> 3 dayI started off with Crystal scanners. I left off years ago at triple trunking. This scanner is awesome. Yes there is some learning curves, however Im up and running and less than one minute. Im able to get my surrounding channels I need. Set the range turn up the squelch, Im good. I will continue to update as I go along, but so far all good. Well not the fact that I got to upgrade and pay for it.,,,DMR, not that important to me. However, to others it is a big deal. The fact that it is Wi-Fi and there is an app that does work is awesome. It works. I love it. I still got to figure out how to get connection from the outside. I was going to forward the ports, but could not type in the colon at the beginning of the app you know, the IP address colon the number Port you assigned it to. Ill figure it out. Dont want to stick it out there in a DMZ.

> 3 dayIt is hard to program but all it takes is time. Only used it for a few days but I needed the digital. As always it’s quite expensive for an amateur.

> 3 daySound quality is not great for conventional channels, but that’s just minor. This scanner is very complex at first, but after a day or two it’s really simple. I suggest using the Sentinel software to create a favorites list because the scan speed on a digital system is slower than conventional. I don’t suggest using the “zip” feature. Use the software and create a favorites list, and monitor that list.

> 3 dayThe BCD536HP is a one of the best radio scanners. The sound is great, easy to manually program frequencies, and the sentinel software is nice but takes a while to learn. It works just like my BCD436HP but larger display and larger keys to add frequencies. zip code programming is great. I had it scanning frequencies in less than 10 minutes. I would sure buy it again if I did not have one. I plugged it into my cigar lighter in my truck and it worked great.

> 3 dayIve bought just about every new scanner thats been available over the last few years and this is a go-to unit. If you know your way around the software/programming and new digital technology these days youll probably love this thing. It can also be fairly easy to use as a beginner or someone who doesnt care to get too involved. Lots of options available to upgrade the firmware as well. It has good audio and decode quality and receives very well. Many useful features and ways to custom program.

> 3 dayTo put it bluntly, if you havent taken a college course in how to program a high end scanner, dont buy this one, and as for its preprogramming of channels feature that all you do is enter your zip code, ya, itll scan every state around you and thousands of channels you dont want, and you cant use the range function either when using the scanner set up to scan using a zip code. That only works on channels you have manually entered, and you cant lock channels out either using the preprogramming function. So unless you have the time and knowledge of some very complex, very in depth scanner functions, youre going to be left wondering where the nearest place is you can take a course on how to program the thing, or figure on buying something not so complex, because Ive had 4 scanners prior to this one and was able to find my way around them, but this thing was just too much. The menus and functions keep going on like some infinite journey into the abyss. It has functions I had no idea what they even were, and didnt want to spend the next six months googling it and fiddling around with it just to program it to scan the channels I wanted and not a few thousand I didnt, and I mean thousands. When using the zip code programming, it will scan thousands of channels in your state and the states surrounding you, and theres no way to tell it not to scan all those channels while using in that manner. You cant lock them out and you cant use the range function either, its unreal, and I wonder why not when evidently itll do everything else including wipe your nose. Is it a well made scanner? Yes. Is it high end? Ya, and probably the most complicated scanner on the planet. I guess if this is your hobby and youve been into it your entire life and you want the absolute best, buy this scanner. If you live in a rural area and just want a scanner to scan maybe 10 to say 30 local channels, you dont need this one. Theres plenty of other scanners that have trunking and digital that arent a fraction as complicated as this thing. I returned it. So why did I buy it you may ask... well, I thought Id buy a scanner that I wouldnt have to upgrade for a good long while. What I didnt plan on was buying something so complicated that I couldnt properly program it. Thats my story and Im sticking to it.

> 3 dayJuly 23 update: After reading several posts at the radio reference website, I have found out why the unit is always asking to set the date and time. It seems that it has an internal battery for just this and it must be shipped dead from the factory. To charge it, you must leave the scanner on for several days. The magic number of days posted there seems to be three. So, turn on the scanner, and leave it only for several days in a row. The battery only charges while the unit is actually on. A constant power supply to the radio, while it is turned off will not charge the battery. Once I did this, the constant nagging for me to set the date and time has finally gone away. I will be adding back one of the removed stars as this is a great scanner but I am holding back one because UNIDEN should have made this CLEAR in the manual on the setting up section. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ July 2014 update: Now this scanner is asking me to set the date and time every time I turn it on!!!!!! Uniden, fix this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because of this, Im removing two stars! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ And now, I really like it. Like all Uniden scanners, documentation is to be desired. It is/was written for those that have been aboard with Uniden from the get-go. Im sure they get it! But, if you are not an aged veteran of Uniden, then you are not alone and the manual that comes with it is of little help. With that said, this unit does offer help for the novice. LIKE ME! The sentinel software really helps, but it also ASSuMEs a lot. Do as I did; take a day off, sleep good and then try it again with an open mind. With this, you can figure out how to make your scanner work best for you. yes, it uses stupid words like append for what most would call add and other stupid Chinese to English translation errors. The feature I like most is the simulcast. I can now listen to all the local police cars as they broadcast. With my old scanner, this was not there. The reason I got this new scanner was that I often saw police and emergency vehicles zoom by my home with no chatter at all on my old digital scanner. Now, when I see them, I actually listen to them and know exactly where and why they are in a hurry.

> 3 dayThis is the 1st scanner I have had in several years and the advancements are outstanding. Once I figured out how to use the software for programming, I simply set up a favorite with only the agencies that I wanted to listen to. I pick up all the surrounding counties, State Police, DOT, Game & Fish, EMS. It is pricey, but well worth the money for anyone that likes to keep up with what is going on with first responders.
