One of the simplest, economical, and most effective filtration methods for keeping fish alive, with regular water changes with clean water of course. For those that are new to the hobby of fish keeping please look up the ammonia - nitrite - nitrate cycle. This filter only works after the bacteria’s form huge colonies on the sponge. It’s the bacteria that consume the fish waste and convert it into non-deadly (in small amounts) nitrate that you remove with water changes. Until then, it’s just a sponge. If you remove your old filter and replace with this one out of the box you’re killing your fish. Not the filter, YOU! Run this filter along side your old filter for a minimum of two weeks, MINIMUM, before removing the old filter. Consider adding Cycle (Fluval) or Stability (Seachem) to boost the bacterial growth. Clear water is wonderful, but what kills your fish is invisible to humans… Ammonia + Nitrite + Cycled Sponge Filter = Nitrate. Nitrate + Human + Water Changes = Happy Fish. This filter works perfectly once established. In fact, I always have an extra one cycling just in case I need it. Never know when a fish is going to get sick and need a quick set-up hospital tank. If you’re thinking about aquariums, this is the foundational aquarium filer everybody uses. Because it’s cheap and it works!

Not the densest sponge but will work for me. I modified to work with an air stone and a small one outlet whisper air pump in a 65 gallon.

Not a big fan of these. They apparantly did lots of trying to find out how little of weight to add to these to make them still sink. Theres hardly any weight to the weights at all. Very light. So it wouldnt sink. I had to squeeze water into it to get it to sink. Once it did there just barely staying on the bottom. Cuz theres not enough weight they want to keep moving n try to raise. Ill definitely be finding another brand next time.

This product is great but it didn’t come with instructions. I am new to aquarium setups and would have appreciated a set up guide. But they work great now that I have them figured out.

Have had 6 of these running for some time now, and imo, they simply are not permeable enough to get sufficient water flow through them to sustain necessary bacteria. Others Ive had have worked much better and developed colonies of bacteria that help clean the water, and these just arent after many months.

AQUAPAPA Sponge filter for tank 30 - 60 gallon

How it functions:

Sponge filter is an efficient and excellent method of filtration for your fish tank. This sponge filter works with an external air pump or an integral water pump.

The air pump pushes air into the hollow cavity inside the sponge filter thru the tubing, and bubbles rise from the toplift tube thus drawing water thru the sponge walls. It provides mechanical and bio filtration for your tank.

Easy maintenance:

Scoop some old tank water out of your tank into a bucket; wash the sponge in the water and squeeze out the buildup until it"s clean. Sponge needs to be cleaned every month. It"s recommended to change out 25-30% of the water weekly.
