> 3 dayLove This Watch. Im not a big review writer but I must tell everyone that this is a great watch. I must first tell everyone that I purchased a Fenix 5 and sent it back, because the menu button didnt work. Then I purchased a forerunner 935 because of reviews that I had read. I really liked the 935. Functionality is exactly the same as the Fenix 5. I kept it for nearly a month and then decided that the plastic look just wasnt for me. I decided to upgrad to the 5x strictly for vanity reasons. It looks better. While I was concerned about the size I actually really like the larger size. Im a big guy and it doesnt look too big. Its also not heavy, like I thought it would be. I think I have looked at every fitness watch on the market. I hate the thought of charging a watch. I travel a lot and am absent minded so I will just forget. With daily exercise and no gps, I charge the watch about once ever 14 days, which works for me. I almost never take this watch off. I swim, shower and do everything else and it just works. Just getting into the different apps and watch faces. My wife has a Fitbit and I just cant understand how people charge a watch every other day and take it off to shower. I shower at the gym and would definitely lose it. In all honesty, I could live without the notifications but they also work really well. Anyway, I love this watch. Ill update my review of I find any issues.

> 3 dayGarmin continues to impress me with the level of quality in the product the more I use it and get used to its features. The only reason this product is getting 4 stars is because of the price point; I am used to paying around $200 for fitness watches/trackers but I decided this time around to get something with more features and durability. I have been a Fitbit user since 2014 with the Flex, then Surge, then Blaze and I decided that I would switch to Garmin after I purchased my husband the Garmin fenix 5X. After tinkering around with his watch and the app interface, I decided to upgrade from my 1.5 year old Blaze due to sheer number of functions it couldnt perform and I was not happy with it anymore. Once I got my watch, it was a hard adjustment, as with any brand-to-brand switch. In addition to the non-touch screen interaction, I had to familiarize myself with activity selection and start/stop buttons as well as data review functions. If you are making a drastic switch like I did, I recommend setting quite a bit of time aside to familiarize yourself with this watch as well as the Garmin Connect app. This watch is VERY customizable; there are so many things you can change to your liking that it is overwhelming (coming from a Fitbit user). I really like this aspect but it takes some getting used to. You can also customize the band; this particular package comes with a yellow band as a bonus. I do not have the intention of using this color, I actually ordered the turquoise band from Garmin. The watch itself is very sturdy feeling and has some weight to it (rugged). I prefer the round face versus the square with my old Fitbit; it just looks better in my opinion. The 5 buttons on the side of the watch feel very good when you press them. You can choose whether or not to have haptic feedback when you press the buttons as well as a tone/chime; I have both enabled. The watch face is obviously customizable as well, you dont use the pre-loaded one like Fitbit, you have the ability to download more from the Garmin Connect app and even further customize it (colors and data displayed). With the same app, you can also download widgets and add them to your watch and the order they appear. I got this watch just in time for a class I am now participating in; RIP = running improvement program. I have only ran with this watch 3 times since I got it about 1.5 weeks ago. The GPS is not exact, I was running 1.5-mile run test and it gave me my 1-mile time about 75m too soon. I am not too finicky with the distance difference. What really sent me over the moon was the VO2 max as well as the heart rate zones; not only will track this for you but based on this data it will suggest a rest time (usually 24-48 hours for me). I also loaded a yoga activity function on this watch as well; it tracked my heart rate as well as time spent in this activity. I have not tried the golfing function on this yet but I intend to use it whenever I get to the course in the springtime. I recommend this watch to anyone; you dont need to be a hardcore gym rat or marathon runner to get use out of it. I am not super athletic by any means but I have been using fitness watches for a few years now. I also like to jog/run for hobby and as job security (military member) so the fact that this watch and the app can track every aspect of my workout and improvements is amazing. If you can afford it, I think it is worth the money.

24-11-2024I got this watch on Prime Day for 50% off. Its an amazing purchase. The fact that the GPS works anywhere in the world is unparalleled, from the US to the ROK-DPRK DMZ. Battery life is amazing. However, activity tracking drains it, so I turned it off - I dont find the steps or stairs climbed or heart rate particularly useful to me. I charged the watch to 90% about 11 days ago and its still at 23% with daily or near-constant use of timer, stopwatch, notifications, activity tracking on runs, etc. If you wish to go for the Fenix 6 series, by all means do, as the 6X Solar looks particularly amazing. However I find the 5X goes above and beyond in its abilities. Once, I got lost in South Korea and I had to find my way back home (30 minute walk). I used the GPS, and luckily I had done a workout where I was staying. Therefore on the map my home showed up as a significant location, and I was able to find the directions to get home. CONS: Sometimes the directions for the routes are a little confusing. I have trouble sometimes figuring out where the GPS is telling me to go but I find that zooming in/out appropriately fixes this. I rarely take it off, its waterproof, the Sapphire glass has yet to get any scratches, I have one small scratch on the metal casing from regular use, it doesnt bother me.

> 3 dayI bought this right after it came out, and spent about 100$ more than they currently sell for. I would make that purchase again. This is an outstanding watch. the battery lasts way longer than you will every require it to, the smart watch functions are seamless, and it is very comfortable. As with all Garmin products, the customization and availability of third party apps is outstanding. The mapping is the ONLY reason to get this over the Fenix 3 series, however. The difference between a Fenix 3 and a Fenix 5 is pretty much non existent. Certainly not at the cost tradeoff. The 5X has the ability to use detailed maps, which is priceless when you spend time in the woods or on deployment. Even better, by using third party sources you can load this with FREE maps, so do not feel obligated to purchase Garmins expensive maps. the HR sensor is NOT as accurate as a chest strap, so if you do detailed HR training, I recommend buying their chest strap to pair with this watch. It tends to read lower than actual HR, and requires the watch to be painfully tight to read even close to accurately. It is extremely durable, I have dropped it on concrete many times. It has stood up to austere living in Afghanistan, back country trekking in the Cascades, swimming, a dog that is pretty mouthy and day to day use. The only thing that is showing wear is the wrist strap, which i plan to upgrade to a nylon strap anyway.

> 3 dayBluetooth wont pair and stay connected, Update 5/30/2017 The latest firmware has solved the random bluetooth disconnect problem :) I have been running v3.30 for almost 3 weeks, it the bluetooth only disconnected once. Bumping the the rating back to 4 stars Bluetooth wont pair and stay connected, Update 5/10/2017 Sent the 5s to Garmin, they wont send out the replace until they receive the defected unit. Took 2 weeks to receive my replacement unit. The replace unit does connect however, randomly once to twice a day the bluetooth will loose connection with the phone... Contact tech support, they claimed a new firmware is about to release, they want me to download the new firmware to see if fixes the problem. I have another week before my 30 return policy expires with Amazon, I hope Garmin releases the new firmware in time and fixes the problem... Bluetooth wont pair and stay connected - 4/20/2017 Waited 3 months for Fenix 5S to arrived and it did this week. Everything worked as expected(I owned a Fenix 3) except it wont pair and stay connected with my Samsung S8. It would connect for 10-20 seconds then disconnect for 20-30 seconds. Did all the troubleshooting steps, eg reinstall the Garmin Connect app, rebooting the cellphone, rebooting Fenix 5S... Called Garmin tech support, on the phone with the support for 40 minutes performing all the troubleshooting steps, including connecting Fenix 5S to another cellphone(Samsung S7), same problem with 2nd cellphone. Garmin tech support is asking me to send this Fenix 5S to them and they will send me a replacement. 2 stars = spending $750 to wait for 2 weeks to get a replacement

> 3 dayAm in love with this watch. Came from a Fitbit Charge 2, Garmin Vivoactive HR, and this watch provides way more analytics such as recovery time, post workout review, and the HR sensitivity is a lot more consistent too. However the best part about this watch is its ability to be used in all occasions. Something which the vivoactive was terrible at. One thing I recommend though. Is that you consider the sizes carefully. I am a fan of big faced watches, and have a decent sized wrist. The standard 5 is as large as I would go. Also, I went with the non sapphire version because: 1. I dont need the wifi for syncing 2. Reviews on the Garmin forum have shown that the sapphire vs mineral: mineral is clearer. 3. Go with slate grey if you want darker. But not the black that is the only option avail for the sapphire with black silicon band. The black chips easily. And will reveal the silver metal underneath - feedback from Garmin forums. 4. Added a $7 screen protector, and I think my glass will remain as scratch free if not better than a sapphire one. 5. These watches are constantly updated with new models so often, I cant imagine myself keeping this longer than a year before wanting an upgrade - for features.

> 3 dayI have Vivoactive HR and decided to upgrade to the Latest and greatest Fenix 5. Received the watch and started the testing and comparison. Used Fenix5 on the left wrist, Vivoactive HR on the right. Results: GPS: Fenix 5 often showed me waking on the other side of the road. Vivoactive HR - 2 meters away from the road. Tested with reading every second, GPS, GPS+Glonass. GPS + Glonass was the most precise, but still not as good as Vivoactive HR. One of the measurement on a walk of ~1.6 miles, Fenix read it to be 1.76. Vivoactive aways showed 1.59-1.6miles. Battery life: Charge both at the same time. Wore both constantly. Al activities started at the same time. When Vivoactive died after 7 days of use with half an hour of GPS, Fenix still had 13% of battery. So would last an additional day or 2, not much of improvement. HR: Running - ok, similar results to Vivoactive Intervals - Vivoactive catches up ~10 seconds after the 30second sprint completed. then stays in sync. Fenix - never goes above 130 BPM. Occasionally after the interval it goes to 110 and stops there. I dont get this heart rate even in the end of a rest time before the next sprint. Fenix during he rest goes to 90 BPM. Weight lifting: Leg day: Fenix 5 - averages at 110 BPM with peaks of 120 BPM. Vivoactive - averages at 120 with the peaks of 150 Non-leg day - Fenix 5 - averages at 90 with peak at 100BPM. Vivoactive - averages at 120 with the peaks of 150 Hiking uphill: Fenix 5 - 130-170 BPM. Vivoactive - 160-170 BPM. I tried adjusting Fenix 5, upper/lower/ interna side of the arm. Always same results. When contacting Garmin, the response from them was that OHR is not as as precise as the strap by its nature, missing that the comparison was done to their older product, which was not as precise as a strap, but not by 30~50% This doesnt look like an upgrade and GPS and HR are pretty much messed up. The look of fenix 5 is definitely great, but is worse nothing with faulty hardware or software which messes up the readings. And Given Garmin had it right with old model, it is sad, that the new one became a downgrade. There are comments about the black bezel getting scratched easily. In my case during 2.5 weeks of testing there are 0 scratches. Now, Fenix 5 has some cool metrics, taken during activities, but question is if they are precise at all, given that the HR and GPS readings are not.

> 3 dayIf youre coming from an Apple Watch, be warned: the display on the Fenix 5s (or just about any Garmin wearable) is a washed out, muddy mess by comparison. Yes yes the battery life is phenomenal and the fitness tracking is similarly impressive, but every time you look at this watch you will think wow, that looks really bad and I cant believe I spent that much money on it. I gave it a solid month and put it through its paces...mostly distance running, but also misc. strength training as well. As a fitness wearable, it does more than 99% of people will care about, and of the workout routines most do care about, its superb - although not dramatically different from an Apple Watch (specifically with regards to distance running). Im certain there are people out there for which this will suffice and/or who hate the Apple Watch and all Apple products - to them I say: great! Buy this watch and enjoy. However, if youve ever seen a modern, high resolution display you will view the Fenix display and instantly know how theyre able to get such great battery life - by making a display with the color gamut and resolution of a TV from 1979. If youre thinking: no problem! I need to be able to track my fitness performance whilst jumping out of a plane!, I would remind you that youll be looking at the display of this watching frequently during the day for basic watch-type functions. Again, some people dont care, and if youre one of these folks - go for it. Best advice - at this price, go to a store and see it in person first.

Greater than one weekI had been eying this watch for several months before I finally bit the bullet and made the purchase... I am SO glad that I did. I have been using this watch for about 4 weeks now and I have no major complaints. I am a runner (Currently training for a half marathon) and this watch is incredible as far as tracking my runs and providing accurate feedback. It is super customizable and the Garmin Connect App/Connect IQ App are both great! This watch tracks a lot of stuff and so far it all seems to be accurate except for the sleep tracking. Although it may be due to me having a baby that sleeps in the room with me so maybe I just feel like I’m awake more than the watch says? Lol I didn’t buy this watch for the sleep tracking though so it doesn’t bother me at all that it may not be spot on feed back. The display is easy to read in all conditions. I love that I can control my music from the watch and also see phone notifications. It’s much easier to mange these things from my watch during a long run rather than trying to fumble around with my phone. I got the 42mm size and it’s prefect for my small wrist (I was worried about it being bulky) The white/rose gold is so feminine and can be dressed up/down. Overall this watch is definitely worth the price!
