I wanted this for emergencys but it has so much more to offer. Its small, very light weight & easy to use/setup. Not everywhere has cell service! It means a lot to my family to be able to see where a have been when in tracking. 3 preset messages I custom set-up for my wife to understand that I send out when I have no service. I just choose the appropriate one. Yes we can text with this but I dont really need to. If I do actually have something terrible happen then I could use the SOS. THAT IS WORTH IT ALL. If you go out into the middle of nowhere with no known service or just a short distance away from home it is just a great peace of mind to have.

The screen is small, but in an emergency it will do exactly what it is meant to do! My husband does a lot of outdoor recreation and he has sent multiple messages to check in and reassure me that he is well. Normally we would have no communication when he is in these areas due to no cell service.

    Greater than one week

I recently used the Garmin Inreach Mini on a two week backpacking trip on the Pacific Crest Trail in the Northern Cascades of Washington State. The trail is frequently in trees and valleys, and I found that in more than half of the instances where I tried to send a message, the unit simply did not have the power to make a connection. At one campsite, a hiker with a different satellite phone easily made a connection, and my Mini could not. Short story, I would not take a Mini out again. You cant pick the spot where you will have an emergency!

First let me introduce myself. Im a nature photographer. I often go where no cell service has gone before. As such I have two important needs. I must know where I am and how to get where I wish to be. My other need is to communicate with the outside world for safety and more routine issues. The inReach, since its inception at DeLorme has filled BOTH needs by providing a reliable two-way satellite texting device. And with a Bluetooth paired to my smartphone and the excellent EarthMate app I also have high quality 24k scale map navigation. Ive had each model and they all worked perfectly... period. Of course, Im no fool so theres a magnetic compass and map tucked in a pocket of my backpack in case of electronic failure.

I used to use a Spot communicator since it was less expensive. Now, Ive gone Garmin. The reliability is a lot better. I do a lot of backpacking in narrow, deep canyons. Just the type of place where you need good communication and is also hard to have. This little gem was fast in connecting, sending, and receiving. The battery life was sufficient for a week long trip. Over all, after two trips, Im happy with it.

I have no idea why we waited so long to get this incredible device. Aside from being able to stay in touch, the peace of mind having and emergency out provides a sense of piece when in the backcountry that can only be experienced, and not fully explained.

Im a long time and formerly happy InReach user. Due to changing needs I bought 2 more devices for family members. I logged on and activated the devices and then found out that Garmin has removed the feature to add additional users. This is their hamfisted and lazy approach to recent privacy laws. (There was a confusing warning that stated you could only connect one user per device but nothing that said you could no longer create users.) Your choice is to setup a different *account* for each person, maintain payment information, contacts, and preset messages multiplied by the number of devices/people you have or upgrade to Pro and pay much more. I broke down and decided to create a Pro account just to save the hassle. I tried to cancel service on the devices but the website said activation and cancellation on the same day is prohibited. So tomorrow, I cancelled service on the two new devices and got charged $143.00 for cancellation on *each* device. I was unaware Id signed a service contract with early termination and of course will dispute this. Anyway, I then tried to create the Pro account. The website allows you to get a couple steps into the process and then says Pro customers must call a specified phone number in order to activate. Despite increasing frustration I called the number and got a generic message that said To access your mailbox press the pound key.... So to sum up, if you are an enthusiastic user of InReach and wish to purchase additional services you are penalized with having to do everything multiple times and hope you keep all your devices up-to-date and consistent for your family and hope your credit card isnt compromised since youll need to update for each member. If you decide to pay business rates to avoid the hassle you simply cant set up devices at all. I hope the executive at Garmin who over saw this complete mismanagement of GDPR changes loses their job.
