I originally bought this due to the fact that my daughter wanted to learn keyboards. After a little research I determined that the Rock Band 3 keytar was usable as a MIDI controller, and that actual game interface did not matter, so I bought the cheapest one. Due to some driver issues, if you try to use the wireless interface to a PC, it will LAG very badly. And while it might be usable if all your doing is using it to enter sequences, your much better getting a MIDI to USB cable. Which I did and now it works right.

Playing with the keyboard in pro is really challenging, I wanted to be able to play using most of the keys because it represents an experience close to the real deal, and this controller offers just that. The controller responds well and so far the only downside is that there is only one game available for using with, so I hope there are more on the way.

I dont use this for Rock Band but rather use it as a very inexpensive MIDI controller for my portable MIDI-enabled equipment. Ive been moving away from computers lately and back to hardware instruments. I recently purchased a Korg Volca Keys and while playing it with the ribbon keyboard is fun, Im much more dextrous on a keyboard. I wanted something that was battery powered and had the standard 5 pin DIN MIDI port as well. Having seen reviews for this controller on various synth forums I purchased this and it works great. The keys play well though the layout of some of the controls arent always easy to get to. You can use the ribbon controller for pitch bend but you have to hold down a button on the side of the ribbon to activate it, which seems counter-intuitive. Perhaps the button helps to extend battery life but I find it awkward to use. Given the price, its still a phenomenal bargain.

Like the title says, this definitely freshens up the genre. After having this keyboard for awhile now I have to say its definitely worth it. It definitely takes getting used to if your a previous keyboard/piano player because of the way the notes are displayed. The notes scroll down the highway in the same fashion they do with the other instruments, so if youre accustomed to sheet music this will be a bit off-putting. However I play piano myself and after some time of playing through this I have gotten used to the notes and am playing on pro keys quite easily. I find myself almost being lost in the music much as I did on the guitar and drums. It becomes so much fun at points you forget its a game and get that feeling of actually playing the music. Now all I need is the new pro guitar and ill be set. I definitely recommend this keyboard for a bit more of variety to the Rock Band formula, just know that if you already play piano it can take some time to get used to.

This makes a great midi controller for a home studio. Just the right size to fit between the computer and its keyboard, it does all the midi functions I need. Sometimes 25 keys right in front of me beats 61 or 88 across the room.

Great device. The kids have loved playing it. Easy to sync.

I pre-ordered this, and was really excited for it, but after a night of playing, Im less than thrilled. If you want to play it like a keyboard rather than sling it over your shoulder like a keytar, its hard to find a surface to play it that wont make your hand hurt after a couple of songs. (Maybe the Mad Catz stand would help? I wanted to try the keyboard out before deciding whether to get the stand, and based on my experience so far, I doubt I will be playing it enough to make the stand worthwhile.) There were no real instructions that I could find, in-game or in the accompanying documentation. It didnt take long to figure out through trial and error, but failing the first few bars of a song while you figure out what buttons do what is not a great user experience. The interface is not very intuitive (like the rest of the over-shell in RB3), and some basic I see youve plugged in a keyboard for the first time. Do you want a quick tutorial? in-game would have been very welcome. I play a little piano, so I expected to have a head start on pro mode. To some extent that was true, in terms of knowing my way around the keyboard without having to look at my fingers, but the way the notes are represented in pro mode was really frustrating. Theres an on-screen track for every single note, and I found it really difficult to tell which notes it wanted me to play. If RB3 had an option to switch to standard sheet music, I would have taken it-- had I spent the same amount of time at my piano with the sheet music to Imagine as I spent trying to figure out which notes Rock Band wanted me to hit in that stupid bridge, I would be able to play the song from memory today. The regular non-pro mode seemed a little silly: since you must play it one-handed, it does not have the same level of involvement as guitar, bass or drums. I went through three of the pro-keyboard lessons, but the software kept glitching to the point that it was unplayable and I had to reset the console. Not impressed. And, although you couldnt call it a surprise, if you have imported your RB2 tracks or have a lot of DLC, there are just not that many songs that have keyboard parts to play to begin with. On tracks without a keyboard part, it gives you the option of playing guitar or bass parts on the keys, which I tried, but found that I would rather be playing the guitar part on the guitar. In short, I am not really eager to rush home to a second night with that keyboard-- which is a shame, because Id been counting down the days until it was delivered. Oh well. I still love my drums best!
