> 3 dayIf you don’t think this is working well, buy a new/better air pump!!! That’s where the actual filter power comes from, not the sponge. These do have a strong smell coming out of the box, easily fixed by a soak in hot water. You do have to squeeze the air out of them initially to get them to sink, but this is standard for most sponge filters. If you want it heavier, you can simply tie it to a heavier base with fishing line, but it’s really fine as-is. You can’t beat this for the price. If I could give it more than five stars, I would.

> 3 dayOne of the simplest, economical, and most effective filtration methods for keeping fish alive, with regular water changes with clean water of course. For those that are new to the hobby of fish keeping please look up the ammonia - nitrite - nitrate cycle. This filter only works after the bacteria’s form huge colonies on the sponge. It’s the bacteria that consume the fish waste and convert it into non-deadly (in small amounts) nitrate that you remove with water changes. Until then, it’s just a sponge. If you remove your old filter and replace with this one out of the box you’re killing your fish. Not the filter, YOU! Run this filter along side your old filter for a minimum of two weeks, MINIMUM, before removing the old filter. Consider adding Cycle (Fluval) or Stability (Seachem) to boost the bacterial growth. Clear water is wonderful, but what kills your fish is invisible to humans… Ammonia + Nitrite + Cycled Sponge Filter = Nitrate. Nitrate + Human + Water Changes = Happy Fish. This filter works perfectly once established. In fact, I always have an extra one cycling just in case I need it. Never know when a fish is going to get sick and need a quick set-up hospital tank. If you’re thinking about aquariums, this is the foundational aquarium filer everybody uses. Because it’s cheap and it works!

> 3 dayI used this in my axolotl tank, and after about 12 hour using it, I already saw the water getting mercy. After about three days, I couldnt even see through the tank because the filter was now trapping and spitting out filth and leftover poop. Terrible product!
