I have about 400 watts of outdoor lights. The plug has built in overheating protection, which is great; however at 100% brightness, our outdoor lights are too much for this plug. We had no issues plugged directly into the outlet. We have to die about 50% for this smart plug. The lights are dimmable incidents. Combined about 400watts full power. If they were LED, this might not be an issue.

Received this plug a few weeks ago, and have been using it for outdoor holiday lights. Packaging and everything was nice, and Kasa makes set up a breeze. Only slight quirk is that its got a pretty stiff cable, so not the easiest to get it set to an angle you want, or to do any cable management with. overall: Good quality, good experience, would order again if I had more use cases for it.

I just bought a house with a pool this winter. When I was opening the pool up for the first time, the pool guy recommended I get an electrician to come out and set up some thing to coordinate a schedule, or I will have to either remember to come out twice a day to turn my pool pump on/off or have it running 24/7. Hiring an electrician to set up some new system = $$$ Buying this thingamajig = like $15 SUPER EASY to set up. I set up a schedule on my phone and forgot about it. It does everything it needs to do. The outlet its plugged into is outdoors, and its been going strong with no issues for months. With this heatwave, I want to be perfectly sure my pool is clean and ready for swimming, so I can set up temporary schedules or manually turn it on or off from my phone within seconds, from anywhere. And since I typically dont have my phone with me by the pool, the button allows you to manually control it as well. I dont use Alexa often because the voice-command system kind of creeps me out still (I only ever use it if Im cooking, my hands are dirty, and I need to know like a measurement conversion or something), BUT I tried it out once just to see if it would work and it did. All I can say about that. Im thinking of buying more for outdoor lights.

I first purchased the Meross Outdoor Plug for a hot water recirculating pump that I wanted to control using my phone. Hence, rather than having the pump running 24/7, I could simply turn the recirculating pump on whenever I needed hot water, with the touch of a button on my phone. At first, the Meross worked well, but then would start to intermittently lose the wifi signal, requiring a trip outdoors to where both my water heater and the recirculating pump were located so I could re-establish the wifi connection. This often occurred late at night, in the cold, and became so frequently frustrating, that I decided to try a different plug. Hence, my purchase of the Kasa Smart KP400 plug. It took a few tries to get the smart feature to register (an automatic shut-off after running for five minutes), but the connection to my wifi has been rock solid. I have not had to reset the link once since installation about a month ago. So far, so good. One caveat with the smart features that I had to figure out on my own--the app will show you when (date and time) it was installed, and it uses this information to coordinate with your instructions to the smart feature (e.g., turn on the device at such-and-such a time, on such-and-such days). BEFORE you program your smart features, refresh the date and time of installation, even if the date and time are correct! (There is a button in the app to refresh.) My smart features would not work correctly until I performed this one simple action. Had I known beforehand, it would have saved me hours of trying to figure out why those features did not work. This is the only reason for the four-star rating of the timer function. So far, Im happy with the product. Hope it stays that way!

A quick note for anyone installing this outside - Dont forget to use some Dielectric Grease on both the cord and the plug to help prevent water intrusion and corrosion of the metal. Pros - Super fast response time - Good wifi reception - Corded design doesnt block outlets and allows use in covered boxes - Status indicator light is useful for troubleshooting - Local Switch is really handy to have when testing or when internet is down - Low standby voltage Cons - 300 Watts is the max load and that is not very many incandescent lights (for example, 3 strings of bistro lights with 12 lights per string is around 400 Watts) - Requires the internet to function remotely. I have been waiting for Kasa to come out with some pluggable dimmers for a long time. I was super excited when I saw this product become available. I have at least 30 other Kasa products in my home that I have been happy with. I put this to use right away controlling 45ft of incandescent rope light I have installed around my front porch and it did a great job. The rope lights are 4 watts per foot for a total of about 180 watts (estimated). The dimmer had no problem with them. I would like to see a big brother to this with the ability to handle up to 1000 Watts of incandescent load so it could be used on my bistro lights. I would also like to see Kasa come out with some indoor pluggable dimmer modules.

I use them for string lights in the backyard and clear Christmas lights on bushes for accent. They’re excellent for this use. The only negative: Alexa can’t find any grouped items. If you group something and ask her to switch it, she complains that the item can’t be located. She can find every device, but no group names.

Im glad I trusted the ratings on this one! I really, really like this smart plug!!! Im not easily impressed, nor do I usually take the time to write one of these amazon reviews. So the fact that I am writing one now says something, in and of itself. Let me provide some specifics: this Kasa KP400 smart plug was easier to install than any others I have, including the actual Amazon ones. It has yet to disconnect itself from the network or fail to work correctly (again, better than Amazons own offerings). The timers and sun up/down programs have worked perfectly and it has not failed to follow a single, Alexa-given, command (once more, even better than the actual Amazon plugs)! I like that I can program it through its own (user-friendly) app or through the Alexa app. It has integrated perfectly into my lighting system (hello, Amazon. You taking notes?). I also like that it protrudes outward a bit, so as to not block the other, unused socket. I love that it is outdoor rated, handles a good load (without even remotely heating up), and has that green color that blends in. Additionally, I havent had to return it (after a short time) for issuing a weird error message that Amazon customer service translates to its dead and must be replaced. (Are you listening Amazon? You could learn a few things for your plugs from Kasa!) I not only recommend the Kasa KP400, without reservation, but will likely purchase another one myself (and maybe one for my aging parents). As for the few bad ratings, look: its always possible for one defective unit to get missed by the factorys quality control, or to have an issue with your wifi network. However, if you give Kasa/Amazon a chance to replace it, and if youve set up your coverage right (a lot of folks blame tech for their mistakes), I dont think you can go wrong with the KP400. If you think Im being overly generous and just dont believe me, try it yourself! The worst that can happen is you end up returning it and lose a day or so waiting on an alternative. But I am betting you be as please with it as I am am. So I say: good on ya Kasa! I will be trying some of your other offerings. Especially since the longevity, and functionality, of the Amazon smart plugs seems short-lived.

This is a much better choice than my old timer switches. I have had two of those. Both stopped working in about two years. The kasa can automatically adjust the dusk to dawn time according to your time zone or you can set a fixed schedule. The app is easy to use as well.

Works well. App is super easy. Love not having to go outside to turn on our patio lights, can do it from the comfort of our home when our dog wants to go outside at night.
