Philips has been nagging me for a while to upgrade the app on my phone, and -- while youre at it -- get our new super duper hub, it is square. Well, with Samsung jacking everyone over on SmartThings, I figured I would go on and upgrade the Hue too. First, install the new hub. It is square. That is a big deal for some reason. The new hub is super-light, small piece of plastic. It will not stay put. The ethernet cable moves it. And, speaking of the ethernet cable, I was hoping I could remove the old hub and set the new hub in the same place. But NO!. Philips decided to 1) change the power connecter, and 2) rotate the ethernet connection, so I had to pull out the furniture, get behind where the old hub was, install the now power adapter, and twist the ethernet cable over. That was a chore. That cable had a little bit of tension in it, and the no-weight plastic hub promptly flipped over, putting the cable back to the position it was in with the old hub. Disconnect it, loosen up the cable, try again. OK, all that is working. Blue lights all on. To my great dismay, after installing the new app and the new hub, NO LIGHTS FOUND. Yep, first I thought I must have done something wrong (possible, even though Ive installed this and similar systems, but you never know). After checking and rechecking, I installed one of the new bulbs that came with the hub. Presto, 1 bulb in my house found and working. What about the rest? More checking. I power on every light in the house. Still no devices found. I try changing ZigBee channels. No go. Checking the Internet, Google the Oracle, and I found the Great Disappointment. The new hub does not talk easily to the old lights. Philips suggests going to each and every single light to find its serial number and typing in each of those serial numbers to help the poor new super-duper square hub find the legacy hue lights. What a waste of time and horrible design. If you are not totally invested in Hue, go to Panasonic. No hub required. Save yourself the headache and the failed designs of Philips. PHILIPS: you really screwed the pooch on this upgrade you forced out on everyone. Your inattention to design details is deplorable. Your near-complete lack of support for legacy bulbs is unacceptable. You could have done so much better.

I thought the hub was DOA because I couldnt get it working on my router. The app would find the hub, but not connect in the next step. I tried android and IOS to no avail. I turned off all features, filters and firewalls, but nothing worked. I happen to have a backup Netgear router that I tried as a last ditch effort. Works great with the Netgear router. App found the hub and was able to get everything working... After the updates, I tried switching back, but it didnt work with updates either, so back to the older router. -1 star for compatibility -1 star for having to physically plug it into the router in 2020

Package delivered to me was missing two essential components: the power cord and the Ethernet cable! Totally useless to have three (intact bulbs) and a hub that cannot be connected! Most disatisfied! Returning.

I like that you can change colors. However, they are not bright enough. Also, after a year, one of the bulbs stopped changing colors and now the two bedroom lamps are not the same color. Not sure how to replace the defective one since I bought them from Amazon and not Phillips.

Love this set. I have placed them in different rooms and now have even set up my routines for each room. The lights come on when I am gone, for peace of mind. The app for my phone is also extremely intuitive and easy to use.

This is our second set of smart light bulbs and first one from Philips Hue. We have iPhones and iPads almost everywhere in the house (an iPad for each one and an iPhone for each adult) so we dont need to invest in extra voice control devices ( the idea of buying an Echo for each room sounds awful, though currently we have one in the kids room and I like it). Before having this Hue Starter Kit, as most people considering their 1st smart light bulbs, I didnt understand either why a hub (or bridge) is required while some light bulbs say they dont need to. So I purchase my first set of smart light bulbs from another brand, without a hub and claiming it supported Siri. But it didnt have a HomeKit code so it was just a fake ad. As a tech guy (installed all kinds of hardware and software in data center for years and also a developer) it took me more than a couple of hours to try all 3 paring methods to make it work with Alexa, and it was super annoying and felt unsafe to be asked to share my location all the time, not to mention I also had to input my complicated wifi passcode several times for a single try. The Philips Hue Hub, originally just for Siri control, tuned out a big surprise. It made it super easy to setup, almost worked out of box. All you need to do is to read a few lines of instruction, plug in two cords (power and network cable) and scan HomeKit code from your iPhone. The only difficult part for me was to find where the HomeKit code was among a mass of words and numbers on the hubs body. But that was all. Before purchasing, I was worried about the light bulbs in this starter kit were previous version and not white ambience as a couple of reviews pointed out. When they lighted up I found 2700k color was perfectly for me, both in living room and bedroom. Plus the watts is even slightly bigger than the current version which has a flat top and bluetooth. I even prefer this version over the bluetooth version if next time I need more bulbs because of the brightness. What a great deal that you get the hub and the lovely bulbs for just a bit more than 60 dollars. Highly recommend it especially if you want to utilize Siri you already have and dont want to waste your intelligence on figuring out how to connect a single bulb to your wifi for multiple bulbs.

I got the hue system as a gift for an elderly relative who had a vivant home alarm that included Alexa. The hue integrates with the Alexa and vivant so he can now control key lights much easier and with less risk of falling.
