The test messages I sent myself would bounce back 2-4 hours later or Id get an unable to send message 2-4 hours later. Mine device was defective. I hear they work great but I spent over 4 hours setting this up, downloading and setting up the mandatory app (which costs a monthly fee), entering emergency contact information, and waiting for the GPS to connect. This was a huge waste of time. Im glad I tried so many tests before actually using it on the trail.

Item was great as expected!

I purchased the device and never connected it to a computer, because the device functions fine and connects to the app on your phone. However, I learned that the device gets registered when you connect it to a computer, and you need to make sure that it will indeed connect. I didnt think to connect it to a computer until I noticed that the app does not update the firmware. When I tried to connect it, it would not connect. Charges fine, but will not connect to update with original cable, different cables, or different computers (PC or Mac). Support thought the firmware updates were important and offered to replace the device for $110 out of warranty. I decided that $110 was too much for a firmware update with a new version out but I thought Id warn users if firmware updates matter to you. Plug it in before the warranty expires! I am disappointed that there is no automatic mechanism to notify of firmware updates without plugging into a computer, which is unnecessary for functionality.

I have bought MANY Garmin products for 40 years. This unit only works with an $11. Per month subscription. After a few months I was not using the unit. When I cancelled the subscription I was charged an $87. Cancellation fee. You lost my business FOREVER Garmin. I hope it was worth the $87.!

This thing is amazing! I bought an original InReach 4 years ago. This has a screen, and is a fraction of the size. It receives messages when people when people send them. In the past, you had to send a message to get the device to check for messages. This receives a message when its sent, and has a very easy to access menu to check for messages. Sending a message without a phone isnt really that bad! Yeah, its not a touch screen smartphone, but its like T9 back in the day. Pretty simple. Finally, weather reports show up on the devices screen and the phone, and you can write custom messages from a linked smart phone. This thing is great!
