Got this after using the same kit at multiple conferences. Such an improvement from the plain old iron with no temperature control I was using before.

Gets up to temp very quickly. I like the very precise, very stable (digital) temperature control. Hakko is pretty much the standard brand w/ plenty of accessories. It would be nice if there was a caddy to allow this to be more portable - (making one myself). Best soldering station you can get for under $100. Nice.

I think anyone who enjoys soldering and certainly anyone who, for whatever reason, needs to but hates doing it, like myself, will find this an invaluable investment that is worth every cent and probably even at twice the price. A skill that has eluded me and always a source of frustration, which I would attempt only as a last resort. Recently I developed an interest in quadcopters, a hobby that involves not only a great deal of soldering, but requires a level of precision I had never considered nor desired attaining. However, the satisfaction the hobby brings me has driven me to aquire six different soldering irons / stations and many types of solder in my effort to become efficient. Many hours of practice and 2 ruined flight control boards had finally allowed me to overcome the dread associated with the skill. Still not satisfied with the equipment I was using, I researched what the best copter builders were using and quickly found this to be the overall favorite. The only regret I have regarding the purchase of this unit, is that I didnt do my homework sooner because the difference is night and day. I can only imagine the time and frustration I might have saved by buying this early on. Overnight I went from viewing soldering as an accepted means to an end, to actually looking forward to doing it and being proud of the results. Having this unit and a little practice, along with the basic fundamentals of soldering is all that one needs to avoid much aggravation.

This is the best soldering iron I have ever used. I highly recommend it. The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is because the user interface can be a little confusing. They should have just used a button or two more so as not to rely on long presses, etc., so much. For example, there is an up button but not a down button for temperature. And it is confusing how to use presets. But if you want a seriously good soldering iron this one fits the bill.

Going from a soldering pen from RadioShack to this was a tremendous step, but it was well worth the price. Going from a 5 minute heating cycle to 15 seconds has made every job far easier. Great quality and construction. Tips and heating elements are easy to change. Highly recommended.

I read about this in an electronics forum for a mic preamp kit. They recommended a few quality irons, and this was on the list. The tip that it comes with is pretty big, so if youre looking to solder onto PCB boards, make sure that you get a smaller tip for it. Im very happy with it.
