Theyre cotton swabs. They do the job, including the ones theyre expressly forbidden from doing. I use these for a myriad of tasks around the bathroom, but also with modeling supplies and cleaning electronics, and the fact that they dont unravel easily works great for my needs, especially when Im cleaning battery acid around solder points.

Ive tried various cheaper brands over the years but nothing beats the quality of a Q-tip.
