I am repairing some rotten boards in a deck, and found that the joists also need replacing, even though they are the old CCA-treated wood that is supposed to last forever. If you have ever cut through a piece of pressure treated wood, you will see that the pressure treating only goes maybe a quarter inch deep into the wood, a half inch at most. The whole center of the lumber is untreated. When you drive nails into the wood, sometimes it cracks a bit, or maybe it cracks naturally as it dries and ages. These cracks give water and fungus a path into the untreated core of the wood and rot takes hold. So it is important to keep things dry and sealed as much as possible. Using this joist tape is one of the keys to building a quality deck that will last for decades. This particular tape is very good. It is 24 mils thick (adhesive + rubber with liner removed), very stretchy and with a strong adhesive. It sticks to damp pressure treated wood just fine but is still easy to handle. No odor. The stretch lets it seal around screws or nails, and it keeps water from penetrating the top of a joist. The spacing between deck boards trapped debris (dirt, pine needles, maple seeds, leaf bits) that hold moisture. The constant moisture on the unprotected joist, even with pressure treating, caused rot in my joists after 15 years. Your mileage may very depending on your climate. If you are building a deck to last, or having someone build one for you, insist on using this joist tape to build a deck that will last.

This is a simple solution to give my deck extra life. The tape is thick and sticks once its applied. The best test I can show is in the picture. I punctured the tape with a nail, and it sealed exactly as it should around the nail preventing leaks. And it helps with any deck squeaks too!! Be aware there is a thin cellophane like layer that needs to be peeled off before applying. It is there so the roll doesnt stick to itself. I hope this was helpful!

Just as advertised, its a good water proofing tape. It even stick to moderately dirty and old lumber.

This seems to be good butyl tape for applying to deck joists. It’s super sticky, yet reasonably easy to work with. We replaced an old deck several years ago, and I believe it was original to the house (so over 30 years old). Many (if not most) of the deck boards were super spongy, but to our surprise, the joists actually weren’t in bad shape. I think when the deck was painted, the paint ran down between the boards, covering the sliver of joist exposed between the boards, and, in effect, doing what this tape will do. But we replaced the deck boards with composite boards, which will never be painted. At the time, I’d never heard of joist tape, so we didn’t use it. I only happened to see it on a home improvement show a few weeks after we’d finished our deck. Live and learn! Now we’re building a second deck, and it will also be made with composite boards, so I definitely wanted to use joist tape! Trex makes their own joist tape (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LDHSUH8), but it costs twice as much. It has a 20-year warranty, but it’s probably not worth the hassle and higher cost.

I did test with small piece and I will say it is easy to use - peel off protective film and it is easy to adhere to piece of wood, it bends and folds easily so I can see how it would be great to seal around any screws in a joist for example. It is HEAVY duty tape - and product states it is anti-aging and I believe it will be. I have a big deck project coming up in the summer - rebuilding deck that is falling apart - I will use this tape over the joists because we are putting on new deckboards and hopefully reusing old joists - this tape will seal over where previous screws were located (which is a potential breach point for water to seap in) as well as over the new screws.

I like the rubber feel of this tape. I havent used it for its intended purpose since I dont have a deck, but I have used it for other small things around the house and it works well. The tape is nice and sticky and adheres nicely.

I use this on the top of every deck joist when building. This tape is equally annoying to install as the national brands... i.e. do NOT let it touch itself on the sticky side. There is no separating it. Of course, stick is what its supposed to do and it does that well. It has held up for some time waiting for me to complete my decking install.

I was shocked to see that these rolls are 3 wide, not 2 as advertised which would obviously protect the joist beams more than 2 would. The tape is also thickened in order to putty itself to the joist and lock out moisture, dirt, bugs, dust, pollen and any other debris. Putting the tape on this way will prolong the life of your structure which is why you bought this tape for in the first place. This joist tape is a sure winner! Make sure you put the tape on when the wood is COMPLETELY DRY, dust free, clean and ready for you to place the freshly cut tape on the wood you want protected. We have started using it anywhere there is wood to wood contact in the exterior, such as decking and wooden stairways. 5 STARS!
