First off, as much as I LOVE Amazon and I RARELY find products cheaper than here I did find this at a local Tractors Store for less than $5 so I did not purchase this from Amazon. Also I really rely on honest amazon reviews for products and so far I have found reviews to be very helpful so this is my way to pay it back. I know nothing about leather except where it comes from. I purchased an old 1950s US made fillet knife at a garage sale recently and it came with a leather sheath. The sheath looked like it was in good shape but it was so dry I could not bend it for fear of shattering it like glass. I live in Arizona and I can only assume that the knife and sheath had been in someones hot dry garage for decades. I had some saddle soap (that I did buy from Amazon) and I used that to clean up the sheath but it was still stiff. Now, when I say stiff I mean it was as if it was carved from wood. The sheath was a light golden leather color and other than it being petrified it looked like it was in really good shape. I purchased this stuff based on some internet research and the good reviews on Amazon. When I got home with it I poured a little out into a tiny cup and used a small brush to start brushing this oil on that old leather knife sheath. Every coat of oil I applied was absorbed as if it were a sponge. I filled that tiny cup three or four times and I finally stopped applying the oil, not because it wouldnt take anymore but rather I was afraid I would oversaturate it (if that is even possible). I now have it hanging from a string to just soak in the oil. The sheath is now a really rich dark almost chocolate brown color that is absolutely beautiful. The stiffness and dryness is also gone and the leather can now be moved and bent but not quite like new. I want to give it some time before I try. before I oiled the sheath the belt loop was so dry, I could not pry the two pieces of leather apart. I can now get my finger through the belt loop. The leather sheath had also dried with a twist in it.... I was able to untwist and straighten out the sheath. The oil did darken the leather but I am not going to ding the product for that because the directions clearly warned me about that, not to mention I LOVE the darker look of the leather. As many reviews as I have read and benefited from, I truly hope someone can benefit from this one. Oh, on a side note, I also had some mink oil that I tested on a small spot before I purchased this. There was no comparison. This stuff beat the mink oil hands down for bringing the leather back to life. I think the mink oil will probably be good as a maintenance later once my sheath has fully absorbed all of the oil. I figured 2 bucks for an American made fillet knife and five dollars for this and I think I got a smokin deal! I am going to make a point to look for old leather items now just to restore them!!!

Surpisiingly unavailable at places like ACE Hardware, this is an essential item for all leather work gloves as well as baseball mitts, extends their lives and protects them from water damage. Im very happy with it!

I prefer a soft leather that can take the wear and tear of everyday use. This Neatsfoot Oil has a good reaction on my belt and even my boots which helps to soften and preserve them. I would recomend it to anbody that is into leather.

Ive been using Neatsfoot Oil since the 1960s, when my Dad showed me how to properly break in and form a baseball glove (when they used to be leather). I found out many years later the NF oil refinery was just a couple miles away (Philadelphia). I think for working stiff leather nothing is better. It will darken the leather so care should be taken or another product used if thats an issue. On working items like gloves, harnesses, belts, saddles & saddlebags, shouldnt be an issue. The smell isnt bad, it doesnt linger, but you are dealing with rendered animal shinbones so dont expect lilac or citrus, etc scent (THOSE scents are all chemicals, those are the ones you need to worry about.)

I learned the hard way with another oil-based product. But for work boots or baseball gloves, this product will make the leather will become softer, more supple, much less likely to crack; the leather will not absorb moisture and dissolved salt. But you will lose the ability get the item to shine. To get all of the above, and a preserve the ability to shine, talk to your dress shoe manufacturer for the proper regimen and materials. Most of the finer shoe manufactures make there own balm, cream paste, and some have a final shine product as well.
