I’m not impressed with this filter. Debris was gathering under it so I lifted it up and nothing came off the filter. It was like it could pull the debris do it but not actually hold it. It’s also pretty bulky, which I’m willing to be okay with if it actually worked. I thought about getting another and trying it with two. I decided just to go a different route.

How did I not find these sooner? :V Basically, just get these instead of air stones. Do it. Its literally aeration AND filtration of small particles & baddies in the water. Ever since I slapped these in my tanks, theyre crystal clear. The basic concept of these: its submerged in water, an air hose is attached down the center of it; air is pumped through the hose and is forced back upwards through the clear plastic tube that extrudes out of the top (which is removable). With this, aeration happens with bubbles. However, whats truly happening here is due to the forcing of water down and up through the sponge, water is being sucked in by this sponge, and thus thats where your filtration comes into play. It sounds crazy, but it works wonders. In regards to how well does this thing sink: When you get this filter, dont run tap water on it to clean it -- grab a bucket, and put some of your fish water (from the tank this is going in) in the bucket, and then put this filter in it. The trick here is to actually squeeze the filter a few times and itll sink on its own! Magic! This sponge DOES have a weighted base, so it actually can be in a bare-bottom tank just fine. Just remember to squeeze your problems away, sorta like the commercial... yes. Good purchase! 10/10, my mollies do thank you kindly

Listen. I realize sponge filters are simple and probably some of the best filtration out there, but this isnt a 40 gal sponge filter. Maybe 50-55 gallons, but definitely not 30-40 gal. Either the seller needs to figure out a better way to determine size or they need to clarify just how LARGE the large filter is.

I am using this at the bottom of the intake tube for a HOB filter so as to provide extra BIO mass and as a pre-cleaner to help polish the water. I carefully trimed out the piece where the airline goes and then just slipped the unit up onto the intake tube.. I have used these also with a power head to drive them...

Biochemical sponge filter provides both mechanical and biological filtration. Simply install an airline into the unit and provide both aeration and filtration for your fish. In addition, the 4 1/2 inch sponge filter traps waste particles mechanical.
