When I tried to upgrade from 2004 to 2005 I ran into a problem because I didnt have Flash 7.0 installed. Actually I had a later version of Flash (9.04) but of course Quickbooks couldnt handle that. Heres the fix: go to the Adobe site and download the uninstall program from them. Uninstall your flash player and then Quickbooks will then proceed. Good luck. Joe

I have no idea how this program works, because it will not load on Windows 7. Further research shows it may work on Windows 7 Pro, but that is not what I have. My previous version of Quickbook was great, and exactly what I need.

In my life I have used a variety of scientific and other software. I have never come across something as cumbersome and difficult as Quickbooks. The help menu is completely useless and the technical support is an absolute joke. I actually got some poor woman in India whose idea of help was to say UM for 3 minutes. So far I have figured out what I can on my own, the only thing they seem to be good at is putting you in a position where you have to spend more money.

QuickBooks is the de facto accounting standard for small businesses, and justifiably so. Its relatively easy to learn and get up and running at a basic level, and if necessary, will provide sufficient data for an accountant to clean up and provide you with proper financial statements. Over the years, a group of bookkeepers well-versed in using the program has developed (mostly women, perhaps because they are over-represented in college accounting classes and often prefer flexible hours); they add value at reasonable rates, and are recommended for medium size businesses. Still, as with any computer program, the GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) principle applies, and there is a tendency for business people who turn their bookkeeping over to these consultants to ignore accounting controls, especially segregation of duties. Such companies often suffer embezzlements, so its a good idea to have a CPA oversee the bookkeepers work and establish controls. Forewarned is forearmed. I buy a new version of QuickBooks every few years. What I dislike most about it are installation problems, resulting from its security features. Also, the program is backward compatible but not forward compatible, i.e., the 2005 version will read files created by earlier versions, but not files created by QuickBooks 2006 and later. So, if youre a consultant who relies upon files created by others, you have to stay up-to-date. As mentioned in other reviews, Intuit relies upon tech support located in India. I found the young man I dealt with to be quite competent (more so than the typical American tech support person), but had difficulty understanding him because of his heavy accent and his speaking too fast. Intuits greed is worth a mention. Once youre on their mailing list, they bombard you with advertising. More significantly, several years ago I noticed that after I installed it, the automatic update feature was quite active, with most of the communication going from my computer to Intuit. I suspect that they were sucking up company information for marketing purposes. This is a serious problem for CPAs (who have a legal duty to preserve the confidentiality of client information), as well as any company that wants to preserve the confidentiality of its own data. So, turn off the automatic update feature and run a spyware checker. And, never, never, never subscribe to the online version.

I have been using QuickBooks since 2003 and have always enjoyed this financial software. I use Quicken for my personal finances, but QuickBooks is far superior. The 2005 version is very similiar to pervious versions, but they have made it extremely user-friendly. I have a member of my staff who is not very computer savvy, but she has done very well with this QuickBooks program. The only complaint I have has been with the installation onto my new laptop computer. It was extremely difficult! I called the customer service line to get help and the man that helped me was quick in diagnosing the problem. He walked me through the entire installation process and was very friendly. That is why, even with the installation problems, I still give the 2005 version of QuickBooks 5 stars!

Ive just started a small consulting business. Accounting software has to be QuickBooks, right? My tax accountant recommended it. It must be what I need. Its impossible for me to tell you the frustration I have experienced with this program. Im not a computer or software novice. Ive used both Quicken and MS Money for many years with success. Obviously, QuickBooks is designed to be a more robust program, providing more support to the small business person than the home financial programs do. And maybe thats the problem. This program looks good graphically. It has a lot of high quality instructional videos. So whats the problem? Well, even with the graphics and the videos its nearly impossible to figure out how to do even the simplest task. Reconcile a bank account? Print an invoice? I cant do either after a week of fiddling. I pump information into this beast and it just sits there. It produces nothing. Am I just incompetent? Well, maybe. But heres a clue for you to consider that I should have picked up on myself. Go to the QuickBooks site and look for registered QB experts in your area. If its like my medium sized city, there are dozens in your area. Does the fact that there is a cottage industry devoted to helping people make QB work give you pause? It should. Life is way too short for this program. I dont need any of the exotic features that QB offers, even if I could make it work. There are some good home and small business programs that will do the simple income and expense reporting that my accountant and I need, and will reconcile my bank account too. I wish I could get my $230 back through QBs 60 day money back guarantee, but I have to confess, I dont have much faith that it will work either.

I know there are a lot of reviews slamming this product, but they are mostly unfounded. I have been using each new release of QuickBooks Pro since 2002. I have to say that every new version improves upon the previous one in many ways. For example, this version makes it MUCH easier for me to reconcile my merchant account transactions with my bank statement. It can even organize your transactions in batches and allows you to download any merchant account fees associated with those batches. This alone was a great reason for me to upgrade and was well worth the money spent. I even got a nice $100 rebate.

I am very sad to read so many insults against Intuit and the Need to update their software. What people must consider is with each Update there are many new features that can be put to use immediately. As for Payroll and the necessary features and updates, we can all thank our current tax system. We have a complicated taxing system, yet Intuit Payroll (especially the Enhanced version) simplifies payroll by populating the many federal and state forms required of the small business person. Should you have an accountant overlook your system? I would say YES, regardless of WHAT system you use. Having a trained accountant, or if you are using Quickbooks, a Quickbooks Certified ProAdvisor. The assurance that your system is setup properly AND you are using all the features are worth the expense. Also, if you have the right accountant you should be getting tax advice and tips. All in all, keeping up with technology should be an integral part of your business plan. I have used many types of software and as an accountant I found QuickBooks is geared for the small to average business and requires minor accounting knowledge. However, saying that I will admit a trained accountant should review the system periodically for accuracy and compliance issues. Diane Offutt Woodstock, Georgia
