but child thought it was neat. Caught ghosts on first try. Fun legos

This Lego set is perfect for Harry Potter fans of any age. Whether theyre young enough to want to put it together, play with it, and then change it up, or they want to just put it together and display, its going to make them happy. It does have a lot of pieces, but my younger ones (7-8 yrs) can put it together without assistance. I would say younger, preschool-age kids would have some trouble doing it by themselves. The only drawback to this set is it only comes with enough track for the train to sit on. If you want it to actually move, youre going to need more track. I havent tried it, but Im told that the train will run on other tracks in the Lego world. Other than the lack of track, this set is everything I expect from Lego, and with my crew, we have seen a lot of those toys. The price is comparable to most Lego sets, maybe a bit pricier due to the theme, but if youre a Lego fan, you already know about the value.

Very fun train to build. Comes with everything including great easy to understand instructions.I would expect nothing less from LEGO. The nice twist to this is the app to bring this thing to life. I do not want to spoil anything, but the augmented reality is a very nice/different touch. You can play with the set without the app so dont let that stop you from getting this nice train set. Any LEGO love would have a great time with this.

The Lego 70424 hidden side ghost train express building kit, is comprised of 698 components made in Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, China, the Czech Republic, and the USA. In addition to building the ghost train, an app is used to add interactive play using augmented reality. This kit is built in 5 steps detailed in the included instruction book. Each step comes with a set of numbered bags containing the parts needed. While this kit can be built by a single person, it is far more fun to get a buddy to join in. My boyfriend’s niece helped me build this kit, where she built certain parts and more often found the parts for me to assemble. This build took place in one afternoon and was greatly enhanced by friendly chatter, joking around, and much laughter. The 5 steps were mostly broken down to building the station, the back portion of the engine, completing the engine, the science car, and the container cart. The wings of the engine are set to swing out with the flip of a switch, while the mouth opens by twisting a lever. The station also has moving parts to change from normal to scary. The app takes longer than normal to download and install. Getting started wasn’t difficult though. I opened the app and followed instructions. The most challenging part was when I had to line up the train with the outline for the app to recognize it. The table was lit with the light source behind the train, and the app didn’t recognize the train until a flash of light occurred. From there I could choose to be a hunter or ghost and play the game. Once game play is complete, I could spend points on things like upgrades and capsules. The game is fun and has several skill levels. This lego set was quite interesting - ghost train with various characters and comes with a app that you could install on your mobile device - that could give it a pokemon like augmented reality fun twist. I have seen my daughter and her friends have lot of fun looking at the set from the ipad camera and role playing and giggling and having a blast. Theres intricate details in the train, as well as characters, but the app really puts in more flavor the overall experience of the set. Good innovation by Lego to keep up with the times.

I love skill building toys that require hands on concentration and patience. Also, the child feels in control and that is important for a youngsters confidence building in my opinion. This set has great craftsmanship and wonderful colors. You can download the app on your smartphone for more interactive play and that is a blast for adults or children. It makes it more realistic and exciting. Capture the animated ghosts on your phone! Figures are pretty sturdy and tracks are easy to put together. The technology part of this set will help inspire the imagination and keep the game interesting for years. It’s not a set they’ll grow bored with.
