As a long-time user of the 401, I bought this 601 to replace the 401 which got stolen out of my luggage a few months ago. Foretrex is the only line of GPSs on the market that do the job for me when Im hiking or dog sledding in extreme winter conditions. The physical buttons mean I can operate it with mitts on, and its AAA batteries can be quickly replaced after the cold swiftly kills them. Ive operated the 401 in temperatures as cold as -38°C/-36°F -- way below the rated -20°C minimum -- without issue.

This Garmin device is a must have for those out traveling or for practical military training out in the field. Easy to use and extremely useful and accurate

Really easy to use

Regardless of system setting, i cannot get enough satellites for anything beyond this being an expensive compass.

This model doesnt have the options of the other handhelds (eTrex 35, GPSMAP 64s) but its lightweight and has all the track and route options needed for hiking. My only issue moving over waypoints from my old unit was the 8 character limit on the name. This was easily fixed in the basecamp software and resent to the device.

I use it for sail boat racing, having a large display and buttons that I can use with gloves is very important to me. Ease of use and the accuracy of the compass are also important, everything else is secondary to me, so your mileage may vary. From my experience it is just a 401 refresh, larger screen, three axis compass(big win) but no other improvements. I wish Garmin would have added some of the features like starting line or lifted/headed from the Quantix. But the 601 wins because the Quantix is hard to use and has a tiny screen. The biggest thing I would like is to have is the GPS time to the second on every screen or at least have it on the timer screen and have it to the second in the data field options.

I really like this product and it’s ease of use. Self intuitive to easily figuring out the main features.
