I bought this to replace the external hard drive connected to my dish hopper 3 after it died. Since Dish says that you have to use an externally powered usb 2.0 drive this drive checked all the boxes since it is usb 3.0 backwards compatible with 2.0 and uses its own power supply. When I connected it to my hopper a message popped up asking if I wanted to reformat the drive. I clicked yes and it did its thing. One thing to remember is that when its done it wont show up in your menu until you restart your hopper and then it will show up as an available external hard drive. I cant comment on tech support since I didnt need any or portability since its just going to sit on a shelf. I would definitely recommend this Elements drive if you want increased storage for your Dish hopper

Mine was good. the 2 5TB HDDs bought prior to this did not last the 90 days. with the recent lawsuit for selling HDDs to China after told to stop will be raising prices on future drives because consumers are ALWAYS the ones that pay the FINES companies are sued to pay. Portability is very low because it is not meant to be for a laptop because you need to plug drive into own power, and the materials are not made to be tossed around.

This drive is nowhere near 12 Tb. Sure I understand that system formatting takes up some space. Usually 40 to 70 Gigabytes. As seen in the photo from all the drives connected this is the case. But this WD 12TB Elements Desktop External Hard Drive shows 1.1 TB less than its rated capacity. Sure lets give them the reasonable system files space and even bump it up by 50% to 100 Gigabytes of space that still leaves a whole Terabyte of missing storage. This is not a 12 Terabyte solution for storage capacity. Quite simply it is false advertising. This is an 11 Terabyte storage unit. On the plus side it does seem to have reasonable read and write speeds with the usb 3.0 connectivity. Oddly enough the indexing and search features seem rather slow though. The included software was completely useless and would not install, freezing up at 18% each time it was tried. Wherever it was downloading from would just hang for hours while a slideshow would loop about the useful productivity the software would provide. I never could get it to complete so I cant say how wonderful or not it might actually be. I can say that the installer did not have the required X in the top right hand corner to exit out of the operation. Right clicking on it offered no options either. Even going into Task manager and selectively trying to close the process made no difference. It just wouldnt quit. Eventually each time I tried to install the included software with this drive I was forced to restart my computer to get it to release and go away. You arrive at your own conclusions if you might like this kind of behavior or not. As for the drive itself, Western Digital you should stop overstating drive capacity. Just call it what it actually is. Its an 10.9 Terabyte drive. Heck you can round it up for those hidden system files and call it an 11 Terabyte drive, but stop lying and false advertising. Just to be clear this is not a 12 Terabyte capacity drive, nope not at all.

If youre anything like me, you never seem to have enough storage space for your digital files. Luckily, the WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive is here to solve that problem once and for all. This is an impressive piece of hardware that can hold a massive amount of data, making it perfect for anyone who needs to store large files or multiple backups. The first thing youll notice about the WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive is its sleek and minimalist design. It has a simple, black exterior with a small WD logo on the front. The drive is surprisingly compact for its storage capacity and will easily fit on any desk or in a cabinet. The enclosure is made of durable materials, and the drive itself feels sturdy and well-built. Setting up the WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive is a breeze. Simply plug it into your computers USB 3.0 port, and youre good to go. The drive is pre-formatted for Windows, but you can easily reformat it for use with a Mac if needed. Once connected, youll have access to 8 terabytes of storage space thats both fast and reliable. Speaking of speed, the WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive is surprisingly fast for an external drive. It uses USB 3.0 technology, which provides data transfer rates of up to 5 Gbps. This means you can transfer large files quickly and easily without having to wait around for hours. One thing that sets the WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive apart from other external drives is its compatibility with WDs backup software. This software allows you to back up your files automatically and even schedule backups to occur at specific times. This feature is incredibly useful if youre looking for an easy way to protect your data. Overall, I highly recommend the WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive to anyone who needs a lot of storage space. Its fast, reliable, and easy to use, making it an excellent choice for both personal and professional use. So if youre tired of running out of storage space, do yourself a favor and invest in the WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive.

These are good devices, just a litte short on setup, or tech support. But these days everything is short on tech support.

If you want actually 16tb dont buy this. This was a nasty surprise to say the least. That being said this works very well. I could transfer media and files from my dying drives over to this very quickly and without issues so it was worth it. That being said the actual drive capacity is lower than what was advertised which is annoying to say the least.

After getting thru what I think is the infant mortality period for electronics (first 3 weeks of constant use), my 16 TB drive is settling down to production work. These are mainly used for number crunching and raw input data storage. I tend to fill them up every couple of weeks so it is time to order another couple to add to the collection. When I am reading and writing to it, it tends to plateau around 180 MB/sec which is probably an impact of all the other processes going on. This drive has been filled and emptied 3x now so I figure if it survives that usage it is probably safe for storage of data to the end of the job in 3 months or so. My bottom line is simple. I will buy more of them today as they fit my needs. Update. Since the first of the year, I think I have bought 14 of the over 20 TB drives. We use them like floppy disks when the crews are busy churning out data so I just have a pile of drives around. I dont want to jinx it but every drive is hanging in there and churning right along. Right now I have 2x22s and 2s20s hooked up and spinning to my primary computer. They are now mass media storage as all the number crunching is done on 4 and 8 TB SSD drives. Another update. PIcked up a couple 24 TBs and 4 more 22 TBs. They are handling the workload and short term storage requirements nicely. I wish they would write faster but all in all they are quite functional. I have yet to have one drive give me any grief even though when I use them, they are running 24/7 for days on end until I fill them up and set them aside for a few days.
