I decided that making scrappy log cabin blocks was the best way to reduce some of my stash and scrap fabrics. I had looked at the cut to measure strip rulers from Marti Michell and Quilt in a Day and decided to go with the Creative Grids square ruler. Although the videos from Creative Grids show just grabbing a piece of fabric with a straight cut side I have found that the best way for me to utilize the ruler is to cut my strips to size, sew a round and trim using the ruler. The most difficult step for me is choosing the fabrics so to actually decide on fabrics and cut out strips for several blocks at a time makes the sewing go very quick and with the Creative Grids ruler the block is a perfect 12 1/2 every time. I have made over 40 blocks so far and am very happy I choose to purchase this.

At first, I thought using the trim tool to make log cabin blocks in the 12-inch size would make the blocks too big and visually unappealing. I felt an 8-inch or 10-inch size block would have been better. Then I assessed my overflowing mountain of red/white/blue patriotic scraps and yardage that needs to be cut and sewn into charitable quilts for wounded soldiers, and I got busy. My precious stash has been reduced a bit during the couple of weeks of sewing 12-inch blocks. The tool is a great way to use up orphan jelly roll strips. One downside to the trim tool is the high price. I also have problems deciphering the trim tools markings when trimming some multi-color, busy print fabrics.
