Beautiful watch but typical Garman operating system and dark hard to see backgrounds. There’s 3 different menus, took me 3 days or so to figure out some of it. The connect app which you need didn’t have the oxy pulse on it???? Wife’s does, so thought maybe it had to go through the computer to add it in. Garman connect app wouldn’t even find the watch. Lots of connection issues watch to all apps you need to work this complicated thing. Would be great watch for someone who enjoys dickering around finding functions on the various button menus. I’m an old guy who started on windows 3.1 and sick of learning new OS. Espeacially garman stuff that won’t connect up half the time, literally! Sent it back and put my old timex back on!

There is really nothing bad I can say about this watch. I do have (and love) the massive G-Shocks, the Suunto Ambit series, and several Garmin products including their Edge I use for Cycling, Approach for golf, and the Tactix model that I have in my rotation of watches that I wear. I purchased the 51mm case size (Im getting older and need a larger screen) with the silicone band. Physically, the watch is a good size with an incredible color screen, and the band is very comfortable. The band is also perfectly long enough even for my very large wrist and it changes out very quickly with Garmins ingenious design. As an aside, really, how long has it taken watch makers to finally invent a way to easily remove and exchange watch bands in just a matter of seconds without making it look cheap and without tools! The customizability of just about all aspects of the software and how you use it on the watch is the most exceptional Ive ever seen. You can move applications or widgets/data fields that you use the most installed right where you can easily access them, instead of having to negotiate though tedious submenus. I really only purchased this watch to include in the rotation of watches that I wear and when I travel and I need to have maps and GPS readily available to me. The one thing Ive noticed is that over the years, the acquisition of the GPS signal has gotten much quicker; this watch gave me a full signal in just a couple of seconds and while I was inside and about 5 feet away from a window in my house. Just to be clear as a reviewer, Im not going to use it for exercise since I just ride my bike and have the Edge model for that data and when I golf, I have the Approach model that I snap on my belt, so my perspective is for just using it as an every day watch. Another fantastic feature is the Garmin Connect IQ store where you can get free apps, widgets, data fields, and watch faces (Ive downloaded and installed quite a few of each). The connectivity feature with your phone and through the Express program on your computer is another feature where I believe Garmin has the upper hand. This watch is very comfortable and the most powerful wearable GPS unit Ive ever used. Im sure youll be equally as impressed.

Smart, attractive, dependable, and accurate. I bought this for mountain biking and wilderness exploration. To be absolutely truthful, I thought it might be a little too big, but nope, it fits me perfectly. As a matter of fact, I use it for everything now. Running, sleep, the gym, on trips (it keeps track while youre flying @30k feet), and all things in-between. I never really put much into the data component of my daily routines, but now I have interesting characterization from day to day, and enjoy the watch. When I first decided to purchase a gps watch I took some time to look around and decided Garmin would be what I wanted, because the application was Gps. If you want other things more relegated to daily life responses, and an iterative component, there might be better watches for that, but if you want to know where the hell you are!, this is your watch. I also thought about the smaller version without the map, but after using the map to generalize from a macro perspective while out in the deep brush, Im elated that I didnt. This watch helps me stay the course from reference vector to vector. I have no limitations with where I go and how to get back. Frankly speaking, its the BEST. I count on it.

I purchased this watch from REI because some Amazon vendors like GPS City were overcharging. My review is solely based on a mountaineer, climber, and hiker’s perspective. Garmin has hit a home-run with this watch when it comes to hiking, climbing and ski/board mountaineering. I can upload .gpx climbing routes and navigate to and from flawlessly on the 1:24,000 scale $99 topo map upgrade. The 13ers, 14ers, trails are fully visible & accessible on the map. Furthermore, I sold my Garmin GPSMAP62stc handheld. This is truly a replacement to heavy and bulky handhelds with an insane amount of features beyond just mountaineering. The climbing, hiking, snowboarding activities are included and track G-Metrics accurately enough for me. I also own the Garmin Virb Ultra Action Camera and I can initiate pics/vids from my wrist. In addition, I receive low battery warnings in the same way. The battery life isn’t the best when in full GPS track mode, but I can get a full day of tracking with about 1/4 of the battery left. This is not a problem on multiple day climbs using an external battery or solar charger. I’m amazed how fast it charges! To conclude, this watch is a beast! If you want a GPS/fitness watch on steroids this is it. If you like big screens and more affordable options this is not for you. If you are on the fence about a handheld I recommend this option. UPDATE 6/2/17 - Charged from 16% to 100% in under 2 hours on a RAVPower 10050mAh Outdoor Portable Charger. UPDATE 6/3/17 - Half day of mountaineering/splitboarding/climbing/course following. 56% battery level. Not bad! UPDATE 6/12/17 - Whatever Garmin did with the new update they nerfed my altimeter. Its 192ft off! I calibrated 4 times on my climb. Please see pic. The actual elevation is 13,822ft. This is a new issue... UPDATE 6/15/17 - The sapphire face is bombproof, but the metal around it scratches way too easy! UPDATE 8/12/17 - The altimeter is consistently off... DONT BUY IF YOU WANT ACCURACY! UPDATE 8/27/17 - Watch connects and disconnects randomly with PC. Read the reviews with the same issue UPDATE 8/19/18 - Battery Life is now insanely poor running a course and usual functions. Started the day at 98% and ended half-day at 6%. Seriously? The new update has definitely compromised battery life.

Garmin simply makes GREAT watches for athletes (who want some minimal smart watch features too!). Before this I bought FITBIT products and was always returning them before a year of use expired due to the watch stopping functionally or band detaching from the watch. Not to mention the fitbit branded products had minimal battery life. I love the fact that this watch can go at least a week between charges (with reasonable daily 1hr runs using GPS). Along with the activity tracking, the watch offers several apps as well as message display which keeps me from always having to pull my phone out of my pocket to see what notification popped up on the screen. Perks: * decent GPS tracking - maps are nice on the watch as well when youre out and hiking about with little guidance on the trail signage. Saves you from giving up too soon, or from taking a bad shortcut on the way back! * decent heartrate monitoring from wrist with support for bluetooth straps as well. * syncs with strava and many other apps through garmin or direct upload * awesome battery life Downsides: * a bit heavy, had to get used to it for a week before I could handle the extra weight. * returned the first one I bought due to a vibration feature that stopped working at full strength after a week. Other smart watches are literally battery consumers and dont even make it a day or two between charges. Who needs a watch to talk to a cell tower when you already have a phone? Id much prefer to charge once ever ~2 weeks. Really excited to get one of the newer Garmin watches with solar charging to extend this out to nearly 20-30 days (after the price drops of course - haha!).

Ive had my Fenix 5S Sapphire (black) for a few days now and I LOVE it. I have the worlds narrowest wrists so obviously I was stoked when this smaller watch came out. Of course its still bigger than your average show or work watch, but they packed quite the punch into it. Its actually not very noticeable on my wrist; its light and Im very comfortable sleeping with it. This is my first watch that does anything beyond displaying time and a stop watch, so I was a bit overwhelmed at first with all its app-craft and widgetry. Within a day I nailed down its pertinent features, activities and customization, and theres still so much more to discover. I wanted this watch particularly for its stand alone gps tracking, plus the altimeter/barometer, and compass. It synchs with my iPhone immediately to display more detailed data for me to peruse (I.e. Sleep patterns, courses, average pace records throughout the activity, etc). You can also race your saved activity paces! Its perfect for my kind of activities: run training, trail exploring (has map features and reverse routing assistance), hiking data, and sleeping (yes its an important activity). I didnt think Id care for the smart notification capabilities and I actually turned emails off. I do find myself using it very often when I get texts and it allows me to separate from my phone a bit more at home. Im hoping one day there will be a customizable watch with a la carte capabilities/sensors to shed off the price (I dont golf or swim), but until then, this is the watch to get and wont disappoint for the price.

Overall I am very impressed with the Fenix 5s sapphire. I actually purchased the Fenix 5 originally but returned it because it was just a little too big to wear as an everyday watch. The 5s is a great size and great looking watch. I was worried it would be too small considering all the marketing aimed toward women and small wrists. I am 5 10 with medium sized wrists and it looks and feels just right to me. The only complaint I have is that the band is a little short. They should have provided or offered a regular and large size band. The band buckles on the 4th hole for me so it is fine but it would be a better fit if the band were longer. Other than that I have run with the watch a few times now and it is very accurate and performs well. The smart notifications from my iPhone are consistent which is more than I can say for the apple watch I had in the past. The display is fantastic in outdoor sunlight. It could be better indoors and the built-in light to read in the dark could be better as well. It can get bright but that display is not crisp when the light is used in the dark. Again, overall this is a stellar watch and I am very happy with it. Highly recommend the 5s if you are on the fence between the 5 / 5s.

I cant say enough great things about this watch. Its a fitness watch I wouldnt feel silly wearing in a meeting. The quick swap bands add great versatility. All the features are really solid and perform well. The app is great and syncs well with almost anything main stream. GPS features are really impressive. The notifications are a game changer for me as I dont want to be the guy fiddling on my phone constantly in a meeting, I can simply look quickly at my watch and know if I need to step out and take care of an emergency. The interface will quickly grow on you and its easy to use. Battery life could easily last a week with GPS turned off and charges super fast with just a simple USB 2.0 connection to my computer. This is just an impressive watch. I get complements on it everywhere I go. What I like the most about this watch is that it isnt more than it needs to be. Unlike an Apple Watch which at a glance looks like it is so much more than this... this will be a watch you will be still wearing on your wrist 8 years from now... unlike an Apple Watch that costs nearly as much that you want to replace after 2 years because its slow. This is a different animal. Worth every penny. No regrets.

I love so many features of this product, but hate the stress program on it. On my watch the heart rate sensor and the stress program that is based off of heart rate variability does not work properly. I have contacted Garmin three different times and either no resolution or no response to them. I was told the first time I contacted them regarding this that could be a sensor error and they would get back with me. Two months later and I have tried contacting them 2 more times with absolutely no response. I can do a hard reset of the entire watch and the feature will work for 3-5 days before malfunctioning again. I really do not want to have to hard reset my watch constantly and lose all the other customization. Because of this error I am not sure how much I can trust other features of the watch. If this feature worked and Garmin had responded to my problems I would probably have given this product a 5 star rating but not happy with the watch or the customer service at this point. The sensor problem finally resolved with latest update. Now i LOVE the watch!!
