This will, in fact, work on a Mac: Some reviews and answers suggest this is not Mac-compatible; however, heres the skinny: This unit is plug and play, meaning no setup is required. (Note: The software CD that comes with it is NOT necessary for use; its just a free media suite.) The problem lies in the fact that, when a BLANK disc is inserted, the drive doesnt appear in Finder, which is no doubt confusing. (A disc with content will appear normally.) One method to confirm it is recognized is to go to About This Mac > Storage. To burn a file to a blank disc: Control-click your file and select Burn your_file to Disc — a popup box should give you the option to select the external drive. NOTE: Samsung no longer supports external optical drives. No tech support, no warranty claims via manufacturer.

when I first unpacked this I thought it was too flimsy to be any good. while it is certainly lightweight, it is certainly a workhorse. PROS: it works like a champ, for many hours at a stretch, never stumbles or overheats, just steadily works away perfectly in the background. not a single complaint about its performance, which I consider to be stellar CONS: a bit hard to set up, its not plug and play. if you are using a mac it requires some minor fiddling, nothing major, but if you dont know your way around a mac you might run into some frustration. this is LGs fault as the disc included manual does not cover macs. Im assuming windows users will be just fine. dont know. this thing is a lightweight and requires some holding to get discs in and out. not a big problem. I dont think heftier ones are available except for a much heftier price tag, but they couldnt perform any better than this unit in short, I am very pleased with my purchase and the price was great! FYI: I did not receive anything for writing this review.

Ive been very happy with this external DVD player. I bought it since the new macbook pros dont come with disk drives, and this has worked really well as a substitute. I primarily use it for watching DVDs and burning music CDs and it works great for both. I took off a star just because when the tray opens for you to put in a disk or take it out, the tray does not come out far enough for the entire disk to be outside of the player. So you have to tilt the disk as you put it in and then snap it into place, while trying not to scratch the disk at all. Its not that hard to do, but it seems like its an issue that couldve been avoided pretty easily.

Not all DVD drives will work with M-Discs (the archival long-life discs), but this is one that works well. My new Dell computer does not support M-Discs, and I didnt want to keep my old (slow) Windows 7 computer simply for use with M-Discs (also an LG drive), so at this price I decided to go ahead and purchase it. It works very well. Note that its not the highest speed, and it uses an older (slightly larger) USB plug (the older USB mini, not micro plug), but the main USB plug (standard full size) will work with virtually any computer, so this is highly functional. And my wifes new laptop doesnt have an optical drive (many dont anymore), so she now also has DVD/CD capability for her laptop since this is so easily portable. Reviews on this particular drive at tech sites are excellent, specifically for use with M-Discs, which was my main purpose in buying it. But its great for general DVD/CD use for any computer that doesnt have an optical drive.

Dynamite little external drive component. Installed easily and appears to have a tremendous amount of storage space. I downloaded numerous games, pictures and videos from my C Drive laptop and freed up a lot of space. And even in doing so, I used up less than 10% of the external drives capacity. The files open up easily to review and change the contents. For me, this was a must buy to rescue the storage space on my alien hard drive. I purchased more expensive externals recently that werent compatible with my Alien and cost twice as much. The unit is small, but attractive and tucks away neatly behind the laptop. A good buy at a good price and I can highly recommend it. (Actually, its the second one I purchased over the past 6 months. Still the same quality and price).

Worked out if the box with my Windows 10 PC. Unlike most external drives it does not show up until you insert a disc in the drive and it disappears as soon as the disc is ejected.

I cant believe that some people cant get this to work. You have to plug it in, let it download its recognition software first, and then you can put your included Super Multi Drive Install disc in, and download the needed software to run the program. I absolutely love it, and find that it works exceptionally. I bought it for my HP Stream 13 laptop with Windows 8.1, so that I can transfer my vinyl records through Audacity and make digital files for archiving. The cds that it burns have come out absolutely phenomenal. They sound better than any cds Ive ever burned before with other HP computers, with awesome quality that rivals or even out does store bought cds. Ive been very impressed for something this cheap. Completely surpassed my expectations. It plays cds and dvds perfectly! I havent tried burning any dvds yet, but Im certain in its capability to do so. Im hoping it lasts me a long time. The build quality looks good and what you might expect from LG! Very thin and super light weight. The burn speed was also faster than I expected. Overall, I am very, very happy with this product and I would certainly buy it again. LG really makes great products! I highly recommend this product!

This DVD player/writer is primarily designed to be portable and is best suited for notebooks and lap tops; however, there is no problem hooking it up to a desk top machine, and it comes with software for both PCs and Macs, working with a whole array of Windows operating systems from Windows 8.1 on down. This unit does not come with its own power cord, and a powered USB connection is required; it will not operate if plugged into a USB bank that is not powered. Plug it directly into a USB port on your computer or a powered USB bank, and youll be good to go.

I purchased 4 of these, primarily to backup DVD to hard drive. I connect all 4 drives to a single PC and use them all simultaneously. I had real concerns about whether or not this would work, for a number of reasons. So far Ive worked through a few hundred DVD and had ZERO failures. All discs have been read successfully and theyre plenty fast. Im sure they would work well under any OS like Mac or Windows, I happen to be using Linux. The software I use to backup DVD is the command line program dd.
