Added to food I have dehydrated to keep moisture from building up in the packaging after dehydrating, for home use. They are getting the job done.

Bought these to throw in when I make homemade jerky. Work great and you get 100 for $7 shipped. Really hard to best the price.

I love alone but still like to buy in bulk these are perfect for keeping flour, sugar, rice, crackers, and other dry goods fresh for longer. I drop or or two in the canister, or vacuum seal one in with a half package to bust into later, and no more clumps or spoiled food. I also live in a humid environment, and this may sound so dumb, but I keep screws, nails, etc in jars or other sealing containers rather than the cardboard box or paper bag they came in, and leaving a silica packet in the container staves off rust. I am very happy with these.

Everyone has at one time or another seen the little packets that have the words “Do Not Eat” printed on them. They are typically the size of a sugar packet and included in plastic bags or boxes that house delicate electronic gear and the like. The purpose of these packets is to absorb moisture from the air surrounding the packaged device and to improve its survivability while awaiting sale and transport. These packets are called “desiccant packets” and contain silica gel as tiny, clear beads. They’re considered by many to be a single use item and thrown away once removed from the shipping packaging. Well, even after absorbing moisture the silica gel beads in the packets can be ‘recharged’ buy using a low heat soak and then used again. But who bothers to keep them and what other possible use could the packets have? I have a use, multiplied, and of course never saved my *free* desiccant packs! The process of using a special pigmented powder to coat metal parts rather than the traditional liquid paint is something I’m doing now and the nature of this powder requires that it stays very dry. As received the powder paint flows extremely well because it’s packaged dry and every time a container of powder is opened there is atmospheric moisture ready to sneak in and cause clumping. My purpose for buying these silica gel packs is to place one or two in each container of powder and preserve that ‘factory fresh’ flowing quality that’s needed for smooth and consistent application of this special material. The use of the packets is preventative, not generally a fix for an already deteriorated situation but I do have one case where I may be able to see a desiccant pack (X2) at work. One ‘economy’ powder coating is slightly clumpy and I’m assuming it’s due to excess moisture. I placed two 2gm packets in that container immediately after receiving my desiccant shipment. If the powder container is sealed securely I’m expecting an improvement in the flow and consistency of that powder. Using these desiccant packets can only help, and that’s my expectation.

I package and store dehydrated veggies every summer to use all winter. My big concern has always been moldy figs, plums, squash, tomatoes etc. etc... and losing my trusted organic veggie source. These are that extra level of guarantee I wont lose a jar or twenty of veggies. The upside, these are rechargeable the manufacturer states, and that is what some of the other reviews are saying also. The downside is how do I know if the beads in the packet are saturated? The manufacturer says the beads change color, but the paper packet hides the beads! The instructions offer that the packet, presumably the beads only, are two gr. I weighed 15 of the packets when I got them, and the beads plus packet ran from 2.6 to 2.7 gr. each. It seems the only way to know if theyre saturated is to weigh each one individually, to me. I hope this was helpful.
